southwest Florida has been rated slightly better than average. This means that opportunities to catch redfish, snook, pompano, seatrout and more are good. Fly anglers using crab, shrimp and pinfish imitations are scoring on the most fish. Best colors are brown/olive, tan and light brown. Redfish are holding in pot hole in the grass flats until the tide rises. The young flood tide encourages tailing reds. Snook have moved into the creeks and protected basins deep in the back country or at the mouths of the rivers. Seatrout are plentiful almost everywhere. Pompano and Spanish mackerel are attacking bait near the passes during the rising tides. Some can be found on the deeper flats outside of Bull and Turtle bays. The waxing moon we have for the next week will increase the bite. Fishing should top off on Jan 10 for two days and then resume as we descend toward the new moon. Now is a good time to take advantage of the light fishing pressure and the great weather. Fish Hard, Capt. Pete www.floridaflyfishing.com
2. Boca Grande, fl. 17 March 2010 Fishing this week has been below average so far. I trust it will pick up now that the weather is warming. I did see several snook in the backcountry yesterday and had no trouble with seatrout. Redfish are rated good to excellent depending on the tide. High winds have made many waters cloudy. Only the backcountry waters are clear enough to sight fish. The clear water of the back country requires stealth and rather long casts when fishing for redfish. The reds seem a bit spooky, but good casts will take them easily. Curt Peterson and his nephew, Henry, caught a couple dozen seatrout near Cayo Pelau on Tuesday. Henry's biggest fish was 20 inches. This very polite 13 year old spent a couple of hours learning to fly fish before attacking the trout. I see a new expert in the making. Ron Whiteley and I fished Monday taking only a few seatrout. Ron's biggest was over 20 inches. While casting at some basking snook, Ron had a very large fish follow all the way to the boat before turning off. Wrong Fish or wrong fly? Who knows, but probably because the fish was in cold water and was lethargic. Water temps reached 67 degrees yesterday and will continue to rise slowly. I predict more activity in the coming days. I will be targeting snook and redfish for the next week or two before adding tarpon to the mix. Time to go fishing. Fish Hard, Capt. Pete Florida Flyfishing,Flyfishing School
3. Boca Grande, Fl. Report 1/31/10 Fishing was tougher this week. Anglers fishing with me did fairly well in spite of the adverse conditions. We caught mostly seatrout and a few redfish. Jim Leiner of New York caught several small redfish and about 40 seatrout on Wednesday. Eight of the trout were keeper size, so Jim was happy. He loves to eat a few now and then. Malcolm Lawson and his guest wade fished on Thursday taking one 26 inch redfish from Whiddens Creek and several seatrout to 18 inches from the Rabbit Key area. Jess Jones, of Carmel, Indianna, caught a fine redfish on fly from Whiddens Creek on Friday. He added a lot of small seatrout. We only caught two keeper trout out of 22 fish. Not good, but not too bad. The Sarasota Fly Tyers outing was held on Saturday with me leading several anglers to the backcountry to wade fish and have a shore lunch. We only caught seatrout, but several dozen nice fish. I cooked fresh seatrout for sandwiches, we drank a couple of cold beers and had a great time. I hope you can all come to enjoy the fine fishing we have this winter. I predict we will have good conditions beginning late this week. Tides look right for tailing redfish and seatrout will cintinue to improve. Anyone wanting to know more about what we use and where we go can simply email me or come to the Mangrove Coast Fly Fishers meeting on Feb. 23 at Twin lakes Park in Sarasota. I will lead three of the best guides in our area in a Q&A forum. Join us and ask all the questions about fishing you can think of. Fish Hard, Capt. Pete Florida Flyfishing,Flyfishing School
4. Boca Grande, Fl. 24 Jan. 2010 Rumors to the recent demise of fishing in Florida are highly over stated. How's that for stealing a phrase? But, it is the truth. This week my clients have caught over 200 fish of various species in the waters around Boca Grande and Pine Island Sound. Most abundant were seatrout. Daily catches averaged 45 fish per day. We also caught some fine redfish up to 9 lbs. Jess Jones, of Carmel, IN. hammered the fish on flies Saturday in Pine Island Sound near Black Island. David Chapman, of London, Ont. caught redfish all three days he fished including one 28 inch fish. He also took dozens of seatrout and a few ladyfish. We have seen small schools of baitfish reappearing on the flats and even a few snook roaming the mangrove edges. So, I predict excellent fishing next week. The full moon will bring strong tides that may produce good tailing redfish conditions. Seatrout will continue to improve and I see pompano and bluefish returning in decent numbers. Our excellent weather will make fishing enjoyable and you'll never have to shovel the sunshine. Fish Hard, Pete Florida Flyfishing,Flyfishing School

6. Boca Grande, Fl. 3 Sept.2009 Snook season is open now, but that doesn't mean much to me. I fish them all year and practise catch and release. The funny thing is the redfish are being super active, too. This week I found schools of redfish in Pine Island Sound and near Bull Bay, plus received several reports of catches in the Placida area. Recent trips have produced slot size seatrout and mangrove snapper from grass flats 3 to 6 feet deep where there is good tidal flow. The snook in the back country have been hanging on the points of the mangrove islands. The most productive of these are ones with holes and moving tide. The passes and beaches still hold numerous snook and some solid seatrout. Roger Maler fished Pine Island last week taking snook and seatrout from the flats south of Captiva Rocks. (See Pic). Bill Gunn, from Melbourne suffered through the "I'm not biting" tarpon before getting driven off the water by seasonal rains. He did manage a few seatrout and hooked and lost a very large redfish in Captiva. The strong tides we are experiencing will help move the fish a bit. Snook should be more abundant in the back country as the month progresses. Redfish will contiue to school prior to their spawning run. A word on school reds; keep your distance and don't throw in the middle of the school. Pole quietly or drift to the fish. Cast ahead of them and make them charge to fly. Be courteous, others may want to fish the school too. Fish Hard, Capt. Pete Greenan Florida Flyfishing,Flyfishing School
7. Boca Grande, Fl. 20 May 2009 It's tarpon season in Florida. We concentrate on the silver king throughout the summer. The fish are in good numbers this year and are appearing in numerous places. Pine Island Sound, Charlotte Harbour and the beaches off Little Gasparilla Island are holding fish. It is not unusual to see 500 or more fish per day. Our success has been limited. Windy conditions and clear water require long casts that are very accurate. Refusals are common. Sometimes even perfect casts are turned down. Changing patterns often helps. But, each day we have had fish either take the fly or show a lot of interest. Today is the third day of cloudy, rainy conditions due to a small tropical system centered over Florida. This will soon pass and the fishing should get better this weekend. Our alternative species is snook. There are a lot of snook along our beaches and in the passes. Steve Gibson's design of the DT Special seems to be the right fly. The best patterns for tarpon have been the Puglisi Peanut Butter, Bill Bishop's Mouse and Death by Rabbit ( a black/purple design). It is important to remember that tarpon will eat what is easy for them regardless of the pattern. So... presentation is more important than the exact design or color. If you intend to tarpon fish you should practice casting a 12 wt. rod. You'll need to throw 60 feet of line quickly and accuartely. Do not assume you can do it if you don't practise. Handling a 12 wt. is much different from a 10 wt. Afterall, you wouldn't want to spoil opportunities after coming to tarpon country because you were over confident. Besides, it will make your guide's life much better if you can cast well. If you are going to fish for tarpon in the next few weeks, contact me for the latest info. Fish Hard,
8. Boca Grande, Fl 15 April 2009 Conditions have improved dramatically in our area this week. Although a weak cold front came through yesterday the effect was mitigated by a warm sun and lighter winds. Snook fishing is very good now and tarpon fishing is beginning to improve. Consistent tides adn weather are making for good catches all over the area. Brian Karem of Buffalo fished the Nokomis area taking several seatrout and lady fish just north of the Albe Road bridge on the east side of the ICW. The trout were taken on a Clouser minnow. He also caught a nice snook and missed two large redfish just south of the Blackburn Point bridge on the west side. At that time he was using a grey/sand Puglisi pattern. Ron Whiteley and I fished Boca Grande on Monday taking a nice 27 inch snook and several seatrout and ladyfish on Ron's Estaz marabou and a Puglisi. All the fish came from the area just north of Bull Bay near the clam lease section. Dusty Sprague of North Port and I fished Tuesday just before the cold front arrived with excellent success. Again, we fished the area just north of Bull Bay along the mangroves using Puglisi patterns. We caught and released snook to 28 inches and redfish to 22 inches. (See attached). Fishing is rated excellent and will continue for the next week or so. As tarpon fishing improves, anglers will get more options for a variety of species in a single day. For any of my friends living in the Denver area I will be there from July 26 to August 4 at the FFF National Conclave. I will have time to fish, so if you want to get together just let me know. See you on the water. Capt. Pete Florida Flyfishing,Flyfishing School
9. Boca Grande, Fl. 6 April 2009 Tarpon are here. Not in great numbers, but they are showing all around Boca Grande and Pine Island Sound. Strong winds have made catching them tough. The best time is just at daylight before the wind comes up. When conditions improve the tarpon will be more cooperative. Snook fishing is very good right now. Just the same I managed a miserable day on Friday with my good friends Fen Sartorius and Harry Davis. A 25 knot wind did not help, but we should have caught snook and did not. On top of that we got caught in a 50 knot thunderstorm that soaked us all to the bone. So, beware of fishing with me. It can be dangerous. Mike Venuti fished with me on Monday in Bull and Turtle bays. Mike caught several seatrout, a few ladyfish and a couple of snook on Puglisi patterns on the west side of Turtle Bay near the oyster bars. It was Mike's first saltwater adventure. His excellent casting made the day. The Everglades Oddessy happened this week when Dusty Sprague, Ron Whiteley, Dick Trembly and I chased tarpon and snook out of Chokoloskee. Ron hooked up on a large tarpon near West Pass bay on Tuesday using his Greenan's Weeny tarpon fly. Dick Trembly hooked up on a very large snook in Alligator bay and I managed a couple of snook in Cannon bay. Overall, fishing was slow. The water turn muddy from the strong winds making sight fishing tough. Improving weather will make fishing easier, but expect the winds to continue for the next few days. By week's end tarpon fishing will improve and the snook should bite better. Fishing pressure has been effecting the region as more anglers are getting out. It is important to be courteous when there are a lot of people on the water. Fish Hard, Capt. Pete Greenan www.floridaflyfishing.com
10. Boca Grande, Florida 14 March 09 Transition is the right phrase. Beginning last Friday throughout this week the weather changed from winter to summer. Temperatures consistently in the eighty degree range brought us into the most productive season of the year. Snook began showing signs of feeding regularly, redfish are roaming the flats and mangroves, tarpon are rolling in Pine Island Sound and there are pompano, bluefish and seatrout everywhere. Fred Ward and his daughter Heather fished early last week taking just a few seatrout and ladyfish on a slow day. On Saturday, Ray Schwable from upstate New York caught several seatrout and a nice redfish on a Puglisi pattern in Whiddens Creek. See attached pic. Monday saw John Prince and family spin fishing in the back country. They had good success on flounder and seatrout fishing jigs near Turtle Bay. Brian Petrie caught seatrout, ladyfish and bluefish in Placida Harbor. On Wednesday and Thursday I had the great pleasure to instruct Terry Randall, a businessman from Maryland. Terry is a strong advocate of catch and release and is a member of the DNR advisory board for the state. It was interesting to discuss the conservation efforts in other places with a knowledgeable friend. Jesse Jones and Bill Ricardi of Longboat Key fished Friday catching a couple of nice pompano, lots of seatrout and ladyfish on fly in Gasparilla Sound. Most were taken on a Clouser minnow. This week will be the beginning of tarpon hunting for my clients. Those that can handle a 12 wt. rod and cast fairly well will have opportunities to catch their first tarpon of the year. Snook fishing will continue to improve as more and more fish migrate to the edges of the backcountry. Action will be rated "excellent" during the next week. Fish Hard, Capt. Pete
11. I wish we could catch these big ones more often. Pete
12. Boca Grande, Fl. 16 Jan., 2009 Cold weather decended upon us this week. That coupled with very low tides in the morning pushed the bite to late afternoon. Anglers faced windy conditions and slow fishing. We made the best of it by waiting until later in the day to try our flies in the back country. Redfish proved difficult because we were restricted in the areas we could fish, but we managed to take a few on Clouser minnows and grub tailed jigs. Seatrout and ladyfish were the most abundant. Cliff Fox, a winter visitor, took a large redfish in Whidden's Creek on Sunday. His partner, Allistar, from Glasgow, Scotland took seatrout and large ladyfish in Placida Harbour on chartreuse Clouser minnows. A sure surprise was a 27 inch King Mackerel caught in the middle of Gasparilla Sound. The king came after catching a medium sized Spanish Mackerel out of a school of busted bait. That is the first king I ever caught in the harbour. Rhet Roy, form the Tarpon Coast Fly Fishers in Hernando Beach caught seatrout and ladyfish in Bull and Turtle Bay on several different fly patterns. Charlie Koehler, of Indianapolis, caught redfish and seatrout on jigs in the back country holes behind Bull Bay on a cold afternoon. Tim Guilfoile, of the Nothern Kentucky Fly fishers club, caught seatrout to 25 inches on Clousers and ladyfish to 24 inches. All the fish came late in the afternoon. Next week is predicted to remain cool here and the fishing will not improve too much. Sunday looks like the best day. Afternoon fishing will be best. The tide will have risen and the sun should warm the water a little then. Fish Hard, Capt. Pete
13. Happy New Year, it's got to be better than the old one! Fishing this week has been a real pleasure. The fish were happy and the anglers were successful. What more can you ask for? Redfish have been the target species due to the super low tides we've been experiencing. Seatrout are beginning to get more active and there is a plethora of ladyfish and small jacks around. Most redfish came on the beginning of the incoming tide, but for a couple of days the fish were tailing as late as 4:00PM. Harry Davis and Fen Sartorious fished early last week taking redfish and seatrout on fly and jig. I've attached a picture of them with a double. Harry also took a very nice seatrout over 20 inches. The Cox family caught trout, ladyfish, seabass, flounder and more while fishing with me, Capt. Ed Hurst and Capt, Kelly Stillwell in Sarasota Bay. Big family, lots of fun. Ted Mariner and his day fished Boca Grande on Saturday taking seatrout and ladyfish, but hooking and losing a really nice redfish. Darren Wright, from Bampf, Alberta Canada, a fishing guide on the Babbine river and his lovely lady, Missy, fished Monday taking lots of ladyfish, a few seatrout and four nice redfish. Darren is an accomplished caster and his talent helped take two tailing reds in Whiddens Creek. ( see attached pic.) Drew Miller and his wife Laura spent a day in Boca Grande on Tuesday. Laura learned the ins and outs of saltwater fly casting taking her first saltwater fish ever. Drew, fishing the salt for the first time, was thrilled with the diversity of our fishery and caught dozens of ladyfish, hooked and lost (cut off) a big bluefish and a couple of seatrout. The weather is predicted to remain constant for the next week or so. That means little rain, continued warm, sunny days and good fishing. Now that the holidays are behind us there will be very few anglers on the water. If you like to fish where you see almost no one else, now is the time in Boca Grande. Fish Hard, Capt. Pete
14. Boca Grande, Fl. 25 Dec. 2008 Typical winter weather decended upon us yesterday making spirits bright. Typical for us is 80 degrees and sunny. The fish loved it too. Anglers fishing with me this week caught redfish, snook, seatrout, jacks and ladyfish. The best action came in the late morning each day. Fen Sartorious, from Santa Fe, took lots of large lady fish and a very nice redfish on a Clouser minnow in Placida Harbor on Monday. Harry Davis joined Fen on Tuesday adding a few more redfish to the mix and a fine seatrout about 20 inches long. Seatrout fishing proved to be slow for the two day period. I beleive the cooler water drove he seatrout to deeper water. The Cox family oddessy occured on Wednesday in Sarasota Bay when Capts. Ed & Kelly joined me to guide these crazy people to some fun fishing. The numbers were huge, but the species count is most interesting; trout, ladyfish, jacks, flounder, seabass, bluefish and a variety of small fish all made it to the boats. A fun day fro everyone. Next week will improve due to warmer temperatures and strong tides. Expect the return of seatrout, more pompano and aggressive redfish. False Albacore (little tunny) will be running in the near-shore gulf. Watch for the birds and you'll find the tunny. Fish Hard, Capt. Pete
