I've searched and searched nobody can tell me positively what this fish is. I mean people have ideas but nobody can positively ID it , can you?

How deep was it caught, more than 100 fathoms?

I think I see large eyes, could be indicative of a deep dweller.

What was the geographic location?

Any other pics?

I was fishing off a charter boat in Belmar. We were fishing for black sea bass, typical party boat style. The firstmate referred to it as a reed/read/ something with an "R" eel. Sadly thats the best picture I could get , they wanted it thrown overboard asap, hope that helps.

Did it have scales? If it did,the common name for it may be a type of eel, but true eels don't have scales. It sorta looks like some type of conger.

There are many types of Conger Eels. Most are thinner.

This example appears to have the drop jaw and continous dorsal that an Eel would have. We can only roughly guess, he will have to give an ID based on what he remembers seeing in person.
