Massachusetts officials have closed the Shannon Beach and Playground in Winchester indefinitely after 16 people, most of them children contracted a bacterial infection there.<o:p></o:p>

The infection called Shigellosis, is associated with consuming water or food contaminated with fecal matter. Symptoms include diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps and nausea and vomiting.<o:p></o:p>

The Department of Conservation and Recreation said today that those affected by the contamination live in several different communities and all reported visiting Shannon Beach within the last three weeks.<o:p></o:p>

The beach and playground will remain closed while officials sanitize the facility and conduct further tests to determine the possible source of the bacteria.<o:p></o:p>
