Help on a conventional reel!

3 posts in this topic

What is a good conventional reel that is star drag? I am new to surf fishing and I want a better reel, but I don't know a good strong reel that I can cast. I would like to stay in the $200 range. If anyone can help, that would be great.

Thanks

The reel most use and I highly recommended is the diawa sealine 30 shv, can hold almost 400 yards of line at 17# test, loudest clicker available and very reliable in the sand. Very good drag. Other options are diawa saltist, Abu Garcia 6500 or 7000, avet, or Penn 525. Abu's are great but don't fare so well in the sand, clicker is quiet and drag wears out quickly, Penn 525, doesn't hold enough line for me, clicker is quiet. Most reels mentioned can be had for 200 or less, diawa sealine runs around 120, Abu araound 160-200, Penn around 160 and avets around 200.
