Finger mullet rigs, Bluefish Rigs. Usually you are gonna use a good piece of fishy bait, so a float to help keep it off the bottom will help. Steel leaders are a definite if you don't feel like constantly losing rigs. Back to bait...if the bluefish are there squid, finger mullet, any cut bait will work. If you feel like casting to the fish, then anything shiny will work. Avoid the soft baits the blues will just shred them.

I never used steel leaders on my summer bluefish rigs and i don't remember ever being bitten off. usually those small snapper blues mouths don't make it past the hook.

Now during the fall when the chompers are around..... well.......

The Fireball rigs use 80 lb mono, that will be ok for the Blues with the razors in their mouths.

Even when a smaller Blue gets the hook tied to a lighter leader, you need to be concerned about the other critters trying to take the bait and snagging the light leader.

If I'm using a single hook rig, I use 30 lb steel leader.
