I've heard them called rockfish in VA and OBX. Of course, there are at least two names for every fish the further south you go. :)

Striped Bass, Stripers, Rocks, etc.

Just like Bunker on the ocean is called Menhaden or Alewive or LY on the Chessie.

We call Bluefish Blues also, and depending on the size, other names for them.

(schoolie, chomper, etc.)

Hey Steve!

I'm not sure if the term "Bunker" refers to both Menhaden and Alewife?

I believe the Atlantic Menhaden is a very similar to the alewife, but a separate species. The alewife looks more like a herring and the lower jaw doesn't protrude as far as the adult Menhaden.

Juvenile Alewife:

Juvenile Menhaden:

More info on this Maryland DNR page.

Any thoughts?

Ok, not sure then....

I know in FL the proper name for Pilchards is Atlantic Bunker, which looks close to everything mentioned, LOL!

What the heck, oily and smelly, toss it in!
