After years of fishing and floundering (literally) with old factory rod and cheapo reels, I finally began investing in some better equipment, having much more of a respect, and now a passion, for the sport of surf fishing.

I am now looking to have my first custom rod built. I found a local guy who looks like he does good work.

I have the blank picked out and the fact I want a cork handle and grip for lightness. Is there anything I should be looking for specifically when getting this made? Certain guides to avoid? Suggestions? Things you might have avoided first time custom? Any help would be appreciated. I have about 1 week or so to order so I am ready for the spring!

Steve

Can't go wrong with Fuji everything, get the builder your reel spooled with the line you want to fish with. It's not totally necessary but it will help him out if he wants to spend the time, afterall it is custom for a reason.
