  1. NEWARK Rickard Rakell Jersey , N.J. (AP) — New Jersey defenseman Mirco Mueller had full range of motion and was conscious after being taken off the ice on a stretcher following a nasty, head-first fall into the end boards during the Devils‘ game with Calgary on Wednesday night.Devils coach John Hynes said after the game Mueller sat up in the locker room and knew what was going on before going to a hospital for evaluation.“Thank God, he’s OK,” Hynes said after the Devils’ 2-1 loss. “He’s fully conscious and all of his extremities are moving fine.”Mueller went head-first into the boards at an awkward angle after going to the Flames‘ net on a rush. Calgary forward Michael Frolik then fell on top of him.Teammates immediately called for medical personnel to come out to the ice. Play was delayed about 10 minutes while the 23-year-old Swiss player was attended to by medical personnel and trainers from both teams.“You see guys get helped off the ice all the time, but never like that and that was new for me to see and I didn’t really like that,” Devils goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood said. “You try to refocus, but in the back of your mind you hope your teammate is OK.”Frolik said he feared the worst Womens Ryan Getzlaf Jersey , until he said Mueller give a thumbs up as he was wheeled off the ice.“When it happened I thought: ‘Of My God, this is going to be really bad,'” Frolik said. “I fell right on him and I saw his head go first. It’s tough, but when he put the finger up, it’s usually a good sign.”The fall happened near Flames goaltender David Rittich and it scared him.“I don’t even want to talk about it because when I saw his eyes, his mouth was open and blood went out,” he said. “It wasn’t a great feeling. Hopefully http://www.officialducks.com/authentic-adidas-ryan-kesler-jersey , he will be better and good in a short time. I don’t want to imagine any more.”Devils forward Blake Coleman said he never heard the Prudential Center so quiet.“You can even see it on their faces, for Calgary, that they really cared,” Coleman said. “No one wants to see a player go down like that. I’ve never been a part of a game when something like that happened.”Mueller has one goal and nine assists in 47 games this season. CHICAGO — As the Calgary Flames turn the page on the calendar to a new month, they hope the momentum from a successful surge through late November carries over.Entering Sunday’s game against the Chicago Blackhawks, the Flames have won two of their past three games and seven of their last 10. Calgary hopes to keep surging ahead against Chicago, which has struggled to settle into any kind of groove since early this season. The Flames head east after a 4-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Friday in which Calgary’s defense limited the Kings to 14 shots. The Calgary offense also came alive in a third period when the Flames scored three goals Ryan Miller Jersey , including the game-winner by Johnny Gaudreau, whose goal 7:41 into the third period snapped a 1-1 tie and allowed the Flames to keep moving in a positive direction.Article continues below ...“We’re a confident group,” Calgary center Sean Monahan told reporters after the victory, according to the team’s official website. “You come to the rink every day and you want to win. I think with the group we have in here, the guys that are in here coming to compete every day we have a good chance every night.”The Flames (15-9-2) had to demonstrate some patience in the victory, which was on display until they could find the back of the net more than they did during the first two periods of Friday’s game. But after producing the three late goals, the Flames proved that they can rely on their defense until their goal scorers can get going.“Through 40 (minutes) Womens Alex Goligoski Jersey , it didn’t seem like much was going on,” goalie Mike Smith told reporters after he made 13 saves. “It was a pretty boring game to be honest. But saying that, that can lead to some inconsistencies in your game and I thought our guys did a really good job of sticking with it. That’s a team … they’ve been like that for how long now? Just a team that waits for you to make a mistake and make you pay.”The Blackhawks (9-13-5) enter Sunday’s game riding a three-game losing streak after a 5-2 loss to the Nashville Predators on Saturday. Chicago has surrendered 19 goals in the three games and allowed three goals in less than five minutes of a disastrous first period. The frustration level has continued to mount throughout Jeremy Colliton’s short tenure as coach after he replaced Joel Quenneville. After a 6-5 loss to the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday, Colliton told reporters that the time for excuse-making is over.Saturday’s road loss only made matters worse as the Blackhawks prepare for the Flames, but Colliton said his team can’t blame anyone for its predicament outside of itself.“We’ve got to tell the truth to the team and then they need to respond,” Colliton told reporters after the loss to Winnipeg, according to the Chicago Tribune. Colliton has said the Blackhawks’ compete level needs to improve and that it needs to filter throughout a lineup that has its share of veteran leadership. But asked if the veterans need to keep the heads up of Chicago’s younger players through tough times Christian Dvorak Jersey , defenseman Duncan Keith — who was ejected from Saturday’s loss — bristled at the notion.“This is the NHL,” Keith told reporters Thursday, according to the Tribune. “It’s not really a developmental league. It’s about winning. It’s about results. That makes it more fun. Winning. Winning games.”

  4. NEW YORK – The Carolina Hurricanes are finally beginning to establish a home ice advantage. They’ll be the visiting team Saturday night Custom New York Rangers Jerseys , when the New York Islanders move one home game closer to recovering what used to be one of the most distinct home ice advantages in the NHL.The Islanders will play their penultimate Saturday night game of the season at Barclays Center when they host the Hurricanes in a matchup of surprising Metropolitan Division contenders. Both teams will be playing on short rest after earning wins Saturday night, when the visiting Islanders snapped a two-game losing streak with a 4-3 overtime win over the New Jersey Devils and the host Hurricanes capped a six-game home stand with 4-1 win over the Florida Panthers.Article continues below ...The Hurricanes (11-8-3) won the final three games of the home stand to remain in fourth place in the Metro, one point ahead of the Islanders. A home stand-high crowd of 13,226 turned out to see Carolina, which has the longest postseason drought (nine seasons) in the NHL and entered Friday next-to-last in the league with an average attendance of 12,631.“There was a lot of life in the building tonight,” Hurricanes goalie Curtis McElhinney told reporters after he earned the win by recording 34 saves against the Panthers. “That’s what happens when you start putting wins on the board and you have a little bit of success. People get excited about it.”Fans of the Islanders (11-8-2) are most excited about the team’s imminent return to Long Island’s Nassau Coliseum, where the franchise played until the end of the 2014-15 season. The Islanders, who rank last in the NHL in attendance with an average crowd of 10,648, will play the first of 21 games at Nassau Coliseum on Dec. 1. Just eight of New York’s final 29 home games are scheduled to be played at Barclays Center. The only Saturday night game in that stretch in Brooklyn is set for Feb. 16, when the Edmonton Oilers visit in the final scheduled game of the season at Barclays Center.Of course, nothing will excite Long Island-based fans more than a contender, and the Islanders are hoping Friday’s win – in which they overcame a game-tying goal by the Devils with 10.2 seconds left in regulation – brought a stop to a November slump. New York lost its previous two games by a combined score of 11-2 and is 3-4-1 in the last eight games.“Obviously, we’d like to get the two points and not give (the Devils) any, but I liked our response all night and I liked our effort and I liked our battle level www.officialsenators.com ,” Islanders head coach Barry Trotz told the team’s postgame show. “And that gives us a chance to win every night.”After number one goalies McElhinney and Thomas Greiss drew the starts Friday, backups Scott Darling and Robin Lehner are likely to start in net Saturday.Darling last started and played Nov. 17, when he took the loss after allowing four goals as the Hurricanes fell to the Columbus Blue Jackets, 4-1. Lehner took the loss Wednesday, when he gave up five goals as the Islanders were blanked by the New York Rangers, 5-0.Darling is 3-2-0 in five career appearances against the Islanders. Lehner is 0-4-0 in four games against the Hurricanes. Jason Botterill has experienced both sides of the spectrum in confronting the challenges of building a competitive NHL team versus trying to sustain one.In Buffalo, the Sabres’ second-year general manager is attempting to rebuild from scratch a team in the midst of a franchise-worst, seven-year playoff drought. In his previous job as assistant GM in Pittsburgh, the test was keeping together a Sidney Crosby-led core of a team that became the first in nearly 20 years to repeat as Stanley Cup champions in 2016-17.Botterill noted the common denominator for both comes down to scouting.“You’re always searching for talent,” Botterill said. “So it gets back to the importance of finding players that are going to join your system.”Teams at the bottom need to stockpile young talent, and hope it eventually jells. The Sabres, for example, enter this season with the top new player to watch in 18-year-old defenseman Rasmus Dahlin , the No. 1 pick in this year’s draft.Other rebuilding teams are counting on their youngsters to make immediate impacts. In Ottawa, the Senators are turning to rookie first-round pick Brady Tkachuk. In Vancouver, there’s center Elias Pettersson. The Carolina Hurricanes Ottawa Senators T-Shirts Authentic , meanwhile, are counting on forward Andrei Svechnikov, the No. 2 pick, to help a franchise snap a nine-season playoff drought — the NHL’s longest active streak. There’s pressure on the league’s elite, too.Winning teams lack the luxury of high draft picks, and are required to discover hidden gems in the draft and signing European and college free agents. As Penguins GM Jim Rutherford also noted, the NHL’s salary-cap system means successful teams have a more difficult time retaining their own talent.“You want to keep those players, but you can’t,” Rutherford said. “We went through it two years ago when we lost a bunch of real key players. There’s nothing to do about it. You can’t.”Valuable as they were, forward Chris Kunitz, goalie Marc Andre-Fleury, defensemen Eric Fehr and Ian Cole, and in this offseason’s case, forward Conor Sheary, were among the players the Penguins were unable to retain.Hall of Fame coach Scotty Bowman, who won nine Stanley Cup titles between three teams Ottawa Senators Hoodies Authentic , said the salary cap makes it more difficult to maintain a contender, though it’s not all that different since winning his first championship with the 1973 Montreal Canadiens.“The challenge is you have to have players coming in the front door,” Bowman said. “When I was in Montreal, they had a slogan that was in the dressing room. It said ‘And the kids go marching on.’ That was 50 years ago, but it’s so much more now.”A list of some of the top newcomers (and one familiar returnee) to look out for this season:RASMUS DAHLIN, Buffalo Sabres defensemanHe’s a smooth-skating, heads-up play-making Swedish-born blue-liner, who has shown a fearless ability of jumping into the rush. Dahlin will require time to adapt to the smaller NHL ice surface and has shown signs of being a little too cavalier with the puck in committing turnovers. He is improving as a defender, and expected to quarterback the top power-play unit. The Sabres intend to allow Dahlin to learn from his mistakes in giving him plenty of playing time this year.ELIAS PETTERSSON, Vancouver Canucks centerWith Vancouver’s 2018 first-round draft pick defenseman Quinn Hughes committed to playing this season at Michigan, there’s plenty of buzz over Pettersson, the No. 5 overall pick in 2017. He’s coming off a season in which he helped Vaxjo win the Swedish Elite League championship and earned regular-season and playoff MVP honors.RYAN DONATO, Boston Bruins forwardAfter spending three seasons playing at Harvard for his father, former NHL player Ted Donato, the 22-year-old got a head start on his NHL career by scoring five goals and nine points in 12 games for the Bruins last season.WARREN FOEGELE, Carolina Hurricanes left wingThough the jury remains out as to whether Svechnikov will spend the entire season in Carolina Ottawa Senators Hats Authentic , the Hurricanes are high on Foegele, their 2014 third-round pick.“He’s what we want in a Hurricane,” first-year coach Rod Brind’Amour told The Charlotte Observer this week. Foegele had two goals and an assist in his first two NHL games last season, and also finished second in AHL Charlotte with 28 goals as a rookie.BRADY TKACHUK, Ottawa Senators forwardSelected with the No. 4 pick in the draft, the son of former NHL star Keith Tkachuk is considered a key building block of a Senators team rebuilding from scratch. At 19, he overcame a slow start in his freshman year at Boston University to score eight goals and 31 points in 40 games. Ottawa’s youth movement also includes Colin White, a 2015 first-round pick, who had two goals and four assists in 21 NHL games last season.ILYA KOVALCHUK, Los Angeles Kings left wingHe’s back. After spending the past five seasons playing in the Kontinental Hockey League, the NHL’s 2001 No. 1 draft pick has returned to North America after signing a three-year contract with the Kings. At 35, Kovalchuk showed he’s not lost a step in splitting two Vegas defenseman and scoring his first preseason goal in a 7-2 loss last week. Kovalchuk has 417 goals and 816 points in 816 career games.
  5. ST. PAUL Adidas Peter Budaj Jersey , Minn. (AP) The Minnesota Wild skated to the NHL trade deadline in an enviable position, on track for the playoffs with their lineup almost intact again.Though the top two teams in the daunting Central Division bolstered their rosters on the last day for dealing of the season, the Wild weren’t worried. They’ve won four straight games to surge into fourth place in the Western Conference.”I like what we have and the way we’re playing,” coach Bruce Boudreau said on Monday, about two hours before the trade deadline. ”Obviously to get into the playoffs and to go anywhere, we have to play better.”That’s essentially what they’ve done, though, after stumbling through their first 20 games. They’re 26-12-4 since Nov. 9, and 10 of their next 11 games are against teams currently below the cut for the postseason.”We’re showing that we’re sticking to the game plan Adidas Matt Read Jersey ,” center Matt Cullen said. ”Early in the year, we may have changed things up a little bit if things weren’t going our way and find ourselves in trouble and dig a hole, but I think it’s been pretty good here lately.”Nashville acquired left wing Ryan Hartman from Chicago and re-signed center Mike Fisher for the stretch run. Winnipeg landed center Paul Stastny in a surprising swap with suddenly skidding St. Louis. The only move the Wild made on Monday was to trade defenseman Mike Reilly to Montreal for a fifth-round draft pick.”I don’t let it bother me,” Boudreau said. ”I’ve always believed if we do the right things, then usually good things happen. I’ve been on both sides.”They’re expecting defenseman Jonas Brodin back from a broken left hand this week, and their forward depth has been sound enough that they let right wing Chris Stewart go in a waiver claim by Calgary. That gives the Wild some more space under the salary cap for future maneuvering.”We pretty well knew he was going to get picked up,” Boudreau said. ”He’s too good a person, too good a teammate for nothing to happen to him.”The Wild, who host the Blues on Tuesday Adidas Matt Hendricks Jersey , have displayed an invaluable ability to rally lately. They turned a 2-0 deficit in the final minute of the second period against San Jose on Sunday into a 3-2 overtime victory . They trailed 2-0 at New Jersey on Thursday and charged back to win 4-2.”Lately, we’re getting that feeling that we’re never out of it,” goalie Devan Dubnyk said. ”That’s an important one to have.”Even more critical than this late-season resilience has been the productivity of these victories. Sometimes teams can get hot and still go nowhere in the standings, but the Wild have timed their streak well against slumps by some of their closest Western Conference competitors.”It’s a good sign for us, but it’s still going to be tight,” left wing Zach Parise said. ”We all know there’s not a lot of points separating the teams, so we’ve got to keep improving and worry about ourselves. You don’t want to find yourselves in a spot where you have to scoreboard watch.”— NEWARK, N.J. (AP) The New Jersey Devils are not sure whether top defenseman Sami Vatanen is going to be available for Game 5 of their first-round series with the Tampa Bay Lightning.Vatanen is listed as day to day with an upper-body injury after being hurt on a big hit by Nikita Kucherov in a 3-1 loss Wednesday night that put the Devils within a game of elimination. The 26-year-old Finn did not make the trip to Florida on Thursday, but he might join the team there.Devils coach John Hynes didn’t give out much information about the injury before the Devils left.”The focus right now is really on Game 5 and getting our team prepared to play and getting excited to play Adidas Eric Fehr Jersey , and going through the video and making sure we are a better team and ready to put one of our best performances on the ice in Game 5,” Hynes said at a news conference in New Jersey.Vatanen was hurt late in the first period of the Lightning’s win when he was checked in the shoulder and head area by Kucherov. He did not return. No penalty was called on the play and Hynes screamed at referees Tim Peel and Wes McCauley before play resumed. The NHL reviewed the hit Thursday and no supplemental action was taken against Kucherov, NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said in an email to an inquiry by The Associated Press.Tampa Bay leads the series 3-1 and can wrap up the series at home Saturday.”The good thing for me as a coach is that I have a lot of competitors in that room, guys with a lot of pride and guys who have had push back all year long,” Hynes said. ”Guys that have been counted out and all year long they have responded.”If Vatanen can’t play, the Devils can replace him with either Mirco Mueller or Steven Santini. Mueller played in the first two games of the series, while Santini started the season with the team but spent the second half in the AHLReplacing Vatanen will not be easy. He plays in all situations.”Sami’s a really important part of our team,” Hynes said. ”He’s a really good player for us, but if unfortunately he isn’t able to go Adidas Greg Pateryn Jersey , it’s next man up. We’ve said it all year long, it’s not about the guys out of your lineup, it’s about the performance of the guys in your lineup.”Vatanen has led the Devils in time on ice since being acquired from Anaheim in late November. He averaged 23:23 in the first three games of the series, but only played 6:46 on Wednesday night.
  6. TORONTO (AP) — Star center Auston Matthews will return to the Toronto Maple Leafs‘ lineup on Wednesday night against the visiting San Jose Sharks.Leafs coach Mike Babcock confirmed the move Wednesday morning. The 21-year-old Matthews hasn’t played since suffering a shoulder injury Oct. 27 against the Winnipeg Jets.“Matthews is cleared medically Authentic Pat Tillman Jersey , says he’s ready to go (and) feels comfortable to take a big hit, so he’s ready to play,” Babcock said.Matthews was hurt early in the second period of Toronto’s 3-2 victory over Winnipeg last month when Jets defenseman Jacob Trouba delivered a shoulder-to-shoulder check as the Leafs forward tried to cut in front of the net.The 2017-18 Calder Trophy winner as the NHL’s top rookie, Matthews had 10 goals and six assists through 11 games before the injury, which kept him out for 14 games. DULLES Pat Tillman Jersey Limited , Va. (AP) Barry Trotz thought of mentors and friends Jack Button, Tommy Ebright, David Poile and Wayne Fleming when he lifted the Stanley Cup over his head. The Washington coach didn’t think about his future, the same approach he has taken all season and playoffs.”I wasn’t getting consumed with what was said, what my future holds http://www.arizonacardinalsteamonline.com/pat-tillman-jersey , whatever,” Trotz said. ”I’m in a pretty good spot.”Trotz was in as good a spot as imaginable Friday as he and the Capitals landed back home in the Washington area with the Stanley Cup in tow. The celebration will last through the parade Tuesday, but once that’s done, the work begins for Brian MacLellan to try to re-sign Trotz, top defenseman John Carlson and other free agents. After not extending Trotz’s contract last summer Authentic Josh Rosen Jersey , ownership and general manager Brian MacLellan now hope to keep him around. MacLellan said after winning the Cup that Trotz will be back if he wants to be.Trotz and Carlson, who set a franchise record for playoff points by a defenseman, can be free agents July 1 along with unlikely postseason hero Devante Smith-Pelly, trade-deadline acquisition Michal Kempny and longtime glue guy Jay Beagle. (AP) After giving up a late tying goal, Keith Kinkaid was determined to still win the game.Brian Boyle scored in the fifth round of the shootout to lift the New Jersey Devils to a 3-2 victory over the Nashville Predators on Saturday night.Boyle beat Nashville goalie Juuse Saros with a quick wrist shot from the slot on the blocker side.”I was looking for a spot once I hit the blue line pretty much,” Boyle said. ”Once I found it, I wanted to be deceptive and try to keep the puck in the middle of my stance so I could go either way and try to use my reach to my advantage. I saw a little daylight on the blocker side and tried to make a quick move.”Kinkaid made 34 saves through overtime and denied four of Nashville’s five attempts in the shootout.New Jersey’s Taylor Hall and Nashville’s Kyle Turris each scored in the fourth round of the tiebreaker after none of the first six shooters could solve the opposing goalie.Sami Vatanen and Boyle had the goals in regulation for New Jersey, winners of two of three. The Devils moved past idle Columbus into the first wild card spot in the Eastern Conference.”I thought both teams played hard,” Devils coach John Hynes said. ”I thought their goaltender played really well, I thought our goaltender played really well. It was two teams that were going after the game. It was high-intensity, not a lot of time and space but I thought both teams really came to play.”Mattias Ekholm and Ryan Johansen had the goals for Nashville, which snapped its franchise-high 10-game winning streak. Saros finished with 25 saves.”We don’t ever talk about streaks really,” Nashville coach Peter Laviolette said. ”We have a huge game coming up (against) Winnipeg. When we do come back to work, we’re probably only going to talk about that and getting ready for Winnipeg. That’s a big game. We’ll look at it to stretch out the division, and they’re going to look at to close the gap. Both teams are going to fight pretty hard for it.”With the Predators trailing 2-1 late, Johansen tied it with 1:06 remaining in the third when he put home the rebound of Ryan Ellis‘ shot from the right side.”I get in the mindset where I’m not losing this game if they tie it late like that http://www.officialhockeyjetsshop.com/authentic-adidas-nikolaj-ehlers-jersey ,” Kinkaid said. ”I guess I can maybe do a better job of deflecting the puck, it was shot through a bunch of bodies. We got the win, that’s all that matters.”Ekholm scored the game’s first goal at 1:17 of the opening period.Carrying the puck on the right side, he cut to the left and beat Kinkaid with a wrist shot high to the short side. It was the Swedish defenseman’s 10th of the season, the first time he has reached double digits in his career.”If we play like we did in the second half of this game, I think there will be no issue with consistency,” Ekholm said. ”I think we could have been better in the first half. I thought we were a little soft and we didn’t play the way we can. But I really think we played up to our potential in the last half – it really showed what kind of team we are and what kind of damage we can do.”Vatanen tied it at 7:13 of the first with a slap shot from the right point through traffic that beat Saros on the stick side. 8. WASHINGTON (AP) It sure looked as if Alex Ovechkin was slowing down Adidas Jordan Schroeder Jersey , at least by his standards. This time a year ago, Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals were limping away from another early playoff exit. His 16 even-strength goals in the regular season tied for the lowest of his career. Injuries limited him to five goals in 13 playoff games. Then a funny thing happened. Coach Barry Trotz took time from visiting his son in Russia to meet with Ovechkin and talk about changing and evolving his game at age 32. Time doesn’t stop, not even for the greatest goal-scorer of his generation. Trotz and general manager Brian MacLellan wanted more goals, better foot speed and for their cornerstone player to take care of his body to be able to handle more time on the ice.”That’s just life: You have to change, you have to grow,” Trotz said. ”He was motivated to show everybody that he still is a great player in this league.”Ovechkin led the NHL with 49 goals in the regular season, 15 more in the playoffs as the Conn Smythe Trophy winner and showed in his 13th season he could lead his team to the Stanley Cup. Ordinarily a team would be running out the clock on the final three seasons of a 13-year deal with a player of his age, but now Ovechkin is a Stanley Cup champion and there is no telling how much more the big forward can do in his NHL career.”Was tough time Adidas Chris Kunitz Jersey , but we fight through it and we get result,” Ovechkin said. ”It’s just something special. I don’t know. I’m just very excited and I’m very happy right now.”Hours after the Russian superstar lifted the Cup on the ice in Las Vegas, President Donald Trump devoted his first tweet of the morning to Ovechkin and the Capitals.”Congratulations to the Washington Capitals on their GREAT play and winning the Stanley Cup Championship,” Trump tweeted . ”Alex Ovechkin, the team captain, was spectacular – a true Superstar! D.C. is popping, in many ways. What a time!”Ovechkin likely hadn’t gone to sleep when the tweet was delivered at 4:12 a.m. Las Vegas time and he retweeted it. Next week, Ovechkin will be the star in a parade down Constitution Avenue six months after Trump on inauguration day and this summer will take the Cup back home to Moscow. After that Adidas Brandon Manning Jersey , the next challenge starts. Ovechkin last summer adjusted his training methods in Russia, and he seemed rejuvenated when came back to the Washington area. Now he has to do it all over again with a happily shorter summer.”As you’re getting older, we’re going to have to train a little different so you become the athlete you always have been, because these young kids can absolutely fly,” Trotz said.Ovechkin looked like he was flying all season, from seven goals in his first two games to one on the power play Thursday night in the Cup clincher against the Vegas Golden Knights. But goal-scorers don’t typically keep up this pace – Ovechkin was already the oldest player to finish first in goals since Phil Esposito in 1974-75.”He was very comfortable and he was very confident,” longtime teammate Nicklas Backstrom said. ”He was really calm. Everything was really good. It’s impressive the way he scores goals and the way he worked out there. He was just a machine there in the playoffs.”Owner Ted Leonsis said recently his only regret about signing Ovechkin to a $124 million, 13-year deal is that it wasn’t longer. With three years left at a salary-cap hit over $9.5 million Adidas Cam Ward Jersey , Ovechkin has already exceeded the expectations of that monster contract with three Hart Trophies, seven Maurice ”Rocket” Richard Trophies and now the playoff success that had long eluded him.”We worked so hard through all the years and we were together,” Ovechkin said. ”It’s just like a dream.”—More Stanley Cup coverage: https://apnews.com/tag/StanleyCupFinals— SUNRISE, Fla. ANNAPOLIS, Md. The storm knocking out power and disrupting travel up and down the East Coast forced both teams to practice indoors Friday, where they were left to contemplate what sustained winds of 15-20 mph and gusts as high as 32 mph might have on their game.”I have no idea,” Maple Leafs center Tyler Bozak said. ”Hopefully we’re skating with the wind more than we are against it.”The wind is enough of a factor that the game could be postponed to Sunday. The glass had to be removed from the on-field rink because of safety concerns. The NHL has played 24 previous regular-season outdoor games and this one could easily see the worst conditions when it comes to wind. Temperatures just above freezing would not rank it among the coldest, but there are concerns how the wind could make a real difference.”I haven’t played in anywhere it’s been super windy,” said Maple Leafs winger James van Riemsdyk, who will be taking part in his fifth outdoor game. ”It’ll definitely make a unique dynamic, I know. It seems like in today’s game there’s lots of high flips and stuff like that, so it’ll be interesting to see how the puck reacts getting flipped in the air and a gust of wind comes up.”Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby thinks strong wind would only possibly affect dump-ins or high flips of the puck and that it could make it difficult for players to keep their eyes open when it’s head on. Maple Leafs goaltender Frederik Andersen is more concerned for the skaters – and that’s a shared concern.”If you have a turnover and you’ve got to backcheck, that’s probably when it’s going to be a little tough,” Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom said.NHL players are more accustomed to climate-controlled arenas – a long way from their younger days when playing on frozen ponds or lakes meant dealing with the conditions.”It won’t feel good on your body, that’s for sure Adidas Michael Grabner Jersey ,” Toronto forward Mitch Marner said. ”It probably won’t help with the puck or anything like that.”Capitals coach Barry Trotz was more worried when the wind rumbled around trees outside his house Thursday night and joked about a coin toss to pick directions like a football game.Previous outdoor games have included teams changing ends at the 10-minute mark of the third period to negate an unfair wind advantage. At the least, that’s likely, and players are prepared for the wind even though they don’t know exactly what it’ll do.”The wind wouldn’t be ideal, but part of playing these games is you have to deal with the weather,” Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly said. ”She was a little windy out there (Friday), but hopefully she clears up a little bit for us.”Rielly, who played outdoors on New Year’s Day in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 2014 and again in Toronto in 2017, figures wind would be more difficult to deal with than snow. But the 23-year-old has a sunny disposition about wacky weather.”It definitely has an impact on the game,” Rielly said. ”But that’s all part of the experience. Players, two teams have to deal with it. It’s not going to change the game plan or anything. It’s just going to make it a little bit more difficult and it might be kind of fun.”—

He has only 10 homers and 35 RBI, and his 26 steals are two off his career high of 28. There's no frowning at his .311/.403/.432 triple-slash line, though. Nor at his 6.1 wins above replacement, according to Baseball Reference. Those lead all National League position players:1.Lorenzo Cain: 6.12.Paul Goldschmidt: 5.6T3.Christian Yelich: 5.4T3.Javier Baez: 5.4T3:Freddie Freeman: 5.4Thanks in part to their 32-year-old center fielder's efforts, the Brewers hold the NL's top wild-card spot. They're also only one game off the Chicago Cubs' pace in the NL Central race. This doesn't mean Cain has the inside track at the NL MVP award. If there's a takeaway from an August 30 MLB Network discussion on the topic, it's that he's worthy of acknowledgment in the crowded race for the award but difficult to elevate in it:MLB Network MLBNetworkWhere do you think ChristianYelich should rank as an NL MVP candidate? How about his Brewers teammate Lorenzo Cain? #MLBNow 8Ifoa03f9iHowever Chris Rusin Jersey , former Colorado Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd hit the proverbial nail on the head: That Cain is in the MVP discussion at all reflects how much baseball has changed in recent years.A few exceptions aside, the MVP has typically honored guys with the biggest sticks. But as WAR has become a bigger part of the conversation, appreciation has grown for players who can do it all.Hence Cain's impossible-to-ignore candidacy. He's one of the National League's most valuable baserunners and defenders. And despite his 10 dingers and 35 RBI, he qualifies as a well-above-average hitter by way of his 122 OPS+.Whether going over all of this is still necessary in the year 2018 is a good question. The battle for the future of baseball was won by the number-crunchers many years ago, and there are many W-based statistics with which their victory is honored. Every time somebody mentions WAR, wOBA, wRC+ or WPA, a sabermetrician gets his/her wings.Still, the special place that Cain has found himself in feels like a singular achievement.Consider Cain's contract. He's one of only 32 free-agent hitters who've signed a contract worth at least $80 million, and he got his despite being relatively old, inexperienced, unproductive and undecorated.Cain didn't become an everyday player with the Kansas City Royals鈥攚ho acquired him from the Brewers as part of the 2010 Zack Greinke trade鈥攗ntil his age-28 season in 2014. By the time he entered free agency, he was 31 and his record included just 756 career games http://www.rockiesfanproshop.com/authentic-wade-davis-jersey , a 106 OPS+ and 57 homers.Among other $80 million free-agent hitters, those figures rank 29th, tied for 29th and 32nd. To boot, Cain had made only one All-Star team, and his defensive reputation wasn't underscored by any Gold Glove awards. To these extents, he entered the open market as less of a Torii Hunter and more of a Gary Matthews Jr.But Cain had racked up more WAR from 2014 to 2017 than every outfielder except Mike Trout, Mookie Betts, Kevin Kiermaier and Giancarlo Stanton. Despite his age, that enabled strong projections for his contract. For example, MLB Trade Rumors and FanGraphs predicted something in the four-year, $70 million range. That the Brewers were willing to beat those projections with their five-year, $80 million offer speaks to how optimistic they were about Cain."As we examined Lorenzo's career arc this offseason, we thought that he was still improving as a player Jon Gray Jersey ," GM David Stearns told Ben Lindbergh of The Ringer. "It's odd to say that about someone on this side of 30, but we thought that was the case."The readings on Cain's athleticism must have helped Milwaukee reach that conclusion. His average sprint speed was holding steady. While metrics like defensive runs saved and ultimate zone rating cast some doubt on his defense, Statcast was over the moon with it. He had recorded 18 outs above average in 2017, more than even Betts could muster. As for Cain's bat, what it lacked in power, it made up for in gradual advancement. He had established himself as an above-average contact hitter, and his walk rate was on the way up.Even if the latter trend abated, the former promised to bring a welcome dynamic to a Brewers offense that undercut 224 home runs (tied for tops in the NL) with MLB's highest strikeout rate in 2017. Sure enough, Cain has kept hitting for contact and helped the Brewers lower their K% from 25.6 to 23.7.But the real revelation has been his increased patience. He's working on a career-best 11.9 BB%, and it's rooted in a dramatic plate-discipline improvement. According to the most advanced strike zone available at Baseball Savant, his out-of-zone swing rate has cratered:Some of this is circumstantial. After bouncing all around Kansas City's lineups, Cain now mostly bats out of the leadoff spot in Milwaukee. There's a greater emphasis on putting up quality at-bats.But it's no small feat that he's played his part as well as he has. Likewise, it's been no small boon to the Brewers.Their on-base percentage in the leadoff spot has increased from .320 to .357. Meanwhile Adam Ottavino Jersey , Cain's elite .471 OBP with runners in scoring position has helped them raise their collective OBP in those spots from .326 to .336. Thus, they're keeping the line moving a lot better than they did a year ago.The Brewers have also benefited from Cain's baserunning and defense. His aggression has helped raise their rate of extra bases taken on hits from 35 percent to 40 percent. They've also gone from the middle of the pack in defensive efficiency to fourth-best.Maybe Cain won't be named the NL MVP in November, but his 2018 season is about as complete a success story as he or the Brewers could have hoped for. He's a late bloomer who's still blooming, and they're all the better for it.In a bygone era, it might have been hard to notice as much. But in this era, there's no excuse not to. 12. Stacy Revere/Getty ImagesIf you weren't following baseball Twitter every hour on Monday Jonathan Lucroy Jersey , the chances are you missed some notable news and rumors.A host of transactions went down. Cincinnati Reds slugger Adam Duvall is now an Atlanta Brave. Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim second baseman Ian Kinsler joined the Boston Red Sox, per Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports and The Athletic. Toronto Blue Jays closer Roberto Osuna was traded to the Houston Astros, and Minnesota Twins starter Lance Lynn headed east to join the New York Yankees. All of that news doesn't include the trade rumors that flew in on Monday. Here's a look at the latest surrounding some big names.Bryce HarperPer Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post, the Washington Nationals haven't closed the door on trading superstar right fielder Bryce Harper prior to the non-waiver trade deadline of Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET:Chelsea Janes chelsea_janesSo I now get the sense from people around the team that as of mid-afternoon, Nationals had not ruled out trading Harper. Unclear if that means they鈥檙e just doing due diligence on offers or soliciting them. Makes they would do the former, at least to some extent. bYIuPG86LVChelsea Janes chelsea_janesThe gap between picking up the phone just in case and actively negotiating is wide, and I don鈥檛 have any confirmation they鈥檝e bridged that. But it still seems (at least for now) that everything is on the table, which is informative in itself. YNDhdcdIR9Marc Feinsand of MLB.com reported that Harper was "available":Mark Feinsand FeinsandAccording to a source, the Nationals are making it known to other teams that Bryce Harper is indeed available.Rosenthal also noted similar sentiments to Janes and Feinsand, and quoted an executive's take on the matter:Ken Rosenthal Ken_RosenthalSources confirm: #Nationals sending 鈥渇eelers鈥?out on Bryce Harper. 鈥淚鈥檇 be shocked if they do it,鈥?one rival exec says. 鈥淭hey鈥檙e seeing if someone wants to go crazy.鈥?First with the news that Harper was available: chelsea_janes and Feinsand. Finally,Jon Morosi of Fox Sports and the MLB Network named one team in talks regarding a Harper deal:"The [Cleveland] Indians and Nationals have communicated recently regarding a possibleBryce Harpertrade, sources told MLB.com on Monday, but the discussions have yet to gather momentum."Harper is set to become a free agent after the year is over, and it's possible the Nats look to move the six-time All-Star so they don't risk losing him for nothing in the offseason.Furthermore, the Nats are 52-52 and in third place in the National League East. While Harper makes the team better, it's possible that Washington, which has lost in the National League Division Series four times this decade Carlos Gonzalez Jersey , could move the superstar in exchange for a package it can't refuse.Or the Nats can simply buckle down, push for the playoffs and hope to re-sign Harper in the offseason.Regardless, Washington needs to make a decision quickly. Andrew McCutchenAndrew McCutchen's stay in San Francisco may not last long, as it looks like numerous teams are interested in the 2013 National League MVP.Per Jon Morosi, three teams could be in the mix:Jon Morosi jonmorosiSources: #Yankees, #Phillies, #Indians have shown interest in Andrew McCutchen, as #SFGiants consider deals involving their pending free agents. MLB MLBNetworkMcCutchen spent the first nine years of his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates before being traded to the Giants in January this year. He's had a decent year at the dish, hitting 10 home runs alongside 43 RBI and a .760 OPS.He hasn't fared particularly well in the field during his career (-6.1 defensive WAR, per Baseball Reference), but teams would largely be getting him for his bat and remarkable durability (since his first full season in 2010, McCutchen has never missed more than 16 games).San Francisco is below .500 and looking up at three teams in the NL West, so it might look to trade away some veterans for prospects that could help re-stock a farm system that Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report ranked just 26th in June.On the opposite side of a deal, the Cleveland Indians make the most sense out of the teams mentioned. The Tribe have a big need for an outfielder given the litany of injuries Cleveland outfielders have suffered during this season, so McCutchen could lock down a spot as the team enters the stretch run.Chris ArcherThe No. 1 starting pitcher left on the trading block is the Tampa Bay Rays' Chris Archer. While a host of teams are after him, it's unclear as to whether Tampa will deal him at this time.Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Timeshas the latest:"Chris Archer has been and will be the main topic of conversation, with the Rays sorting through interest from around a dozen teams and now asking for final offers, which they could spend all night reviewing."The Braves http://www.rockiesfanproshop.com/authentic-dj-lemahieu-jersey , Cardinals, Dodgers, Padres and Yankees are considered the most interested teams and would seem to have the young talent to match up. Other teams that have been mentioned include the A's, Astros, Brewers, Phillies and Pirates."The 29-year-old Archer has a career 3.45 xFIP and 25.7 percent strikeout rate, per FanGraphs, so it's easy to see why he's so coveted. At his best, Archer can be a staff ace that anchors a rotation.Given how many teams could be involved, this looks like a situation where the Rays could say deal or no deal in the final hour. It's also possible a team presses the panic button and gives Tampa Bay an offer it can't refuse. Some playoff contenders have had starting-pitching struggles this year, such as the New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs. The market to deal Archer is clearly there, but given his skill set plus the fact that he is under team control through 2021, it would likely take a sizable haul to land him. ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — For Blake Snell, all the setbacks set up all these victories.Snell became the major leagues’ first 20-game winner in two years, helping pitch the Tampa Bay Rays past the Texas Rangers 4-0 Tuesday night.Snell (20-5) threw one-hit ball for five innings and tied the Tampa Bay record for victories in a season. David Price also won 20 in his Cy Young Award season of 2012.Little more than a year ago, things were much different.Snell, Tampa Bay’s 2011 first-round draft pick Gerardo Parra Jersey , was demoted to Triple-A Durham during last season with a 6-14 career record. Since returning to the Rays on Aug. 8, he’s 25-6.“Knowing what it’s like to struggle, that helps me a lot,” Snell said. “It’s always in the back of my head.”Snell won his eighth straight start. The 25-year-old lefty struck out five to reach 200 this year, walked two and threw 92 pitches, exiting with a 1.97 ERA.No one in the big leagues won more than 18 games last season. Rick Porcello won 22 in 2016, with Max Scherzer and J.A. Happ each winning 20.Tampa Bay has won four straight and 13 of 16 this month in a last-ditch attempt to wrest the AL second wild-card playoff berth from Oakland. The Rays trail the A’s by 5 ½ games.“It feels good being counted on,” Snell said, “because I know what it’s like to not be counted on.”“We’ve just been playing good team baseball when I pitch. The guys are helping me swinging it, playing defense, and I’ve been doing well as well,” he said.Manager Kevin Cash didn’t even pretend he knew Snell would win 20 games or strike out 200 this season.“No,” Cash said. “I think Blake deserves the bulk of the credit, but there’s been a lot of people in our player development system, (coaches) Kyle Snyder and Stan (Boroski), a lot of work has gone in. And I think our catchers deserve a lot of credit.”The Rays scored three times in the fourth against Yovani Gallardo (8-6). Willie Adames hit a two-run homer and Joey Wendle had an RBI double.Snell remained the AL leader in wins over Cleveland’s Corey Kluber, who won his 19th on Tuesday night.Rangers catcher Robinson Chirinos had the only hit against Snell, a second-inning single.“His fastball command http://www.rockiesfanproshop.com/authentic-todd-helton-jersey , it was not great today,” Chirinos said. “I was able to hit the breaking ball my first at-bat. After that, I thought he was going to throw me more fastballs, but he stuck with the same plan — changeup, changeup, changeup.”Three Rays relievers completed the four-hit shutout with four scoreless innings.Wendle tied a career high with four hits, including two doubles.TRAINER’S ROOMRays: C Jesus Sucre fouled a pitch off the top of his left foot. He was hobbling after the game, but X-rays were negative.Rangers: OF Joey Gallo missed his second game since fouling a ball off his right little toe over the weekend in San Diego. Manager Jeff Banister said, “I don’t foresee it lingering.”GOOSE EGGSThe Rangers were not shut out their first 75 home games through Sunday. Now Texas has been shut out on a total of only six hits in the first two games of this three-game series. They hadn’t been shut out back-to-back on consecutive nights at home since Detroit blanked Texas Aug. 13-14, 2016.WELCOME BACKThe crowd cheered ex-Ranger Carlos Gomez when, standing at the dugout railing, he made a one-handed grab of a one-hop foul ball by Sucre.UP NEXTRays: Diego Castillo (3-2, 3.24) will start as the opener for the fifth time in 11 days.Rangers: LHP Yohander Mendez (2-1, 3.86) will start the final game in the three-game series on Wednesday afternoon.
  13. NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Mets are transferring longtime media relations boss Jay Horwitz to a new role as vice president of alumni public relations and team historian.Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon announced Horwitz’s job change Wednesday at a press conference that was more of a roast by former players Anthony Rendon Jersey , coaches and executives. Horwitz has been with the team for nearly 40 years, and figures from throughout his tenure attended.Among them: Darryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden, Mookie Wilson, Keith Hernandez, John Franco, Joe Torre, Terry Collins, Steve Phillips and Omar Minaya. A number of current Mets also attended, including captain David Wright.Horwitz will work in his new role to aid next season’s 50-year anniversary of the Mets 1969 World Series championship, and also on further connecting the club’s alumni. The 73-year-old Horwitz has been beloved by players for his bumbling but loyal personality.Horwitz recalled how he spilled a can of orange juice on general manager Frank Cashen during his job interview in 1980 but got the job anyway. He was then late to his first day of work, mistakenly commuting to Brooklyn instead of Shea Stadium.Horwitz has often been a subject of clubhouse pranks. Wright admitted to repeatedly rubbing eye black on Horwitz’s binoculars. Franco said he used to cut off Horwitz’s ties in his sleep. Horwitz even said players once “made a No. 2 in my bed” on the road.“The older guys taught me, if they don’t like you http://www.nationalsfanproshop.com/authentic-daniel-murphy-jersey , they won’t screw around with you,” Horwitz said.Players also tried to set up Horwitz on dates during road trips. Some were more successful than others — he claimed to break out in hives after the team brought a stripper to the Wrigley Field clubhouse for his birthday years ago.Wright also said Horwitz was instrumental in helping him establish a good relationship with the New York media, and Franco praised Horwitz for his loyalty.“He would fight for the players,” Franco said. He later choked up when adding “I love you man. Thank you.”Horwitz’s first assistant with the Mets, Tim Hamilton, died Wednesday. Hamilton predated Horwitz with New York, and Horwitz told The Associated Press that Hamilton was a “great guy” who helped acclimate him to life at Shea Stadium. Hamilton’s ex-wife, Lorraine Hamilton, is still the Mets’ executive director of broadcasting and events. HOUSTON (AP) — Cleveland Indians ace Corey Kluber insisted Friday’s loss had nothing to do with his playoff woes last season. It just looked that way, a lot.A year after he was hit hard in a pair of postseason starts, it happened all over. The Houston Astros tagged him for three home runs and roughed up the Indians 7-2 in Game 1 of the AL Division Series.“I don’t think they’re related,” Kluber said. “I don’t think that the starts from last postseason had any bearing on today. I just made a few mistakes to the wrong guys.”Kluber’s performance followed a strong regular season in which he won a career-best 20 games, posting a 2.89 ERA across an AL-leading 215 innings.Last season Adam Eaton Jersey , Kluber went 18-4 with an MLB-best 2.25 ERA in the regular season to earn his second AL Cy Young Award. In the playoffs, however, Kluber’s ERA jumped to 12.79 in two starts after he allowed nine runs and four homers in two ALDS tries against the New York Yankees.Kluber has enjoyed success at this time of year, too, nearly pitching the Indians to the 2016 championship. Cleveland hasn’t won the World Series since 1948, and was counting on Kluber to take them far.Like the right-hander, Indians manager Terry Francona also said Kluber’s 2017 postseason was unrelated to his 2018 playoff debut.“Last year has nothing to do with today,” Francona said. “They’re a good team. He made a couple mistakes. They made him pay for it.”When asked if he believes Kluber is healthy, Francona — seemingly surprised by the question — replied: “Kluber? Oh, yeah.”Kluber struggled with his location early, hitting two batters after plunking only three in the regular season. But he didn’t allow a hit until the fourth inning when Alex Bregman homered. After walking Yuli Gurriel, Kluber gave up two-out singles to Tyler White and Josh Reddick that produced another run.George Springer led off the fifth inning with a 402-foot homer. Two pitches later, Jose Altuve also connected http://www.nationalsfanproshop.com/authentic-max-scherzer-jersey , sending a drive a drive to the Crawford Boxes in left field that put Houston up 4-0.“I really just left the ball elevated over the plate and picked the wrong three guys to do that to,” Kluber said. “You’ve got to be able to keep the ball in the ballpark in these games.”Marwin Gonzalez chased Kluber with a single in the fifth inning. In 4 2/3 innings, Kluber allowed four runs on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts.Kluber faced the Astros twice this season, both in May. In the first start in Houston, Kluber gave up two runs and six hits and struck out 10 in seven innings of a 5-4 win. Six days later, he held the Astros scoreless in 6 1/3 innings in an 11-2 loss.“We have a lot of respect for him and we all know how good he is,” Altuve said. “We all were aware of that. Sometimes when you’re facing a guy like him, the only thing you can control is to swing the bat. That was our mindset. We were pretty good since the first pitch and good things happened today.”Astros manager AJ Hinch said finding success against Kluber meant staying patient and capitalizing on mistakes.“He’s not an easy guy to center up, so you’ve got to be disciplined about what side of the plate you’re going to pick and which of his pitches that move all over the place that you’re going to focus on,” Hinch said. “And don’t miss the one or two or three mistakes he might make from time to time.”
  14. Joseph Garnett Jr./Getty ImagesSunday was a relatively quiet day on the MLB trade front Chuck Klein Jersey , with the most notable move being the Atlanta Braves' acquisition of Baltimore Orioles reliever Brad Brach. However, the non-waiver trade deadline of 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, July 31 looms large, so chances are there will be a ton of movement over the next couple days. Here's a look at the latest rumors on three notable names.Chris ArcherThe biggest name left on the trading block may be Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Chris Archer, who has been the subject of numerous trade rumors recently.Jon Heyman of Fancred Sports has the latest:Jon Heyman JonHeymanrays had two scouts watching top yankees lip prospect justus sheffield yesterday, adding intrigue to chris archer rumors (as Joelsherman1 mentioned). another scout said: quot;was just ok ... fighting fastball command.quot; padres still seen as current favorites for archer -- if he goesMarc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Timesdiscussed what a possible deal for Archer could look like: "With the Rays advancing Saturday to weighing offers, the question ultimately will be whether a team is willing to give up enough now, with a catcher and power-hitting outfielder a good start to a package, to get the Rays to say yes rather than wait for the offseason, or longer, to deal him."Archer has been up and down in 2018. Only one of his first six outings was a quality start, but he bounced back in May and held the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and Oakland Athletics scoreless in 12-plus combined frames. An abdominal strain kept him out for a month, but he returned healthy prior to the All-Star break. After allowing three earned runs in 3.1 innings against the Detroit Tigers in his first appearance back, Archer has a 3.86 ERA in three starts, including 23 strikeouts in 16.1 innings. At his best, Archer is a strikeout machine who can give a team seven-plus strong innings. Given that he's likely the best starting pitcher left on the trading block, he should return a sizable haul for Tampa Bay. Adam JonesThe Baltimore Orioles are clear sellers at this year's deadline, as they have already dealt the aforementioned Brach, shortstop Manny Machado and southpaw reliever Zach Britton.A few other names have been in the mix, including center fielder Adam Jones, a five-time All-Star who has been a mainstay in the Baltimore outfield for a decade. However http://www.philliesfanproshop.com/authentic-jimmy-foxx-jersey , it doesn't look like Jones is going anywhere for now,per Heyman:Jon Heyman JonHeymanthere was a chance to go to Philly, but Adam Jones has decided to stay in Baltimore (at least for now) due to reasons of family, friends, fans and his charity. cant blame him for that. tough call, he appreciates the interest. possibility to revisit after the deadline also.Of course, the reasons for Jones wanting to stay are certainly legitimate, especially given that he's established roots in Baltimore since 2008. If he ever happens to change his mind, a playoff-contending team would be getting a solid outfielder who could plug a gap in a team's lineup. For the season, the 32-year-old Jones is hitting .285 alongside 11 home runs and 44 RBI.He's also in the midst of a hot streak at the moment, per Baseball-Reference, as Jones has 13 hits in his last 32 at-bats and earned a 1.020 OPS during that span.Jones is a free agent after this season, and given the team's rebuilding direction, it's unlikely that he'll be an Oriole in 2019. Comments from general manager Dan Duquette didn't sound promising: "(Jones') contract is up. I don鈥檛 know whether Adam will be here or not, but the club is going in the direction of younger ballplayers. I can tell you that."Ultimately, when Jones leaves town, chances are it will be via free agency in the offseason.Keone KelaTexas Rangers closer Keone Kela has saved 24 games in 25 appearances. He's just 25 years old and has to deal with the obstacle of pitching in Globe Life Park in Arlington, which is one of the most notorious hitter parks in the league, half the time.In other words, he's a hot commodity as the trade deadline nears, and naturally Darren Daulton Jersey , a few contending teams are interested.Per Ken Gurnick of MLB.com, the Los Angeles Dodgers are in the mix:Ken Gurnick kengurnickPlease add Rangers closer Keone Kela to the seemingly endless list of players the Dodgers are looking at before Tuesdays trade deadline.Per Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports and The Athletic, and Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Atlanta Braves are also involved:Ken Rosenthal Ken_RosenthalHearing same. Per sources, the interest is in potentially both Kela and Diekman. #Braves willing to move Gohara. Z8e9dpMo3XThe Braves have a much bigger need for Kela than the Dodgers. Closer Aroldys Vizcaino is on the disabled list, and manager Brian Snitker said on July 23 that the 27-year-old was still two to three weeks away from throwing. That means Vizcaino likely won't start doing so until the second or even third week of August. As is, the team's bullpen has not fared particularly well this year, as it is currently ranked 20th in team ERA. The addition of Brach could certainly help, although the team may need more reinforcements, especially if Vizcaino is out until September. As it stands, a Braves-Rangers deal involving Kela seems like a real possibility. ATLANTA (AP) — Jameson Taillon extended the Atlanta Braves‘ home struggles, leaving the NL East tight entering the final month of the season.Gregory Polanco’s eighth-inning single drove in Adam Frazier with the tiebreaking run, Taillon allowed only two runs and the Pittsburgh Pirates recovered after blowing a two-run lead to beat the Braves 3-2 on Friday night. The first-place Braves, who have lost five of their last seven, saw their NL East lead shrink to two games over Philadelphia entering September.“There are definitely some difficult and intense situations, but I think our mindset is to continue to have fun,” third baseman Johan Camargo said through a translator. Ronald Acuna Jr. and Camargo and hit home runs in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, for a 2-2 tie before the Pirates reclaimed the lead in the eighth. The Braves have lost seven of their last eight home games.Manager Brian Snitker said his young players, including 20-year-old Acuna, 21-year-old Ozzie Albies and 24-year-old Camargo http://www.philliesfanproshop.com/authentic-maikel-franco-jersey , will gain valuable experience in the final month.“It’s going to be interesting. It’s going to be a great experience for them,” Snitker said. “You can’t simulate that anywhere.”Taillon (11-9) gave up two runs on five hits in seven innings.“Tonight was one of those nights that was really fun,” Taillon said, adding he had a good chemistry with catchers Elias Diaz and Francisco Cervelli. “It seemed like everything they were putting down I already had gripped and already had in my mind and I was able to execute.”Felipe Vazquez pitched out of trouble in the ninth for his 29th save in 33 opportunities. Camargo hit a one-out single up the middle, past a diving Josh Harrison, and advanced to second on Kurt Suzuki’s single to right. Camargo was forced out at third on a fielder’s choice before Vazquez struck out Dansby Swanson to end the game.Frazier, pinch-hitting for Taillon, led off the eighth with a walk from Brad Brach (2-4) and moved to second when Albies bobbled Starling Marte’s grounder at second base for an error. Frazier scored the unearned run on Polanco’s single up the middle.Corey Dickerson led off the second with a double down the right-field line and scored on a single up the middle by Diaz. Anibal Sanchez ended the second with three straight strikeouts to begin a stretch of retiring 12 consecutive batters.Sanchez allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits in 5 1/3 innings.TRAINER’S ROOMPirates: Diaz left the game in the seventh with a sore right hamstring. He was limping after running to first on his groundout to shortstop.Braves: RHP Peter Moylan aggravated his right forearm strain, ending his rehab assignment and hopes of returning this season. He was transferred to the 60-day disabled list. … RHP Arodys Vizcaino (right shoulder inflammation) threw live batting practice and is ready to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Gwinnett on Sunday. … RHP Brandon McCarthy (knee) allowed two runs on four hits in two innings in his rehab outing with Gwinnett.CONSISTENT TAILLONTaillon became one of only three pitches in the majors with at least 17 consecutive starts allowing no more than three earned runs.BIG MONTHAcuna capped a productive August. The rookie led the NL with 39 hits and 25 runs and tied for the league lead with 11 homers, giving him 22. The Braves said Acuna is the first NL rookie over the last 110 seasons with at least 39 hits and 11 homers in a month.GREAT CATCHBraves center fielder Ender Inciarte made a leaping catch of a drive hit by David Freese to end the first inning. Watching the catch from the mound, Sanchez pumped his right fist in approval.REINFORCEMENTSSnitker said catcher Rene Rivera, obtained off waivers from the Angels on Wednesday, will be among four or five players promoted to the Atlanta roster on Saturday. Snitker said more players may join Atlanta after Gwinnett’s season ends on Monday.UP NEXTPirates: RHP Chris Archer (4-7, 4.72) has a 6.45 ERA in five starts with Pittsburgh since being acquired from Tampa Bay on July 31. He allowed one run in four innings in a 1-0 loss to the Braves on Aug. 20.Braves: RHP Kevin Gausman (9-9, 3.89) will face the Pirates for the second time since his trade to the Braves. Gausman threw eight scoreless innings, allowing four hits, in a 6-1 win at Pittsburgh on Aug. 21.

The 108-win Red Sox got a solid effort from their bullpen after an expected duel between aces Chris Sale and Clayton Kershaw never developed.Xander Bogaerts hit into a go-ahead forceout in the fifth and Rafael Devers followed with an RBI single for a 5-3 lead. After Manny Machado hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh for his third RBI, Nunez homered over the Green Monster off Alex Wood in the bottom half.Boston’s David Price faces Hyun-Jin Ryun in Game 2 on Wednesday. This marks just the third World Series in which both starting pitchers in the first two games are lefties. WASHINGTON (AP) — No pitcher ever has put together a season quite like Jacob deGrom’s 2018 for the New York Mets. The 23 consecutive quality starts are a record. So are the 28 starting assignments in a row allowing three runs or fewer. The 1.77 ERA isn’t too shabby, either. And he might just wind up with the fewest wins for a starting pitcher who earns a Cy Young Award, too. Boosting his bid for the NL honor, deGrom broke a quality-starts mark first established by Bob Gibson a half-century ago, allowing one run and three singles in seven innings to help the Mets beat the Washington Nationals 4-2 Friday night.“He’s just getting better and better. He’s a special ballplayer. He goes out there every night and it’s tough that he only has nine wins or eight wins or whatever he has Billy Williams Jersey ,” said Nationals slugger Bryce Harper, who went 0 for 3 against deGrom, including a pair of strikeouts and a chopper back to the pitcher. “He’s one of the best in baseball — from both leagues. You know what you’re going to get out of him every single night and tonight he was pretty tough.”About an hour after their loss ended, Harper and the Nationals officially were eliminated from contention in the NL East, dropping nine games behind the Atlanta Braves with eight remaining. Atlanta beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-5. Washington won the division each of the past two seasons under then-manager Dusty Baker; the club is 77-77 under rookie skipper Dave Martinez.Throwing fastballs in the 97-99 mph range, deGrom (9-9) struck out eight and walked one. Gibson in 1968 and Chris Carpenter in 2005 each had single-season runs of 22 quality starts. No one had done better. Until now.“I want us to be in every ballgame that I pitch, so I guess that kind of is an accomplishment of a goal that I have,” deGrom said. “So I want to continue to do that moving forward.”His next start will be Wednesday against visiting Atlanta. That’s for sure. Neither deGrom nor manager Mickey Callaway would rule out the possibility of an extra outing on short rest on the regular season’s final day http://www.chicagocubsteamshop.com/authentic-jon-lester-jersey , Sept. 30, at home against Miami. The right-handed deGrom has given up as many as four earned runs in only one of his 31 starts in 2018, back on April 10 against the Marlins. So Friday’s game was pretty much wrapped up by the third inning, which ended with the Mets ahead 4-1 against Joe Ross (0-1).DeGrom is locked in what’s considered a tight race for Cy Young honors — and perhaps league MVP consideration, too — with Nationals ace Max Scherzer, who is 17-7 with a 2.57 ERA and 290 strikeouts. Scherzer has won the past two Cy Young Awards in the NL, plus one in the AL when he played for the Detroit Tigers. In the Mets’ 5-4 victory in 12 innings Thursday, Scherzer gave up three runs in seven innings and struck out 13.Entering Friday Fergie Jenkins Jersey , deGrom boasted a majors-leading 1.78 ERA, 251 Ks and 45 walks, and ranked No. 1 in various other categories.DeGrom looked good from the outset, striking out leadoff hitter Victor Robles with a 98 mph fastball, then getting Harper to swing through a 99 mph offering to end the first inning. Harper missed a 93 mph slider to strike out again in the fourth.“He’s just able to do things other guys aren’t,” Mets teammate Jay Bruce said about deGrom. “He goes out there and it’s been pretty automatic. He’s either going to give up zero or one, pretty much every time he goes out there.”TRAINER’S ROOMMets: Mesoraco hadn’t played since leaving a game Sept. 3 because of a bulging disk in his back. He was 3 for 3 with a walk.Nationals: OF Adam Eaton was out of the starting lineup for the fourth time in five games, because of a sore and stiff left knee.UP NEXTRHP Corey Oswalt (3-2 http://www.chicagocubsteamshop.com/authentic-greg-maddux-jersey , 6.31 ERA) will start for the Mets on Saturday against RHP Austin Voth (0-1, 11.81), who will take RHP Tanner Roark’s spot in the rotation. Roark’s wife recently gave birth.
