Has anyone have any truth to someone catching an 80lb bluefin tuna, off the beach on assategue recently?

I have not heard anything about AI, but I read someone in Bay Head NJ caught a 70-80 lb bluefin from the surf.

I think this was early Dec.

Man... You only need one time: a lucky day, a rod on the sand and a line on the water!

"Google" up "Virginia Beach Bluefin Tuna" and see the big boys being caught within two miles of Virginia Beach. RIGHT NOW.

That sure would be an amazing experience. However, I do not think it was caught from the beach. If you look at the fish, it looks pretty dried out. Also, check out the sand from the fish to the surf... No foot prints? See the washout line from where the fish has been laying?

If it were actually caught from the beach, I'd be living there.

Not to mention, I think it is technically illegal to catch a Tuna from the beach, plus you must have your highly migratory fish permit etc etc.....

that tuna has been dead for several hours, its so dead there is NO color on him, no way he caught that on the beach, especially with the gear he is holding. now with that being said, the Black Adder is right, right now they are catching 100lb-300lb bluefin tuna off Va Beach, some as close as a mile. they have been around for the past two weeks, boats are hooking them while striper fishing and getting spooled......im hitting the beach tomorrow and im going to hook one :angel3:

nice report Steve...it amazes how close we really are to those areas...there are still stripers being caught in our area...tho they seem to be getting a tad shorter...I have managed a few stripers this month...largest around 35. So January, for me was way better then November...not one striper in November!...going to keep fishin considering the weather.

they have been catching tuna while striper fishing out to 3 miles for the past 3 or 4 weeks. i have seen 4 or 5 tuna personally and know of a douzen more. they are ranging from 100 - 350lbs. big ass bluefin. check out the link that steve posted, it talks about them:

Shorelines Blog :: Virginia Beach

people were getting spooled on small penn 330's and such, now everyone (that has the gear) are trolling for stripers with penn 50/80 wides in hopes of hooking up. its insane.
