Alan Sherman August 7, 2011 Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report. I HAVE RECENTLY SOLD MY NEW 22' PATHFINDER XL TOURNAMENT EDITION BAY BOAT WILL BE COMPLETED BY THE END OF THE MONTH. I WILL CONTINUE TO USE MY CURRENT BOAT UNTIL THE NEW BOAT HAS BEEN COMPLETED. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A BAY BOAT YOU TOO WILL BE BE AS HAPPY AS I HAVE BEEN WITH MY LAST TWO PATHFINDERS AND NOW IS A GREAT TIME TO PURCHASE THIS BOAT OR TO POWER ANOTHER BOAT SINCE YAMAHA IS OFFERING A GREAT PROMOTION THAT RUNS THROUGH AUGUST 31ST. 2021. PURCHASE ONE OF THE SELECTED FOUR STROKE MODELS AND RECEIVE AN EXTRA THREE YEARS ADDED TO YOUR FACTORY TWO YEAR WARRANTY GIVING YOU FIVE FULL YEARS OF WARRANTY COVERAGE OR YOU CAN GET UP TO $1500 IN CREDIT TOWARDS THE PURCHASE OF GOODS/SERVICES.I Hot days, mild winds and fantastic fishing! That is what you are missing if you haven't been out on the water lately. South Florida is experiencing a summer pattern a bit different than we have seen in recent history. Tropical systems that started forming months ago usually form in August through October but this year they started forming in late May. Fortunately none of these systems have really affected us here except to bring us some much needed rain. Water temperatures have been steady at about 88 degrees a few degrees warmer than we normally see in late July and early August but the fish don't seem to mind. Put yourself in the right place at the right time and the fishing has been very good inshore, offshore and in the freshwater canal systems. Fishing in North Biscayne Bay continues to produce some very good fishing especially during early mornings. Small baitfish are schooled up in many areas of the Bay attracting the attention of sea trout that have reached 4 pounds, barracudas up to 10 pounds, jack crevalles, tarpon in the 10 to 40 pound range, bluerunners, mangrove snappers, bonnet head, bull and blacktip sharks, a few wayward pompano and bluefish and a few snook. I have been arming my clients with live pilchards and threadfin herring when available and we have fished these baits under a Cajun Thunder float and free lined. Pretty much all of the species that I have mentioned have gone out of their way to inhale these baits. On days when baitfishes have not been available we have cast Rapala X Raps, Twitchin Raps, Flat Raps and SubWalks plus Hookup lures tipped with Trigger X and Gulp soft plastics. Nighttime fishing I have been told has produced small tarpon, snook and snappers but I have not fished at night as of yet this summer. Offshore fishing has been mostly for dolphins. The past two summers dolphins were almost impossible to find but not this year. Why not who knows and who cares at this point because these fish have been in great numbers and in the larger sizes. The key to scoring with the dolphins is to have a good supply of live baits onboard because the dolphins have not been eager to eat trolled lures or baits. The next step is to be in the right depth. Recently that depth has been in the 800 to 1200 foot depths. Lots of weedlines, mostly broken lines, slicks and some floating debris have been found from 200 feet of water out to 1200 feet of water but the real action has taken place in that 800 to 1200 foot depths. Here packs of dolphins with many fish in the 10 to 40 pound range have been hopping from one patch of weeds to another as they feed on schools of small jacks, filefish, trigger fish and very small dolphins. Locating the weedlines that have bait underneath them has been key to finding the fish. Terns have also helped in fending the fish. Normally trolling along these patches has gotten the dolphins to attack the trollers but not so much this year and maybe that is because of the large amount of food under the grass weedlines. Tossing out a few handfuls of live pilchards or threadfin herring is what has gotten the dolphins feeding for us and many others. Legal size tripletail and some small wahoos have been holding under the larger weed patches and pieces of debris. A hookup lure tipped with a three inch Trigger X shrimp or Gulp shrimp has worked on the tripletail and a large lipped deep diving Rapala plug with a piece of wire has gotten the wahoos attention. Along the reef line kingfish and bonitos have kept the fishermen happy. Fishing in Flamingo continues to reward anglers with catches of snook, tarpon, redfish, sea trout, mangrove snappers, big sharks and tripletails. Last August my clients cleaned up on the tripletails with many of the fish being over eight pounds. Freshwater canals and the Conservation Areas in the Glade's are higher now that the rains have come but Flood Management continues to release water from these areas keeping the largemouth bass in areas that they can be reached. RECENT CATCHES: Michael and his grandsons fished a half day in Biscayne Bay with live threadfin herring fished under a Cajun Thunder float and hooked six tarpon and released eight sea trout to four pounds. Caught a total of 45 spiny crawfish with son Zach, his friend Chris, my wife Dana, and my niece Katherine and nephew Alexander during the two day Mini Season in Biscayne Bay. Tom A fished North Biscayne Bay during a half day and hooked eight tarpon on live baits fished under a Cajun Thunder float and free lined plus on Rapala X Raps and released one of these tarpon along with three sea trout to 18 inches. Fished with my wife and son offshore of Miami with live baits and landed 12 dolphins to 10 pounds plus two tripletails and a bunch of jacks. Charlie and Mark fished a Half day in North Biscayne Bay with live baits free lined and under a Cajun Thunder float and released a 10 pound bonnet head shark, two blacktip sharks and landed six mangrove snappers and seven sea trout to three pounds. Charlie and Mark fished offshore of Miami during a six hour day and landed 19 dolphins to 15 pounds. All of the fish were caught on live pilchards and threadfin herring although quite a few fish were hooked on Rapala Flat Raps and Skitter Walks. Sixteen of the dolphins were in the seven to 15 pound class. That catches us up for now! I do have scattered openings for the next three weeks so don't hesitate to give me a call so you too can have sore arms, big smiles and pictures of what you caught on the Get Em with Captain Alan Sherman! Give me a call at 786-436-2064 or e-mail me at shermana@bellsouth.net Let's go catch some Fish! Check out my new web site and to read about the weekly catches and to see your pictures. Key Largo Rods www.keylargorods.com) recently got in a new shipment of jigging rods. There model numbers are 843 and 844. These are 7 foot spinning rods with a lot of beef that will easily handle 12 to 30 and 15 to 40 pound braided line and a one to two ounce vertical jig. I have been using them for live bait fishing for snook, tarpon, sailfish, bonitos and dolphins and am very excited about the strength and feel of these new rods. I can't wait to give them a shot on snapper and grouper on the reefs! Check out the Key Largo Rods web site or give the shop a call and have a few made up. Want to stay cool and look like you belong on the water? Than gear up with some Columbia Sportswear! For starters slip on a pair of cool fitting and quick drying Aruba III Zip Off Pants. I have recently changed outboard engines on my 22' Pathfinder XL Tournament Edition Bay Boat. I had an opportunity to put one of the first Yamaha SHO 250 Four Stroke outboards on my boat and the difference has been just amazing. This engine has 25 more horsepower but carries 77 less pounds allowing me better hole shot while giving great cruising fuel efficiency. What more can a boater ask for? I have been wearing a lot of Columbia Sports Wear on my fishing charters and the new Blood & Guts shirts are amazing. I have had mackerel, cobia and snook just splatter me with blood and one good washing and the shirts are as good as new. Check out their web site at www.columbia.com. list for the Holidays and why should this year be any different? So here we go! I recently went to the web site of Key Largo Rods located in Islamorada (shouldn’t it be Islamorada Rods?) Key Largo Rods and glanced through the product list and found many of the fishing rods I use on my charters listed on the product page. You too can do as I did and find a top quality and affordable fishing rod to match any fishing you might want to do and order them direct from Key Largo Rods to have shipped before the Holidays or you can just charter me and fish with my Key Largo Rods. You probably noticed in the pictures I send out on my fishing updates that I use a lot of Daiwa spinning reels and there is a reason for that. Daiwa makes a great product and if you are willing to spend some hard earned bucks you too can own a high quality fishing reel for less than two hundred dollars that can last you a lifetime. I like the Daiwa Tierra and Advantage spinning reels and use then on all of my charters. Daiwa. You have probably noticed that in my writings I mention my new Yamaha SHO VMAX 250 Four Stroke Outboard engine a lot. The reason I do that is because this is by far the best outboard engine that I have ever owned. Yamaha Outboard Motors Home - Outboards, Boat Motors, Marine.. Beside the fact that it matches up perfectly with my 2008 Pathfinder 22’ XL Tournament Edition Pathfinder Bay Boat made by Maverick Boats, Pathfinder Boats., a boat that I chose not to upgrade because it looks and performs like new this outboard engine weighs in at 77 pounds lighter than my last F225 Sport Model outboard engine and is 25 horsepower stronger and gives me a cool 3.1 to 3.8 miles per gallon at 3500 RPMs and at 30 to 33 miles per hour with a full load on board which is my comfortable running speed while on charters and the outboard engines still gives me the peace of mind of being as reliable as any Yamaha outboard engine that I have ever owned. Call Bob Hewes Boats at 305-681-6602 and ask for Pedro Molina or Brian Wiborg or go to Bob Hewes Boats - Robalo,Mavrick,Pathfinder,SeaHunt, Consignment,Yamaha,Evinrude,Johnson,Honda,Suzuki,Sales, Used Boats for information on how you can obtain a Maverick Pathfinder boat or Yamaha outboard engine. I’m not fishing this Friday morning and had a few minutes to take a stroll along a sea wall in my neighborhood. The weather is perfect with calm winds and a flat Biscayne Bay. Looking out on the slick calm water of North Biscayne Bay I can’t help but get excited at what I am seeing. Schools and schools of mullet of all different sizes scattered out and along this one piece of water and I know because I have seen it firsthand this is what it looks like in many areas of North and, Offshore of Miami and in Flamingo. Some of the schools are obviously nervous and they have a right to be because lurking nearby are tarpon of all different sizes, barracudas, sharks, sea trout, jack crevalles and other predators and as I walk along the sea wall there I see a snook that is close to 10 pounds just cruising along the wall passing up one school of mullet after another. I follow him the whole length of the wall just to see what he eats but too my amazement he doesn’t eat anything. He either is full from a full morning of feeding or he is being selective in what he wants to eat. Biscayne Bay is loaded with baitfish, mullet of all sizes plus pilchards, Spanish sardines, threadfin herring and glass minnows, offshore there are schools of mullet, ballyhoo and flying fish and in Flamingo in Everglades National Park mullet, pilchards and pinfish schools are thick. The abundance of baitfish is attracting attention from a wide variety of larger fish and each area has similar and different species to be caught. The warm waters of South Florida is what attracts these baitfish to South Florida and then the predators follow the baitfish bringing them right to our door steps for us to enjoy the fishing action. North Biscayne Bay is producing catches of sea trout as always, tarpon during early mornings and then again in the late afternoons, jack crevalles, ladyfish, snappers, big bluerunners and cero and Spanish mackerel. South Biscayne Bay has similar species available plus big mutton snappers if you catch the tide and conditions right. Offshore action has been fantastic especially if you have lots of live baits and calm conditions so I can get out there. Big arctic or skipjack tuna, false albacore, kingfish to 25 pounds, wahoo to 100 pounds, sailfish, dolphins, sharks, barracudas, snapper, grouper and jacks. Flamingo has been producing a few snook, redfish, tarpon, sharks, jacks, ladyfish, tripletail, bluefish and Spanish mackerel plus snappers and groupers in the creeks and rivers. Recent Catches: Tonight I am fishing with Alexander and George in North Biscayne Bay. Hook up on two tarpon and release one on live threadfin herring and release a few small snappers and ladyfish. Fishing in North Biscayne Bay during a three boat charter fishing s a short three hours charter we released barracudas, sea trout and small jacks using live pilchards fished under a Cajun Thunder Float. Fishing a 15 boat charter in South Biscayne Bay, John and Kunan, Livan released over 20 cero and Spanish mackerel to six pounds plus two dozen bluernnuers and a dozen small jacks and ladyfish fishing live pilchards under a Cajun Thunder float. The tackle was a 7 foot Key Largo fishing rod and Daiwa Advantage 3000 to 4000 spinning reels loaded with FINS braided line. Fishing with Alex M from Minnesota in North Biscayne Bay we had shots at a bunch of tarpon but missed each fish and finished out the day catching sea trout and small jacks and ladyfish. Fishing with local Gene and his grand kids, Eric, Ryan and Mathew in North Biscayne Bay, Eric caught and released a nice tarpon that ate a live mullet that was attached to a 4/0 Ultra Point Mustad hook. Gene and Mathew each jumped tarpon and then we finished the day out with lots of small jacks, barracudas, ladyfish and a few sea trout caught on live pilchards suspended under a Cajun Thunder float. Next up were Jordan D and his wife Tammy fishing in North Biscayne Bay. We started out by catching all the pilchards and mullet we needed with my new Lee Fisher cast net and then we targeted tarpon and soon Jordan had a hot fish that ate a live mullet grey hounding along the water. After three nice jumps the fish threw the hook. Moment later Tammy gets hit but her fish jumps once and again throws the hook. Soon after the tarpon we were fishing for sea trout with live baits under a Cajun Thunder float and Hookup lures tipped with Gulp shrimp and in no time had caught and released over a dozen fish to 17 inches. Next spot the Spanish mackerel and bluefish are thick and Tammy has a fish on every cast. Jordan is casting a Rapala X Rap and is hooked up on every cast as well. Jordan lands a 1.5 pound mangrove snapper on the X Rap plus mackerel and runners. The couple released all the trout and most of the 20 plus mackerel and 15 bluerunners hooked. My son Zach is back in town for a few days and we hit the water at 2PM. We quickly catch all the bait we need in North Biscayne Bay and head for the mackerel spot. The fish are there and we catch a few cero and Spanish plus the bluerunners and snappers before heading offshore. It’s a bit choppy on the way out but once we hit the blue water edge it calms down a bit. Immediately the water along the edge becomes alive with activity. Gulls are everywhere and diving on small baitfish that are being forced to the surface by predators. At least ten frigate birds are working the area as well. We are off of Government Cut and the plan is to slow troll mullet down the bluewater edge towards Haulover Inlet in hopes of catching dolphins, wahoo, kingfish, tunas and whatever else might hit. Three hours later we have landed ten ski jack tunas (arctic bonitos) up to 15 pounds, release a nice sailfish, release a 40 pound shark and miss at least three large fish that either cut our line or slashed our mullet. Probably kingfish or wahoo! I took some pretty good video and if I can find a way to post it where it can be viewed I will! That’s it for now! Let’s get out there are see what we can catch. This is the time of the year that I wish I could fish all of my clients because there are so many fish available. Once temperatures fall a little more the Spanish mackerel, bluefish, large jacks and kingfish will be here and then it gets real fun. The rods we used were made by Key Largo Rods. The reels were all Daiwa Advantages. The line was made by a company called FINS. The bait was caught with a West Coast 3/8 inch 10 foot net and the boat was powered by a new Yamaha SHO 250 four stroke outboard engine. Check out my new web site and to read about the weekly catches and to see your pictures. www.getemsportfishing.com shermana@bellsouth.net Check out my report in the Miami Herald's Sports section under Fishing Updates each Thursday, the Florida Sportsman Magazines South Florida Internet Fishing Report (www.floridaspotsman.com), my monthly Action Spotter Fishing Report for the South Region in the Florida Sportsman Magazine each month. I have recently been wearing a lot of Columbia Sports Wear on my fishing charters and the new Blood & Guts shirts are amazing. I have had mackerel, cobia and snook just splatter me with blood and one good washing and the shirts are as good as new. his family fishing in Flamingo that he never let the weather stop him from having a great time with his family. Of course he meant within reason! On Monday when I awoke at 7 AM I checked the weather forecast for South Florida and saw that we might have quite a bit of rain and wind during the day. I awoke my wife and son and had them get ready for the ride to Flamingo anyway. We made sure that we had our Columbia Sportswear foul weather suites and off we went. We took our time getting to Flamingo knowing that the tide we wanted to fish would not be right till about noon. Sure enough we ran through scattered rain squalls and a steady wind at 15 to 20 miles per hour. We stopped at the Crackle Barrel in Florida City and enjoyed a relaxing breakfast before traveling the rest of the way to Flamingo. Once at the boat ramp we saw that there was only a few other fishermen in the Park probably because of the weather forecast. Since we were early as far as the tide was concerned we went searching for tripletail that I have been finding free floating on the surface but this day we saw none. A big squall threatened so we headed for the closest island and Power Poled down to wait out the squall. While waiting I was able to cast net a few dozen large pinfish a bait that I knew would be needed to entice the redfish that we were looking for. Once the rain slowed a bit we headed to our first spot. The tide was running out slowly exposing the shallow mud and grass flats around us. It didn’t take long before the pinfish that we had hooked to the ¼ ounce red Hookup lures started attracting fish. I got the first strike and it was a ten pound snook that quickly spit the bait. By the end of the day we had three redfish in the 6 to 7 pound range stored in the cooler and had releases one 19 inch fish and 10 others over the 27 inch maximum size limit. We released a lemon shark that was close to 150 pounds plus lost many others and missed a nice tarpon. We got to see numerous sharks cruising the flats with their fins totally exposed; a huge tarpon that swam by us with dorsal and tail fin showing that ignored our pinfish, a group of manatees and dozens of different birds. Had we canceled our trip none of this would have happened. And the best thing, our Columbia Sportswear foul weather gear kept us completely dry. With hurricanes, tropical storms, depressions and soon weak stalling cold fronts arriving almost weekly now, we in South Florida can expect similar conditions as I just described for the next few months. The point I was trying to make is don’t let some foul weather change your plans as to when and where you go fishing. Within Reason! Here in South Florida there is almost always somewhere to wet a line that not only gives you a great chance at a trophy fish but in safe waters. Offshore fishing has been excellent when weather conditions have allowed me to get offshore. Recently I had Tino and his friend Mark out for four hours and in that time we caught as much bait as we needed and then traded the bait into three large bonitos to 15 pounds, a 20 pound barracuda and a 50 pound sailfish and all caught on light inshore tackle. We missed at least a dozen kingfish and had either another sailfish or barracuda eat a bait and then jump as it broke our line. Biscayne Bay has been very good for sea trout, snappers, barracudas, jacks and bluerunners and at night there have been snook and tarpon available. Flamingo is the inshore hot spot. If you like big fish and want your arms to burn then Flamingo is where you want to be because the big lemon sharks are plentiful and in shallow water they are a blast. In between the sharks there have been plenty of big and small redfish as Pat found out last week when he caught over 20 redfish to 7 pounds, a 10 pound snook, sea trout, tripletail to 6.5 pounds, loads of jacks, ladyfish and snappers. Pat hooked a fish on a Rapala Twitchin Rap that almost stripped him before breaking his line. The tripletail were caught on Cajun Thunders and live shrimp and the redfish were caught on Hookup lures tipped with three inch Gulp shrimp and live pinfish. I have included a picture of my son Zach and a largemouth bass that he caught in a canal in Broward County that ate a live shiner and was over ten pounds. Well that catches us up for now! 6. By Captain Alan Sherman Seagrasses can be found all over the world in shallow bays, lagoons, estuaries and along coastal waters. Where there is water there are boaters navigating these waters successfully and often times not so successfully. In most areas the water is deep enough for their propellers to cut through the water without causing any damage to the bottom below them but the unsuccessful boaters that stray away from their appropriate depth of water can cause significant damage to the beds of seagrasses often unaware of how much damage they have created. As the propellers of these vessels make contact with the fragile seagrasses the propellers cut into the soft sand or mud bottoms creating a trench that is deeper than the waters adjacent to the freshly cut trench. Besides the propeller cutting the trench the propeller also cuts the fragile seagrasses leaving this deeper trench void of all seagrasses. The damage created is called a propeller scar or prop trail. A propeller scar may be just a few feet in length but can also be hundreds of yards or more in length. Almost immediately erosion of these propeller scars starts to take place making the trails wider and deeper and creating cloudy water from tidal flow and wave action. Seagrass meadows made up of one or many seagrasses such as turtle grass, shoal grass, manatee grass, star grass, widgeon grass, paddle grass and Johnson’s sea grass are very important to the shallow bays, lagoons and coastal waters all over the world because these seagrasses help provide protective nurseries and food sources for many marine species. These seagrasses also increase water qualities in the areas of the seagrass meadows and reduce wave energy along the coastlines. Columbia Sportswear, Bass Pro Shops and The Ocean Foundation have joined hands in an effort to restore seagrass meadows through education and habitat restoration. Recently I was invited take part in a two day event sponsored by Columbia Sportswear, The Ocean Foundation, Seagrass Recovery, Andy Newman, Bass Pro Shops and George Poveromo. The event was put together to bring awareness to how serious these propeller scars can be to our fragile bays, lagoons, shallow coastal waters and estuaries. During the event I had the opportunity to see firsthand propeller scars that had been accidently cut into fragile seagrass flats in Florida Bay off of Islamorada and then I got to take part in the actual repair of one of these propeller scars. With the guidance of the Seagrass Recovery project representatives, Kenny Wright and Beau Williams I was able to take part in repairing a propeller scar. Once at the sight of a propeller scar located just a few minutes from Wide World Sportsman in Islamorada it was quite obvious how bad a propeller scar actually is. I looked out on the beautiful green grass meadow only to see this horrific looking white stripe that had been cut into the meadow by a boater who thought there was more water under the propeller than there actually was. We anchored our boat and I donned a mask and snorkel and jumped into the crystal clear water that was just two feet deep. As I snorkeled the barren propeller scar it was obvious that the scar was deeper then the water surrounding it and that the seagrasses on the edge of that scar couldn’t grow into the trench. This scar was fairly new and had not grown much since the propeller scar had been created. Others joined me and then we started the repair of the propeller scar. First four foot biodegradable sediment tubes were place one at a time into the propeller scar. Once the propeller scar had been filled with these biodegradable sediment tubes long pieces of PVC tubing with wooden stands attached to the tops of the tube were driven into the ground and spaced out along the biodegradable sediment tubes. These biodegradable sediment tubes over the course of time will break down and completely fill the propeller scar bringing the depth of that scar back to its original level. The PVC tubes and stands are there to attract birds that will come and sit on the stands and eventually fertilize the area around the propeller scar with their guano. Three months after the biodegradable sediment tubes have been placed in the propeller scar, a crew from Seagrass Recovery will visit the site and plant seagrass plugs that were retrieved off the sea surface into the restored propeller scar. Twelve to eighteen months later the propeller scar will have been totally restored. 7. Walk outside breath in the air and tell me this isn’t the beginning of April instead of the beginning of May! I know that’s what I was thinking! The fish too! Turn your clock back a month and that’s the best way to explain why the fishing is the way it is today. The weather patterns that we have had this year have pushed back the calendar a whole month and the fish are responding as if it was the beginning of April not May. That’s OK because if you haven’t had a chance to get out on the water recently then you still have time to take advantage of mild conditions and the Spring Migration. Fishing has been very good to say the least with the one exception being in Flamingo. I say that about Flamingo with a hesitation in my voice because all we need for Flamingo to take off is a few days of calm conditions and winds from the east. Recent strong winds from the northeast and east have been good for the Miami areas but not so much for Flamingo where water conditions have been very rough and dirty. Fishing out of Miami has been very good even if the weather at times has not. I have had an opportunity to fish with my family quite a bit and also filled in the free days with charters to fill the week. Air temperatures have risen and during the past weeks we have had winds from the south to east at 10 to as much as 25 miles per hour so we have had to get creative in finding waters that will give us enough protection to fish and still be comfortable. Thankfully I have been fishing the areas that I fish enough to know where those spots are. Fishing in North Biscayne Bay has produced great catches of Sea Trout to over four pounds on live pilchards suspended from a Cajun Thunder floats, on Hookup lures tipped with a three or four inch Gulp shrimp and on Rapala Twitchin Raps, Clackin Raps and X Raps. Just about every grass flat we have fished has produced goods numbers of sea trout. Lots of Barracudas are available and at times have proven to be a nuisance when casting live pilchards at schools of Snook that I have found in Biscayne Bay on recent trips. Schools of bluefish and Spanish mackerel have eaten our live pilchards as fast as we could get a bait in the water. Large Jack Crevalles up to 20 pounds have been chasing baitfish schools near the Ocean inlets and out in the ocean. Mangrove Snappers are finding the warmer water conditions more to their liking and we are catching them throughout the Bay. Gag Groupers have been eating our live baits and then breaking us off in the rocks but we have managed to land a few and then released them unharmed like the Snook we have been catching but now we can keep the legalized Groupers. We have had a few days when weather conditions have allowed us to get offshore and the fishing has been outstanding. April is known for large spawning Kingfish, the biggest Dolphins of the year, Blackfin Tunas, Cobia, large Spanish Mackerel, Bluefish and big spawning Amberjacks on the wrecks and some of that fishing has been available this past week but much of it is still to come. On recent trips we have had nice Mutton snappers that ate live pilchards on the bottom, Gag groupers, big jack Crevalles, Amberjacks and Almoco Jacks over 30 pounds, chased schools of small Blackfin Tunas and then hooked and lost a few on Rapala X Raps, large Spanish Mackerel, huge Barracudas, Kingfish, giant Bluerunners but no dolphins. Fishing in Flamingo has been as good as the weather. Catch a good weather day, especially if the weather has been nice for a few days and the fishing has been very good for Sea Trout, redfish, a few snook, some Cobia and Tarpon and of course lots of Ladyfish, Jacks and Mangrove Snappers. Check out the pictures I have added to this report to see some of the recent catches. Give me a call and let’s get out on the water while the fish are here and eating. Then you can see your face with a big smile in my photo album as you hold your special catch. YOUR UP NEXT! Just give me call and let's see what we can catch! Miami Fishing Forecast: I expect the fishing to be pretty consistent for the next three or four months with lots of SEA TROUT, JACK CREVALLES, LADYFISH, SPANISH MACKEREL, BLUEFISH, GROUPER, BARRACUDAS, SNOOK, TARPON and some POMPANO in NORTH BISCAYNE BAY and OFFSHORE of MIAMI KINGFISH, MACKEREL, SAILFISH and DOLPHINS available on the calmer days and in SOUTH BISCAYNE BAY lots of action from a wide variety of fish like the SNAPPERS, GROUPERS, JACKS, BLUEFISH, MACKERELS, POMPANO, LADYFISH, PORGIES, GRUNTS, SNOOK and BLUERUNNERS keeping anglers busy catching and releasing fish most of the day. FLAMINGO in EVERGLADES NATIONAL PARK will have a huge amount of wildlife like the WHITE PELICANS, ROSEATTE SPOONBILLS, SKIMMER BIRDS,GULLS, OSPREYS, EAGLES, TERNS, EGRETS, HERONS, ALLIGATORS, CROCODILES, BOTTLE NOSED DOLPHINS, MANATTEES, SHARKS and TURTLES and of course the wide variety of fish that migrate into FLORIDA BAY and the GULF waters during the cooler months of the year. SNOOK, TARPON, REDFISH, SEA TROUT, SHEEPSHEAD, TRIIPLETAIL, BLACK DRUM, SNAPPER, GOLIATH AND GAG GROUPER, POMOPANO, COBIA, MACKEREL, BLUEFISH and I'm sure I am leaving a few other fish species out will be available to all anglers at one time or another through the Spring Fishing Season.
  9. Finally the cold weather seems to be behind us but of course this is April so now we have the wind. Better the wind then the cold weather that had fish freezing and with a bad case of Lock Jaw. The breezes of April and the warmer conditions have sparked the spring spawning season for many of South Florida’s fish species and the fishing has been very good. In North Biscayne Bay the sea trout are spawning and I have had recent catches that have included sea trout to 4.4 pounds, Spanish and cero mackerel and ladyfish, jacks and bluefish to four pounds with over 80 fish being caught during a full day charter. These fish have been eating live shrimp and pilchards fished under a Cajun Thunder float and ¼ ounce Hookup lures tipped with Gulp shrimp under a Cajun Thunder float or fished by itself along with the Rapala Twichin Raps and X Raps. The fishing rods have been 7’ foot Key Largo Rods in a medium to medium light tip along with a Daiwa Tierra or Advantage spinning reel loaded with six to 12 pound Mustad Ultra line. At the Ocean Inlets when the wind has been light tarpon have been very active and on recent charters we have had tarpon in the 70 to 80 pound class on live shrimp that ate a large live shrimp hooked to a Mustad Ultra Point Circle hook. Offshore fishing has been outstanding with large kingfish being caught along with blackfin tuna, sailfish and the first reel big dolphins. A few marlins have been sighted and a few hooked and landed. Flamingo is starting to make a comeback now that water temperatures are back to the low 80’s. Tarpon have moved into the channels of Florida Bay and along the shorelines from East Cape Canal north to Shark River and into Whitewater Bay as well. Snook are showing up but I have only encountered large fish recently. Lots of sea trout with some over 20 inches and mackerel, bluefish, jacks and ladyfish are still in good numbers. Now is the time to take advantage of the warmer conditions before the summer sets in and the wide variety of large fish that are available here in South Florida. Recent Catches: Richard, Brando and Justin fished a half day charter in North Biscayne Bay and had over 30 fish including sea trout and ladyfish. Andrew R caught and released an estimated 60 to 70 pound tarpon fishing in Government Cut. Jeff Myers and his kids Elliot and Marilyn teamed up to catch and release 23 sea trout, bluefish and snappers during a half day charter in North Biscayne Bay. Dr. K and Norman and Paul teamed up to catch bluefish, sea trout, ladyfish, jacks, catfish and Spanish mackerel fishing in Flamingo. Jerome and his grandkids Jake and Spencer fished North Biscayne Bay during a full day charter and caught over 80 sea trout to three pounds plus Spanish and Cero mackerel to five pounds. Jordan D. fished two half day charters in North Biscayne Bay. The morning charter was with his dad Norman and his sons Eric and Adam and they released 30 trout to 2.5 pounds plus a four pound bluefish and a mackerel and then in the afternoon Jordan fished with his wife Jennie and daughter Donnie and caught and released another 38 sea trout to 4.4 pounds. Fishing in Flamingo with Steve K during a full day charter the catch included a 10.5 pound snook plus sea trout, jacks, ladyfish and catfish. Fishing in Flamingo during a Busman’s Holiday I had the pleasure of fishing my son Zach and wife Dana during a day that was cut short due to a very bad rain storm. Fishing the outside of Shark River we had tarpon in the air and released lots of sea trout to three pounds plus jacks, ladyfish and lost a few mackerel. 10. Late March is upon us and weather conditions have finally started to return to a more normal pattern for South Florida. Air temperatures have raised as high as 80 degrees and water temperatures have come up to the high 60’s on a cool day and low 70’s on a warmer day. The inshore fishing in North and South Biscayne Bay is returning to what I would expect it should be like this time of year and offshore fishing has been red hot. Fishing in Flamingo is coming back slowly for the near shore species like the snook, redfish, tarpon and other fish that make Flamingo fishing so interesting and out along the boundaries markers of Florida Bay the Spanish mackerel, bluefish, jacks, ladyfish and a few cobias and tripletail are either starting to return to the Florida Bay or are in good numbers making me believe that we should see Spanish mackerel, pompano, bluefish and other migratory species passing the Miami area all the way into late June. Look for large jack crevalles, lots of large sea trout, ladyfish, bluefish, mackerel, barracudas, snook, tarpon, snappers and groupers to make a good showing in North and South Biscayne Bay And Flamingo and these fish will be eating anything that resembles a shrimp or small baitfish. My clients will be casting live pilchards, free lined, suspended from a Cajun Thunder float or on the bottom plus ¼ ounce Hookup lures tipped with live and dead baits plus Gulp three and four inch shrimp along with an assortment of Rapala plugs like the Twitchin Raps, X Raps, Skitter Walks and Clackin Raps. All of this fishing will be with light tackle reels like the Daiwa Tierra’s and Advantage spinning reels that I will have loaded with six to 20 pound lines. These reels will be attached to seven foot Key Largo graphite fishing rods in light to medium heavy classes. All of my hooks are made by O. Mustad & Son and some will be J hooks and others will be circle hooks. Offshore when the weather allows my clients will have shots at giant tarpon, large snook, big jack crevalles and possibly a permit along the beach and in the Inlets and then further off we will be looking for large king mackerel, bonitos, blackfin tuna, sailfish and dolphins. Recent catches: My son Zach who works for Great Lake Dock & Dredge has just returned from Ocean City after doing his two week on rotation and now will have his one week off before his rotation starts again. One day after being back we are on the water fishing off of Haulover Inlet. The recent West winds have made offshore fishing easy and we are in on a great kingfish bite. After fishing a few hours we have caught and released many kings to eight pounds plus released a countless number of 10 pound bonitos and a dolphin. All of these fish were taken on live pilchards hooked to a Mustad long shank hook. Back on the water today with George and his son Rivers and they are eager to catch some fish after thawing out from freezing temperatures from the northeast coast. The wind again is out of the west giving us an opportunity to fish offshore. After trying unsuccessfully to catch some pilchards in the Bay Lester of Lester’s Live bait offers us a few net full’s of pilchards and we are off to the offshore waters. Once outside the reef we put the baits out and are into kingfish. The bite lasts for a few hours and the guys have caught their fill of kingfish to 14 pounds plus a bunch of big bonitos and Rivers catches and releases his first dolphin. We lost one very large fish but we won’t say just how that happened. (Angler Error!) Now we start looking for some tarpon but at this time they are nowhere to be found. We move into the bay and start chumming with the pilchards and in no time we have large jacks crashing on the surface. We get two quick hookups but loose both to nearby structure and the fish disappear. Now we head for a grass flat nearby and spend the remaining time we have catching sea trout and bluefish. Today I am in Flamingo with the GM of O. Mustad & Sons USA. Ed, Ed’s dad Ed Sr. and Ed’s brother Kevin. The weather is nice and the game plan is to take advantage of what is biting best and that would be sea trout, jacks, ladyfish, mackerel and bluefish. We start out fishing a grass flat near Rocky Channel and the guys have Hookup lures tipped with four inch Gulp shrimp and Cajun Thunder floats with live shrimp hooked to a 1/0 Mustad long shank hook. The guys are not having much luck at first and ask me to toss out a line to see what if I might have more luck. Hookup lures tipped with a Gulp shrimp will catch fish no matter how you work the bait but if you get the retrieve downright you will always catch more fish and get more strikes. The guys have been retrieving their baits in a bunch of different ways but once I start hopping the bait off the bottom I get strike after strike after strike and am catching ladyfish, sea trout, jacks and bluefish. Now the guys know the bait works and that there is fish in the spot and they change their retrieves just enough and they are getting strike after strike just like me. In no time they have caught and released countless numbers of trout, jacks and ladyfish and we move on to see if we can find some mackerel. In the next spot after the chum had had a chance to work we are catching Spanish mackerel on almost every cast. The best rig is a Cajun Thunder with a shrimp. The guys have been catching mackerel, ladyfish, jacks and catfish for a couple of hours and had a shot at a nice cobia but the cobia moved on before taking one of our baits and we headed to our last spot in hopes of catching snook more redfish. This spot produced only catfish and we called it a day. After a day off I am back on the water with my wife Dana and son Zach. We are heading offshore of Haulover again but are having trouble catching live bait when Lester comes to our rescue again. He fills our live well with frisky pilchards and we head offshore to see what we can get. As we start dropping our baits into the water the kingfish are hitting so fast that we don’t have time to close the bails on our reels. By day’s end we have caught over a dozen kings to eight pounds, two bonitos, a nice blackfin tuna and a shark that went over 100 pounds. All on live pilchards and on light tackle. We watched a guy hook and loose a big dolphin just a few hundred yards from us before we headed in. Last up is Rick Berry of Key Largo Rods and his Buddy Al Taddia. We are in Flamingo again just looking for action and boy did we find it. After a breakfast at the Cracker Barrel and a late launch at 8 AM we head out to Snake Bight. After a short drift through the channel we release jack crevalles on every cast but nothing else and we are on the move. Our next spot is one that we fished a few days earlier and once again it produces jacks, ladyfish, sea trout and a bluefish and a missed mackerel but we move on. After anchoring and getting the chum out we are into a great Spanish mackerel bite. We catch our fill and move on. The rest of the day was more mackerel, many more jacks, ladyfish and bluefish and then we spot something black on the surface and check it out. The object turns out to be a dead cormorant. Under the cormorant is a half dozen tripletail. Casting Cajun Thunders with live shrimp we hook three and land three tripletails. All are undersized and release and we head back to the boat ramp after catching way over a hundred fish. YOUR UP NEXT! Just give me call and let’s see what we can catch! 11. South Florida recently experienced a major cold spell that adversely affected the snook, small tarpon and bonefish populations. Small jack crevalles, ladyfish, mangrove snapper, catfish and a number of other species that moved to deeper warmer water along with the snook and tarpon found themselves with nowhere to run when water temperatures continued to drop causing them to go into shock and eventually die. To make things worse fish that were only stunned by the cold were in many cases snagged, cast netted and dip netted illegally by people that have no concern for the welfare of our fisheries. Law enforcement agencies that are under staffed and underfunded were unable to respond to the large numbers of calls by people like me that are offended by the acts of some people. In the freshwater canals largemouth bass survived the cold but the peacock bass and many of the non native species did not. This is what has happened to our fisheries here in South Florida from Melbourne south and into the Florida Keys and up along the West Coast of Florida. South Florida fisheries have endured these conditions many times over the past 100 hundred years but have always found a way to replenish its self. We can only hope that this is the case this time as well. Because of the recent fish kills snook, tarpon and bonefish can only be targeted for catch and release and that is fine by me. These fish will need some time to recover but for now snook are protected till at least September. During my charters any snook, tarpon or bonefish that we encounter will be carefully released so as not to harm the fish in anyway. Fortunately these three fish make up only a small part of what I like to target during all of my charters. My guiding business is set up to target a wide variety of fish species that include many fish that were able to survive this past cold spell. Fish like the sea trout, snappers, groupers, jacks, ladyfish, mackerels, bluefish, pompano, permit, cobia, sharks, tripletail, barracudas, redfish, black drum, sheepshead, porgies and grunts are all fish that I will continue to target no matter where we are fishing. And almost all of these fish are inshore species. On days when the weather allows sailfish, king mackerel, dolphins, bonitos, blackfin tunas, a wide variety of jacks and snappers can be targeted from my sea worthy 2008 22’ Pathfinder Bay Boat powered by my Yamaha 2008 225 Sport Model Four Stroke outboard engine. I will continue to fish my charters with the same approach as I always have. Fish for the fish that is available each day I am on the water therefore giving my clients their best shot at having their fishing rods bent and their reels drags screaming throughout the day. Don’t let these recent setbacks deter you from having a fishing adventure of your lifetime! Recent Catches: A day after the cold fronts came in I fished with a local freshwater captain in the canals in South Miami. It was a scouting trip to see if any peacock bass had survived. What we found were many dead Midas Cichlids plus many that had survived. We saw a school of peacock bass that seemed fine and at least a dozen dead or dying peacocks on the bottom. We caught three peacock bass and saw dead iguanas on the bottom of the canal plus a few dead birds. The next day with cold temperatures still lingering I fished Ted and his client Steve in South Biscayne Bay. Water temperatures were in the low 60’s and the bay fishing was dead. The only fish we caught during that short half day charter came from a patch reef off of Cape Florida where water temperatures were 72 degrees. We caught red grouper, jacks, yellowtail and mutton snappers and grunts all small. My next charter again was in South Biscayne Bay. We started at 9 AM and fished a few deeper grass flats where we released a dozen sea trout to three pounds caught on Cajun Thunders and live shrimp and on Hookup lures tipped with a Gulp shrimp. The remainder of the day was spent fishing the Finger Channels and the guys had action from mutton snappers, red groupers, bluefish, sharks and a 2.5 pound flounder that had a follower that we did not catch. The best bait was a live pilchard hooked to a Mustad Ultra Point 1/0 short shank hook fished on the bottom. Last trip of the week was in Flamingo. Again we started late to give the water a chance to warm up. I had John, David and Frank onboard. It is to be a half day charter and we start in Snake Bight. There are dead and dying fish pretty much everywhere we go but most are snook, small tarpon and catfish. I had a report of good fishing in Snake Bight Channel from black drum, sheepshead and redfish but we have no bites so we move up coast to try our luck in East Cape Canal. The weather is dreary with overcast skies and wind. A giant crocodile gives everyone onboard a treat as it slides off the bank and into the water of East Cape Canal. Up in the East Cape area we get our first bites fishing live shrimp hooked to a ¼ ounce red Hookup lure fished close to the bottom. For the next hour or so the guys manage to catch three black drum and three redfish to six pounds before the rain from the approaching cold front sends us home. As water temperatures continue to climb I expect our fishing to get better and better with the exclusion of the snook. I just received a report that large tarpon are feeding during the late afternoon and into the evening off the beaches of Miami. 12. Fishing in South Florida continues to get better every day. If business would pick up with the level of the fishing then everyone would be a lot happier in the fishing industry. The good news is that the weather has been stable with no tropical systems to mention for the time being and things look good for that trend to continue. I have had the opportunity to fish some great clients this past week and also got to do some fishing of my own and with my wife Dana as you will see in the pictures I have added with this report. I was in Flamingo with my wife last week and then with clients Jeff and Scott a few days after and fished Florida Bay with my wife where we found plenty of big redfish on the flats that were eager to eat Hook Up lures tipped with a Gulp shrimp. Along with the redfish we also had plenty of trout, snappers, jack, ladyfish and tripletail. All of these fish were caught on Cajun Thunder floats with live baits suspended or on Rapala Twitchin Raps and X raps and of course mentioned earlier the Hook Up lures tipped with Gulp soft plastics. My trip with Jeff and Scott took place in Whitewater Bay where we fished the islands that are scattered throughout the backcountry. Jeff and Scott both threw artificial lures the entire day and were rewarded with snook to 38 inches, lots of mangrove snappers and jacks and some sea trout as well. We hooked a few fish that were huge but got away but that is what keeps fishing interesting and allows for great fishing stories. The one that got away! The top baits this day were Rapala Skitter Walks, X Raps, Twitchin Raps and a new plug the Skitter Pop SureSet. Offshore fishing has been better each day with the return of Mahi Mahi or better known here in South Florida the dolphin. Many of these fish were caught on a Hook Up lure tipped with a Deep Creek soft plastic. Along with the dolphins I had the pleasure of fishing the Florida Marlins ace pitcher Ricky Nolasco and his girl friend Amber for a half day out of Miami. Amber is from Los Angeles where she works for the Dodgers and loves fishing but Ricky had never been before and she was hoping that I could teach him a few things about fishing in hopes that he would get hooked. Ricky was able to keep his body clear of the hooks and stuck a few hooks in a few fish as well. His first bait in the water turned into a legal sized tasty mutton snapper. From there he caught bluerunners and then an Arctic bonito that brought smiles to both of their faces. Not to be out done Amber caught a few bluerunners and then added a nice king fish to the list before we headed inshore where Amber caught sea trout, mangrove snappers and a barracuda. All of the fish were caught on live pilchards fished on a Mustad long shank hook. The pilchards were caught using a ten foot West Coast 3/8 inch mesh net. The baitfishes were thick and two casts filled my Pathfinders live well. That catches us up for now! Don't wait too long to book a trip because the Fall Migration won't last forever!
  13. Fished in British Virgin Islands Past Week! Capt. Alan Sherman September 1, 2009 Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report I was out of town acting as a fishing consultant in the British Virgin Islands most of last week on a clients 65' Hatteras. We caught quite a few deep water bottom fish plus some nice yellowtails and mutton snappers. I had a great time and look forward to making another trip to this area in the future. Back in Miami now and look forward to fishing for snook now that the season has reopened. I have heard from others that the snook fishing is excellent in Flamingo and look forward to getting my regular clients on some quality fish real soon. Locally large schools of baitfish have been in North Biscayne Bay and I'm sure snook and tarpon plus some large jacks and sea trout are gorging themselves on this baitfish as we speak. Offshore kingfish to 20 pounds plus lots of bonitos and a few sailfish have been active during early morning trips. 7 to 11AM has been the best. Flat calm mornings have made finding baitfish easy and then off to the offshore grounds before the fish shut down for the day. Dolphin fishing remains spotty but reports are that some fish are heading our way so these fish should start to take up the slack for the hotter parts of the day. Mutton and yellowtail snappers have been feeding on the reefs. South Biscayne Bay has had some great permit fishing plus bonefish during early mornings and late afternoons. Large bull and lemon sharks have been cruising along the shallow flats and large yellowjacks have been following these sharks giving anglers opportunities of hooking a large jack on an artificial lure and on light tackle. Target Species: Snook, Tarpon, Redfish, Cobia, Kingfish, Dolphins, Permit, Sharks Miami Fishing Forecast: Cooler temperatures are not far away and the fall migration of baitfish and predators has already started north of us. Snook season is now open on both coasts and fishing should get better everyday right up to the end of December.
  14. This is the summer and as summers go business is normally off due to the high heat and families taking a well deserved vacation. This summer is no different than others so the fishing reports have been on the thin side. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p> <o:p></o:p> The best bet for me recently has been fishing in Flamingo in Everglades National Park. In my last report I stated that fishing in Flamingo was off and as of last week where I had opportunity to fish Flamingo three times I found the fishing to be just the opposite. <o:p></o:p> <o:p></o:p> On My first trip last week with Jack and his friend Lucy we fished around some of the Keys and missed a nice snook on a Hook Up lure tipped with a Gulp shrimp and released a few small trout before moving to an area that holds lots of bait this time of year. After a few quick casts we had all of the pinfish and ballyhoo that we needed and headed offshore where we anchored in a few interesting spots and caught a nice mangrove snapper and a lane snapper plus a bunch of jacks and a couple of bluefish and a bunch of sharks including an 80 pound nurse shark caught on 10 pound spin by Lucy before the action slowed down. On the way to the next spot we saw a few nice tripletail free floating but could not hook up. We headed to a small creek where we released two small snook and then a school of tarpon moved in and started feeding on a school of menhaden. As hard as we tried we could not catch one of those tarpon. We had a ten pound tripletail swim right to us but ignored every offering before it went on its way. On to the next spot but before we got to it we spotted a number of free floating tripletail and ended up catching two keeps out of five that we saw. Lucy caught a nice tripletail on a ¼ ounce Hook Up lure tipped with a Gulp shrimp and Jack caught one on a Cajun Thunder and a live pilchard. We saw a cruising cobia that followed our Hook Up lure but split the scene before we could throw a pinfish to it. At our last spot Jack released a 26 inch snook caught on a pinfish and then both Lucy and Jack caught 22 inch redfish on pinfish before we call it a day. <o:p></o:p> <?xml:namespace prefix = v ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml" /><v:shapetype id=_x0000_t75 stroked="f" filled="f" path="m@4@5l@4@11@9@11@9@5xe" o:preferrelative="t" o:spt="75" coordsize="21600,21600"><v:stroke joinstyle="miter"></v:stroke><v:formulas><v:f eqn="if lineDrawn pixelLineWidth 0"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum @0 1 0"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum 0 0 @1"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @2 1 2"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @3 21600 pixelWidth"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @3 21600 pixelHeight"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum @0 0 1"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @6 1 2"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @7 21600 pixelWidth"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum @8 21600 0"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @7 21600 pixelHeight"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum @10 21600 0"></v:f></v:formulas><v:path o:connecttype="rect" gradientshapeok="t" o:extrusionok="f"></v:path><o:lock aspectratio="t" v:ext="edit"></o:lock></v:shapetype><o:p></o:p> <o:p></o:p> Today I have Lucy and Jack again and the weather is horrible. A big storm is sitting over Florida Bay and ends up staying there all day. We ran out, caught bait and headed north to get away from the weather. At our first spot we released three small snook before Jack hooked up with a nice 25 inch snook and then Lucy hooked a good fish that turned into being a Goliath of about 10 pounds. A great fight on light tackle. Lucy hooked up again and this fish turned into a big sawfish that we were able to get to boat side but not o the surface. The fish was on 10 pound line and just would not let us see more than its tail and fins before breaking the line. The storm started to threaten us again so we headed further north and ended up in Whitewater Bay. Jack hooked a nice snook on a Cajun Thunder and a live finger mullet. That snook was 28 inches and 9 pounds. We released trout, jacks, snappers, ladyfish and had shots at six free swimming redfish before calling it a day. <o:p></o:p> <o:p></o:p> <o:p></o:p> Wednesday and Thursday I participated in the Lobster Mini Season and we ended up with a total of 55 tails for the two days.<o:p></o:p> <o:p></o:p> On Saturday I was back in Flamingo with Paul, Bob and Ethan. Our first spot was a hot with the guys catching six redfish to 27.5 inches and released over 10 snook all caught on Hook Up lures tipped with a Gulp shrimp and Rapala X Raps. We caught and released quite a few snappers plus ladyfish and jacks. At one time we had a school of over 200 redfish swimming all around us. Unfortunately after each angler had hooked up the fish spooked and left the scene. The rest of the day we were running from storms but did have many shots at tripletail that were free floating and managed to land a nice 10 pounder caught on a Cajun Thunder and a live pinfish. <o:p></o:p> <o:p></o:p> <o:p></o:p> Today I have Manuel, his son Manny and Manny's buddy Carlos and we are in Flamingo again. After heading out into Florida Bay we immediatley are faced with a huge rain squall that is slowly pushing to the north. We take a few minutes and catch a well full of pinfish, ballyhoo and a few pilchards before heading north. The storm is still in our way so we stop on a grass flat and cast some Hook Up lures tipped with a Gulp shrimp. In no time the guys are catching sea trout, snapper, gag, grouper, ladyfish and jacks literraly on every cast. After an hour or more of hot action the tide runs out and its time to move on. The storm is still around and in our way and again we decide to fish short of my origional destination. As we approach our new spot I see a tripletail and we catch a nice six pounder and then we see another four or five more before they dissapear. The area I had intended to fish was still in the rain squall that looked like it would stay in that area all day and did. We headed closer to the marina to see if we could find the snook and redfish that we had had action from a few days before. The action was slow for over an hour and we kept moving around and then just before laeving the area we tried one more spot and bang we were into the fish. For the next hour or so the guys had a big redfish, snook or jack on their line till it was time to go in. These fish were eating a dead ballyhoo or live pinfish attached to a Hook Up lure. <o:p></o:p> <o:p></o:p> <o:p></o:p> <o:p></o:p> Well that catches us up for now! <o:p></o:p> Give me a call and let's go fishing! 786-436-2064 <o:p></o:p> Check out my new web site and see your monthly catches and pictures. www.getemsportfishing.com <o:p></o:p> Check out my report in the Miami Herald's Sports section under Fishing Updates each Thursday, the Florida Sportsman Magazines South Florida Internet Fishing Report (www.floridaspotsman.com), my monthly Action Spotter Fishing Report for the South Region in the Florida Sportsman Magazine each month or tune into the Florida Sportsman Magazines Live Radio Show on 1080 WMCU on the AM dial or listen on the internet at www.1080wmcu.com every Saturday morning from 7 to 8 AM and here the up to the minute fishing forecasts from some of the top Capt.'s in South Florida like Capt. 15. April is quickly passing us by and the Spring fishing will be past soon as well! If you haven’t had a chance to experience some of the fine fishing that we have had recently don’t worry because there is still plenty of time before the heat of the summer is on us. Weather conditions change often in the month of April and this has happened at least once a week recently. With each temperature change and rain storm our fishing has changed as well. Fishing in North Biscayne Bay has been pretty good recently with enough variety to keep the anglers happy. Lots of sea trout have been available on many of the grass flats and as of now wwwfishreports.net our biggest has been a 4 pounder caught on a live Spanish sardine fished under a Cajun Thunder. Most of our catches have been made on Cajun Thunders and live shrimp or baitfish but Hook Up lures tipped with a Trigger X shrimp or Gulp soft plastics have worked as well. The Rapala Twichin Raps, Skitter Walks and X Raps are seeing plenty of action as well. Many limit catches have been made on many of our charters but most of the fish have been released to spawn and create new populations of sea trout. Large jack crevalles have been roaming the bay and on almost every charter we have hooked and released or just lost at least one large jack and many small ones. Spanish mackerel and small kingfish have been scattered throughout the bay and a few bluefish have made it to our baits as well. Snook have been available and some big ones have given us a thrill but not made it to the boat. I haven’t seen any tarpon recently but that doesn’t mean that the next cast won’t produce one. Lots of barracudas and a few snappers have also been caught on many of our trips in the bay. Offshore fishing has been good but everyday has been different with the many weather changes we are experiencing each week. Spanish mackerel, kingfish, bluefish, bonitos and dolphins plus some sailfish have thrilled my clients recently. Fishing in Flamingo has been good but not great due to high winds from the south to northeast. These winds have muddied up the water and then add the sudden drop in temperatures and the fish have been hard to find but feeding when you do find them. The good thing is that warmer conditions and recent rains will keep the fish moving out of the way back waters and put them into areas that produced great catches of snook, redfish, tarpon, sea trout and many other species. This area will be good for many months once we get out of April. Freshwater fishing has been outstanding with low low water conditions almost every freshwater canal or lake has had loads of bass and panfish competing for the same food. These conditions can mean hook ups or strikes on almost every cast. Recent Catches: Gene H and his daughter Ashley and boyfriend Rajeev teamed up to catch snook, trout, snapper, mackerel and bluefish while fishing Biscayne Bay for four hours. Mel T and wife Mickey scored on two out of three snook and jacks and then went offshore and released bonitos and kingfish and hooked up on a double header of sailfish but both fish were lost on the light tackle we were using. The Asher family caught loads of sea trout to three pounds plus barracudas, jacks and mackerel in Biscayne Bay . The Gomez family took home a bunch of sea trout and a mackerel caught in Biscayne Bay during a four hour charter. The family released a bunch of small kingfish, jacks and barracudas. Evan, Lilia, Vivian and 5 year old Ariel had there hands full catching lots of sea trout in Biscayne Bay . The Weinstein family caught loads of sea trout to four pounds plus mackerel, jacks and barracudas fishing Biscayne Bay for four hours. Ralph M., Terry L and I fished up in Ft.Pierce and caught and released snook, trout and jacks in the Indian River and then went offshore and had a field day on Spanish mackerel and bluefish. Eddie L fished Biscayne Bay and offshore and caught jacks, barracudas and snappers inshore and then offshore lots of Spanish mackerel and bonitos.
