Don and I saw the forecast and decided to make a run to the third island to look for Black Drum on light tackle. We left Little Creek at 0630 in Don’s new 190 Montauk and arrived at the third to see schools of Drum near the spine. We casted for an hour and a half but they were not hungry so we anchored up for Sheepshead unfortunately they weren’t hungry either. So we pulled the anchor and went back on the hunt for Black Drum this time they were hungry and we hooked three and boated one, a nice 50” specimen.

Don doesn’t have any electronics yet so I don’t know what the water temp was but the fish are schooled up all around the third, be quiet and keep your movements subtle they’re easily spooked and just look for them. They showed a distinct preference for the jig over hard crab.
