  1. The San Francisco 49ers beat the Detroit LIons 30-27 in an ugly win. It is still a win Cheap Mike McGlinchey Jersey , but the team has a lot to work on, none more than cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon who had a very bad day in coverage. While Richard Sherman was not targeted near as often, Witherspoon was picked on all afternoon, leading to the 49ers benching him late in the 4th quarter. Sherman has been seen as Witherspoon’s mentor and was asked about what may be Witherspoon’s worst day as a pro in his post-game press conference. Sherman said whether he had a good game or a bad game , Witherspoon has 24 hours and then it’s time to move on.It’s not going to get any easier for Witherspoon. The 49ers are traveling to Kansas City to face the Chiefs. A team whose aerial attack is nothing short of elite. If they can’t get the ball to Tyreek Hill, they can elect to go towards Travis Kelce or Sammy Watkins instead and achieve the same results. Sherman is going to figure into the Chiefs’ game plan as will Witherspoon. Witherspoon no doubt has a chance to bounce back, but no matter who the 49ers put him on next Sunday, he’s going to have his work cut out for him. “I believe in him ,” Sherman said later on. “I believe in him, I think he believes in himself, there’s just simple mistakes.” The NFL closes out Week 8 with a matchup between the top and the bottom of the AFC East. The 2-5 Buffalo Bills host the 5-2 New England Patriots, with kickoff set for 5:15 p.m. PT on ESPN. Joe Tessitore and Jason Witten will call the game from the booth Cheap Jimmy Garoppolo Jersey , with Booger McFarland serving as an analyst from the field. Lisa Salters continues her duties as the sideline reporter. The Patriots are on track to once again claim the AFC East title. Miami lost in Week 8 and now sit a game and a half back. There’s a lot of football left, but it’s hard to see the Dolphins or Jets doing enough to climb back into this. Meanwhile, the Bills are 2-5 and have no answers at quarterback following Josh Allen’s injury. They have a shot at a top five draft pick, and will likely stick with that group after Monday’s game.New England is a 14-point point favorite Youth Weston Richburg Jersey , according to sportsbooks monitored by Odds Shark. The Bills are a dumpster fire and should lose this game, but that’s a lot of points for a divisional matchup. I would not be surprised if the Patriots rolled Buffalo, but as a betting man, I’m taking the two touchdowns in hopes the Bills can at least get a late backdoor cover. I suppose I’m a glutton for punishment.Patriots vs. Bills Cheap Fred Warner Jersey , MNFTime: 5:15 p.m. PTLocation: New Era FieldChannel: ESPNLive Stream: WatchESPNOdds: Patriots -14
  2. Francisco 49ers as they prepare for their Week 8 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals. Coach Kyle Shanahan spoke to the media and relayed Friday’s injury report Youth Brock Coyle Jersey , featuring some notable updates that will impact the 49ers’ starting lineup come Sunday.Running back Matt Breida returned to practice Friday in limited fashion after sitting out most of the week with a persistent ankle injury. The 49ers’ leading back has been battling the injury for weeks, forcing him to make an early exit against the Rams in Week 7. He’s listed as questionable against the Cardinals.Veteran cornerback Richard Sherman also returned to practice Friday and is questionable for Sunday. He said Thursday that he felt confident he’d be able to go against the Cardinals but was unsure if he’d return for next Thursday’s primetime matchup against the Oakland Raiders at Levi’s Stadium.Center Weston Richburg (knee) did not practice Friday and is listed as questionable. If he is unable to go, Erik Magnuson or Mike Person would handle center duties.Receiver Pierre Gar莽on (shoulder, knee) is the only player listed as doubtful on the injury report. His likely absence against the Cardinals could mean more action for rookie receiver Dante Pettis, who returns this week after missing three games following a knee injury suffered in the first quarter against the Los Angeles Chargers.49ers final injury reportDoubtful: WR Pierre Gar莽on (shoulder, knee)Questionable: RB Matt Breida (ankle), C Weston Richburg (knee), CB Richard Sherman (calf)Cardinals final injury reportOut: S Tre Boston (shoulder Womens Ahkello Witherspoon Jersey , ribs), G Jeremy Vujnovich (hamstring)Questionable: K Phil Dawson (right hip), TE Jermaine Gresham (heel), G Mike Iupati (back), DT Corey Peters (ankle), G Justin Pugh (hand)Survivor, straight up picks for Week 4 NFL action We are entering the fourth week of the season, with 30 of the 32 teams about to be through the first quarter of their schedule. Washington and Carolina have a bye week Womens Solomon Thomas Jersey , but the remaining 30 teams are in action, starting with a huge potential playoff preview on Thursday Night Football between the Los Angeles Rams and Minnesota Vikings. It’s time once again for our pick ‘em and Survivor pool contest options. We have the weekly prediction contest this season, and you can make those picks here. We also have a traditional “Pick ‘Em” contest. If you still want to join, the group name is Niners Nation, the group ID is 45734, and the password is go49ers. You’re pretty far behind, but feel free to join.We continue with Survivor pools, after a huge chunk of people were knocked out for picking the Minnesota Vikings Womens Dante Pettis Jersey , Jacksonville Jaguars, or New England Patriots. I took the Chicago Bears, and barely survived over the Arizona Cardinal. This followed me taking the New Orleans Saints in Week 2, and the Baltimore Ravens in Week 1.This week, the Los Angeles Chargers (hosting the San Francisco 49ers), Green Bay Packers (hosting the Buffalo Bills), and Jacksonville Jaguars (hosting the New York Jets) are the three most popular picks. The 49ers downgrade at quarterback with C.J. Beathard, but the Chargers are not a particularly good team. I think LA probably wins Youth Richard Sherman Jersey , but I think the 49ers are going to give them a scare. So much so in fact that I might take them as a ten-point favorite in the Super Contest. For Survivor, I am leaning towards the Packers — I look for a Bills letdown after that upset.Tonight, Week 4 opens with the Rams hosting the Vikings. The Rams are a touchdown favorite in this one, even with a host of injuries piling up. Cornerback Aqib Talib was placed on injured reserve with an ankle injury, and cornerback Marcus Peters is questionable with a calf injury. I think the Rams could pull this out, but I think the line might be a little inflated by the Vikings’ shocking loss to Buffalo. I’m gonna take the points with Minnesota. Here are the rest of my straight-up picks. I was 9-7 last week, bringing my season record to 29-17-2. 3. Good morning Womens Riley Dixon Jersey , New York Giants fans! Here are a few non-Odell Beckham Jr. headlines for your Saturday morning.Could Olivier Vernon debut vs. Eagles? The Giants have a short week coming up after Sunday as they host the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday Night Football.Maybe, just maybe, Olivier Vernon will debut after missing five games with his high ankle sprain.“(Olivier Vernon) had a really good week, he was close [to being ready for the Panthers], but not quite close enough. So we backed off just a little bit today to give him some rest. I think you probably saw that he wasn’t out there with a helmet on, so that’s really what happened. Best week, no setbacks, just we felt like here at the end of the week because he did so much more and he was involved in team activity, just give him a little rest moving forward,” head coach Pat Shurmur said. “I’m optimistic [about Thursday]. I felt really good about this week too, so we will just have to see.”McGovern: No single reason for zone read issuesLinebackers coach Bill McGovern was asked for his perspective on defending the zone read Authentic Dalvin Tomlinson Jersey , and why the Giants have struggled with it this season.“For a defense, it’s doing your job, being responsible. One guy gets his wrong, you get out of your gap, you don’t have the guy there, because the quarterback being a runner now adds an extra gap,” McGovern said. “It’s all of it, it’s not one person. If it was one person, we would change that guy. We’ve missed an assignment here, we’ve missed an assignment there, or a guy being in the wrong spot Womens Sterling Shepard Jersey , and maybe it was a bad call on our part, too. It could be all of that.”Around the Inter-GoogleFox's Brian Baldinger says of Eli Manning: 'He looks old out there' | NewsdayOther observers say Giants QB's production can rebound with better protection.Giants’ other standout rookie continues getting betterCHARLOTTE, N.C. — Through four games, Will Hernandez is the highest-rated rookie offensive lineman in the NFL, according to Pro Football Focus, performing... The 2-7 New York Giants look to actually start a winning streak Sunday at MetLife Stadium when they host the 3-6 Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Giants have not won back-to-back games since Weeks 14 and 15 of the 2016 season, when they defeated the Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions in successive games. To do that, the Giants are going to have to do something they have yet to do this season — win at game at MetLife Stadium. The Giants are 0-4 in their home building Here are some of the other numbers to know heading into Sunday’s game.350 — With three touchdown passes in Week 11, Eli Manning (350) became the eighth player to reach 350 in NFL history. Manning is tied with Ben Roethlisberger for seventh-most touchdown passes of all time. 142 — Odell Beckham Jr. (858) needs 142 yards receiving to reach 1,000 yards receiving for the 4th time in his career. 62 — Through Week 11, Saquon Barkley ranks second among running backs in the NFL with 62 receptions.8 — The number of sacks former Giant Jason Pierre-Paul Authentic Evan Engram Jersey , now with the Bucs, has this season.753 —Passing yards (54,247) needed by Manning to reach 55,000 for his career. 30.7 — What Corey Coleman averaged in three kickoff returns Monday night, the first time he has been used in that role during his NFL career.10 — The number of sacks the Giants have as a team. The Giants are also last in the league in Adjusted Sack Rate, per Football Outsiders, at 2.9 percent. 4.6 — That’s the percentage of time the Giants get a sack on what are considered “blitz downs,” per SB Nation’s advanced statistics. That is last in the league.-18.8 — That is the percentage of running plays on which the Giants fail to meet the “expected success rate” of the play. That is 31st in the league. Thanks to the brilliance of Saquon Barkley, the Giants are actually No. 1 in the league in marginal explosiveness of running plays. Barkley is tied for third in the league with 7 running plays of 20 yards or more. Only James Connor of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Matt Breida of the San Francisco 49ers (8) have more.
  4. are considered the beginning of the NFL draft process everyone a chance to see how the small-school hopefuls who dominated their level and are stepping up to face the big boys will match up.One of those small school players who has caught the NFL’s attention this season is John Cominsky Cheap B.J. Hill Jersey , a defensive end who played at Division II Charleston. Cominsky earned an invite to the Senior Bowl and it didn’t take long for him to have his “do I belong here?” moment. It came on his first play of the first Senior Bowl practice. Cominsky recently spent some time chatting with Big Blue View for the ‘Valentine’s Views’ podcast.Let’s let him explain what happened on that very first rep:“I’d say it was my very first play of practice. My very first play I got up and here comes big Kansas State [Dalton Risner] coming at me. He’s lining up. He’s big, he’s strong. I’m thinking in my mind ’OK, here we go. The moment of truth,’” Cominsky said.“Anybody from Division II is going to be like ‘OK, here’s my chance. Here’s where I really find out where I’m at and if I’m going to be able to hang.’“So rep 1 Kansas State comes up to me and I’m playing the 5 technique, outside shoulder of the tackle. It’s thrown away from me. I listened to what my coach said and I got into that tackle as hard as I could and I put him right on his butt.“I was like, ‘alright I came from Division II and I put this guy on his butt. Here I am. I belong.’”Defensive end? Really?Cominsky was a 215-pound quarterback at Barberton High School who had no Division I scholarship offers. He landed at Charleston with no idea he would be a defensive end.“When I showed up at orientation that first day and d-end was next to my name my head kind of turned around. My stomach kinda flipped, I’m like ‘oh, crap, defensive end, dude, I’m tiny, I’m 215 pounds. That’s so different. I’ve never played defensive end before Cheap Dalvin Tomlinson Jersey ,” Cominsky said.“I was a little shocked about it, but I was so open-minded. I went to Charleston because they were my first offer, my only offer, so I was open-minded when I went there. I’m thinking, I’ll be equipment helper if I have to. I just want to be on this college team, that was really my mindset 鈥?I was ready to do whatever it took to be on that team.”Growing into a starAfter red-shirting as a freshman and admitting that “I got my butt whooped on practice squad for a year,” Cominsky began a process of weight training, eating and working that saw him grow into a dominant 6-foot-5, 285-pound player who has NFL teams intrigued.Cominsky had 6.5 sacks and 73 tackles in 2017, earning Division II preseason second-team All-America honors. “It’s just been stepping up every single year. I’ve gotten nothing but better, I haven’t stale-mated. I’ve only improved since I got to Charleston,” Cominsky said.John Cominsky (5)University of Charleston Athletic DepartmentBigger and betterCominsky believes he is just scratching the surface of his ability.“I think there’s probably five or six tiers above me where I’m at now. I went in there [Charleston] with a blank slate. I had nothing. I’ve developed over four years, but what I developed through four years maybe a kid developed through high school ,” Cominsky said.“I think now it’s time to start learning a little bit more technical stuff 鈥?I don’t even think it’s just one more step, I think it’s probably three or four tiers that I have to get to.”John CominskyScouting reports reference Cominsky’s intriguing athleticism for a man his size. He told Big Blue View maintaining and improving it is something he has been conscious of throughout the time he has been packing on the pounds.“If I think of my audience as being kids in college or kids that are in high school listening the biggest thing that I learned through experience was on top of putting on the weight you have to consistently be doing things around your athleticism, whatever that is. For me it was working the ladder, doing sprints, changing direction a lot, doing jumps, going and playing basketball a little bit, making sure I’m still athletic on a basketball court, box jumps, anything that challenges your athleticism. “In my eyes I think I gained athleticism because I worked on those things. It’s not just working on getting bigger and stronger.”He thinks he can get bigger.“I think I have 20-25 pounds that I believe I could gain and maintain athleticism. Over my four years at Charleston I kind of developed a notion of myself knowing my body fat and what it can handle. I’m super light on my feet right now. I’m as light as I’ve ever been at 285 鈥?I feel like I’m back to 245. I’m jumping out of the gym and I’m cutting like I’m 245 again,” Cominsky said.“I could easily be 305, 310 and run the same speed.”Cominsky talked about a lot more during our 20-minute conversation. The first round of the 2018-2019 College Football Playoffs is here!It was a foregone conclusion that Alabama would be one of the teams playing today. The other three teams Cheap Jon Halapio Jersey , however, had fraught paths which lead them to their final rankings. For much of the year it was assumed that some combination of Georgia, Ohio State, and Michigan would be among the playoff teams, but they all wound up falling just short. Joining Alabama today are the Clemson Tigers, Oklahoma Sooners, and Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Considering these games feature the top four ranked teams in the nation, this evening is sure to be rich with scouting opportunities for April’s draft. There is the distinct possibility that we will be watching future New York Giants in these games.Cotton Bowl - Clemson vs. Notre DameESPN - 4 p.m.The story of this game might be the players not on the field. Clemson had three players suspended after testing positive for a banned substance — a suspension which as since been upheld after the B-sample came back positive as well. Among those players is defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, who might be the best nose tackle in the draft and has been the rock in the middle of Clemson’s talented defensive line. But even without Lawrence, EDGE Clellin Ferrell and DT Christian Wilkins will likely give Notre Dame fits. Of course, Notre Dame boasts a talented squad of their own, including DT Jerry Tillery and CB Julian Love. And if you aren’t happy about Romeo Okwara being cut only to have a break-out season for the Detroit Lions, keep an eye on Julian Okwara , Notre Dame’s 6’4”, 240 pound EDGE. The younger Okwara brother is only a red-shirt sophomore, but he has submitted his name to the Advisory Committee for a draft grade. (Their parents named them Romeo and Julian? Just... Who will play quarterback for Alabama, Tua Tagovailoa or Jalen Hurts? What will Kyler Murry do after this season? The fact that this game could pit the Heisman Trophy winner against the runner up should be a story all its own. Will Oklahoma play defense? Can Alabama slow down Oklahoma’s playmakers and wide-open scheme? From a draft perspective, this game is absolutely chock-full of prospects. In particular, keep an eye on Oklahoma RT Cody Ford. 7. games coming out of the bye week where they did not score a touchdown in the first quarter. In those 10 seasons Womens Jesse James Jersey , the Steelers have scored a total of six points on two field goals in two separate games. It should also be noted that the Steelers went on to win seven out of those 10 games. Although they start slow, the Steelers still have a very solid record coming out to bye under Coach Tomlin, improving to 8-4 after the win against Cleveland.81-47Over the last 10 seasons, the Steelers outscored their opponents 81 –47 in the second quarter of each game coming off a bye during the regular season. So even though they have started slow, the Steelers Authentic Jon Bostic Jersey , as a whole, have “picked it up” before the half following their bye week. Outscoring the Browns 14–0 in the second quarter on Sunday definitely helped to increase this total.489Of a possible 493 defensive snaps this season, Sean Davis has logged 489. Other than missing four snaps against the Bengals in Week 6, Davis has played every snap on defense in every other game. Against the Browns, Davis was the only player to play every snap on the defensive side of the ball. After him , Terrell Edmunds and Joe Hayden played 62/64 snaps. In all, 19 different players logged snaps this past Sunday on defense.4-17Jaylen Samuels was given his first regular-season rushing attempts of his career against the Browns. He logged 4 carries for 17 yards on seven plays. It is the first time since Week 2 (Stevan Ridley with 3 carries for 18 yards) where a Pittsburgh Steelers’ running back other than James Conner has hit double-digits yards this season. 8 and 9By both James Conner and Antonio Brown finding the end zone twice on Sunday against the Browns, they extended their team lead for rushing and receiving TDs. After seven games, Antonio Brown is leading the Steelers in receiving touchdowns with eight, while James Conner has nine rushing scores. Brown’s total is currently leading the NFL in receiving touchdowns. Conner is second in rushing TDs only behind Todd Gurley with 11 (who has also played one more game).21-37On the Steelers current three-game win streak Authentic Bud Dupree Jersey , one driving factor behind their victories has been their third down conversion rate. Over this time, the Steelers are 21 for 37 on third down giving them a 56.7% rate of conversion. This week against Cleveland, the Steelers’s also added a fourth down conversion for a touchdown.175:44For anyone keeping track, Chris Boswell has not missed a kick in almost 180 minutes of game play. Boswell was a perfect 4/4 on PAT‘s while adding a 42-yard field goal. Running back Le'Veon Bell hasn’t told the Steelers about whether he’s reporting during the bye week, but he did have his eye on the team Sunday.Bell sent a tweet recognizing James Conner‘s strong play in the 28-21 win over the Bengals. Conner ran 19 times for 111 yards and two touchdowns to continue a good run as the top running back in Pittsburgh. Thoughts about whether that run will continue led to a joke from quarterback Ben Roethlisberger after the game.“He was a bowling ball today ,” Roethlisberger said, via “He was all over the place. What a great game, but I know it’s his last game for us, so, because Le’Veon’s coming back. I thought he did well in his last one.”Roethlisberger said last week that Conner should retain a role in the offense if and when Bell returns to the fold and Sunday’s performance was another strong argument in favor of that approach.
  8. Pittsburgh Steelers “It is not in our stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves.” (William Shakespeare)The central question which continues to bedevil Steelers Nation these days concerns the reasons why the Black-and-gold Cheap Terrell Edmunds Jersey , despite posting winning records in recent seasons, have been unable to take that final step to claim the franchise’s seventh NFL championship. This mystery isn’t just the elephant in the room — it’s more like the whale in the room. Reviewing the history of Steelers’ draft picks, you’ll encounter the interesting fact that the team’s first-ever draft choice, way back in 1936, was a halfback from Notre Dame by the unforgettable name of William Shakespeare. During the Depression era, pro football wasn’t a particularly lucrative profession, so Shakespeare the football player opted to quit the game to pursue a career in business instead. He was also a decorated, World War II hero in the Army. After the war, Shakespeare resumed his job at the Cincinnati Rubber Company, rising through the ranks to become the firm’s president in 1960.The famous handle of this original Steelers’ draft pick brings to mind a crucial distinction between players who enjoy long and stellar careers in the NFL, and those who — despite impressive pedigrees coming out of college — never quite make the grade at the professional level. So in view of the timeless, existential question posed four centuries ago by the “Bard of Avon,” it’s worthwhile examining the Steelers’ first-round draft picks over a 22-year span from 1997 to 2018 through the lens of Shakespeare’s famous dichotomy. Here’s the list:1997:Chad Scott, Cornerback (8 seasons with Pittsburgh)1998:Alan Faneca, Guard (10 seasons with Pittsburgh)1999: Troy Edwards, WR (3 seasons with Pittsburgh)2000: Plaxico Burress , WR (5 seasons with Pittsburgh)2001: Casey Hampton, NT (12 seasons with Pittsburgh)2002: Kendall Simmons, Guard (Due to injuries, played only 4 of 6 seasons with the team)2003: Troy Polamalu, Safety (12 seasons with Pittsburgh)2004: Ben Roethlisberger, QB (14th season with Pittsburgh)2005: Heath Miller, TE (10 seasons with Pittsburgh)2006: Santonio Holmes, WR (4 seasons with Pittsburgh)2007: Lawrence Timmons, LB (10 seasons with Pittsburgh)2008: Rashard Mendenhall, RB (5 seasons with Pittsburgh)2009: Ziggy Hood, DE (5 seasons with Pittsburgh)2010: Maurkice Pouncey, Center (9th season with Pittsburgh)2011: Cameron Heyward, DE (8th season with Pittsburgh)2012: David DeCastro, Guard (7th season with Pittsburgh)2013: Jarvis Jones, LB (4 seasons with Pittsburgh)2014: Ryan Shazier, LB (3 seasons and part of his 4th before serious injury)2015: Bud Dupree Youth Xavier Grimble Jersey , LB(4th season with Pittsburgh)2016: Artie Burns, CB (3rd season with Pittsburgh2017: T.J. Watt, LB (2nd season with Pittsburgh)2018: Terrell Edmunds (rookie season with Pittsburgh)In the big picture, the value of any first-rounder is determined not only by the quality of the player’s contributions to winning, but also by how long the player remains a viable member of the team. Comparing Pittsburgh’s first-round draft picks during the 1997-2007 period (11 seasons) to the 2008-2018 period (also 11 seasons), we find the average length of their careers with the Steelers was 8.36 years for the former period (‘97 to ‘07) and only 4.63 years for the most recent period (‘08 to ‘18). This comparison, of course, is somewhat skewed by the fact that the most recent period includes a few players who likely have several more years remaining in their careers with the Black-and-gold (e.g. Artie Burns, T.J. Watt, Terrell Edmunds and Bud Dupree). Nonetheless, the difference in total years played with the Steelers favors the former period by 41 seasons (92 vs. 51). So, considering that the jury is still out regarding the long-term viability of players such as Burns and Dupree — and also considering that the injury-shortened careers of Shazier and Kendall Simmons roughly cancel each other out in this comparison — it’s likely that the average career length of the Steelers’ top draft picks has shortened by roughly three years during the past decade to a term of approximately five years, compared to eight years in the pre-2008 period. Additionally, when we look at the quality of player contributions to the team’s overall success, the earlier 1997-2007 period includes names such as Alan Faneca, Plaxico Burress Youth JuJu Smith-Schuster Jersey , Casey Hampton, Troy Polamalu, Ben Roethlisberger, Heath Miller and Lawrence Timmons —whereas the more recent 2008-2018 period is limited to the names Maurkice Pouncey, Cameron Heyward, David DeCastro and Ryan Shazier. Considering strictly these well-known star performers for the Black-and-gold, the first-round picks from the earlier period currently hold a whopping, seasons-played advantage of 73-27. Thus, it seems highly unlikely that the Steelers’ first-rounders from 2008-2018 will contribute much more than approximately half as much to the team’s success during their careers as their predecessors did.One key reason for this striking difference, of course, is that today’s top NFL performers continue to earn larger and larger salaries with each passing year — so the tendency is for teams to draft less-costly replacements for star players who have reached the latter stages of their productive careers when their contracts weigh more heavily on the teams’ salary caps. But another factor is the recognition among top NFL draft picks that it’s advantageous to use free agency to maximize their income during the relatively brief periods of their lives while they’re playing pro football. No longer retaining key players for 8-12 years, which was commonplace in the past, there’s also been a significant decline in the team continuity which fans had come to expect from year to year. For example, after drafting Heath Miller in 2005, the Steelers went for an entire decade without ever wondering who would be lining up at tight end. But since his retirement, the position has often resembled musical chairs. Similarly Youth Jon Bostic Jersey , since Casey Hampton hung up his spikes, the Steelers have never been able to find that prototypical nose tackle to replace Hampton’s unparalleled run-stuffing and middle-clogging capabilities. Looking at the Steelers’ defense today, you’re seeing a lot more question marks out there than the positions solidly manned.Perhaps most importantly, the Steelers need to recapture the level of first-round draft success they enjoyed previously. In their 2009 and 2013 drafts, for example, the Steelers misfired badly, selecting Ziggy Hood and Jarvis Jones — two players who contributed precious little to the team’s success. Today, many fans are openly questioning the wisdom of drafting first-rounders Dupree and Burns in consecutive years. If neither of them pans out in the long run with the Steelers — and noting the equally dicey pick of running back Rashard Mendenhall in 2008 — this ultimately could represent five strikeouts for Rooney U. in their top draft picks out of the past eleven NFL Drafts. That’s certainly not any record to write home about. And despite the fact that Le’Veon Bell was a second-round pick, the current soap opera which the team is enduring with No. 26 underscores the fact that exceptional athletic talent, by itself, is no guarantee of success. As outstanding a player as Bell might be, his presence hasn’t proven to be the missing element in bringing a seventh Super Bowl title to the Steel City. Championship players are those willing to make the sacrifices necessary to be recognized as the best in their business. Sometimes this means putting the success of the team ahead of personal goals. While every team’s No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft is blessed with exceptional athletic talent, what makes any first-rounder a star — as well as a long-term contributor to a team’s success — is the burning desire, not necessarily to be the highest-paid player at his position, but simply being the best in a group of like-minded individuals firmly committed to that ultimate goal.In the decade prior to 2008, the Steelers mostly succeeded in the challenging task of finding players with the requisite talent and attitudes to build an NFL champion. But during the past decade Youth Javon Hargrave Jersey , they simply haven’t done as good a job in the springtime sweepstakes. Interestingly enough, Ben Roethlisberger — the one player Steelers Nation leans on most heavily to haul them up that Stairway to Seven — currently is the lone holdover from those exceptional, 1997-2007 drafts.2018 NFL Distribution Map: Check out whether you’ll see Steelers vs. Falcons in Week 5 If you were like me before I decided to sign up for the DirecTV Sunday Ticket package, every week I was wondering whether I’d be able to watch my beloved Steelers in the comfort of my own home, or if I’d have to go elsewhere to watch the game. Before there were websites devoted to this, it meant a lengthy trip on the television guide screen to see which game was scheduled to air, but now it’s just a click away. 9. 49ers Alfred Morris Jersey , with every team having played at least eight games on their schedule. As such, we are seeing midseason awards and assessments. This week, SI columnist Albert Breer put together his midseason awards. However, instead of simply making his picks, he reached out to various league personnel to get their thoughts on MVP, Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Offensive Rookie of the Year, Defensive Rookie of the Year, and Coach of the Year. He assembled a panel of 18 voters, and they offered up a single vote for each category (so effectively, every vote was a first place vote). The San Francisco 49ers ended up with some representation in the rookie categories. New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley received the most votes (12) for offensive rookie of the year, and 49ers right tackle Mike McGlinchey received one vote. Indianapolis Colts linebacker Darius Leonard received the most votes (8) for defensive rookie of the year, and 49ers linebacker Fred Warner received one vote.McGlinchey has been a consistent force in run blocking, and has steadily improved as a pass blocker. You really could not ask for a much better rookie season from a top ten pick. He is all but assured of making the all-rookie team, and while linemen don’t win rookie of the year awards, he’s proving as good as most of the rookie class. It’s interesting to note that McGlinchey is second only to Baker Mayfield in Pro Football Focus’ latest rookie rankings. Mayfield has slipped these past few weeks, and currently ranks only one spot ahead of McGlinchey in their weekly rankings. That being said , barring a huge finish by Baker Mayfield or one of the other quarterbacks, Barkley would seem to be the favorite. Phillip Lindsey has 72 more rushing yards (and a better ypc), but Barkley actually leads all rookies in receiving yards (ALL rookies, not just running backs). If Barkley keeps it up, he’s taking home the award.Fred Warner has quietly chugged along as the 49ers Mike linebacker. He is fifth in the league in tackles, and PFF ranks him eighth among all linebackers in run stop percentage. It’s not shocking however that Leonard tops the polling. He leads the NFL in tackles, and is second among rookies with four sacks. Basic counting stats don’t tell the whole picture, but this will likely stand out for media voters.PFF has Detroit Lions defensive tackle Da’Shawn Hand at the top of their rankings, followed by Cincinnati Bengals safety Jessie Bates, Los Angeles Chargers safety Derwin James, and then Leonard. Warner gets no mention, as his grade is in the middle of the pack for linebackers. If Leonard maintains his pace, he will take home defensive rookie of the year. Warner won’t take home the award, but he stands a good chance of earning an all-rookie award as well.Juice Check: Week 5 vs. Cardinals When injuries mount, football guys say “Next Man Up.” For San Francisco 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk, the Arizona Cardinals game was more like “Last Man Standing.” Besides Jerick McKinnon and Jimmy Garoppolo’s season-ending injuries, Marquise Goodwin and Dante Pettis were injured-inactive, Matt Breida had to leave after 13 snaps Cheap Ahkello Witherspoon Jersey , and backup RB Raheem Mostert came down with a bad case of fumbleitis. That skill-player-deprived offense then had to play 98 snaps, the most for any NFL team in five years, due to the deadly combination of a strong running game and five turnovers. It was an offensive treadmill that never lead anywhere, like one of those dreams where you run and run forever and never get away from the monster (who is Chandler Jones, in this case). The result was a huge game for Juice, who played 68 snaps — a whole game’s worth most weeks, but only 70% of the Niner’s offensive marathon this time. He was targeted seven times, catching six for 75 yards, and even had an ultra-rare run for 12 yards. To top it all off, he shed a blocker and tackled Tre Boston after that safety intercepted a pass. He’ll be at least as needed Monday night against Green Bay, since four key skill players missed practice Friday due to injury: Matt Brieda, Pierre Gar莽on, Dante Pettis, and Trent Taylor (plus McKinnon of course). Star TE Kittle and 3/5 of the offensive line were limited in practice. At this rate, Juszczyk will be the leading receiver AND rusher. To be fair, the versatile FB was clearly a big part of Kyle Shanahan’s screen-heavy opening script, long before the in-game injuries and turnovers changed the tenor of the game. Twice on the first drive, he made an initial feint at a pass protection block , then turned around for a screen — and a big gain. The first play gained 16 yards.Better yet, Shanahancame right back 3 plays later with the exact same play — for 26 yards down to the two-yard line.I’m always amazed at how Shanahan finds a way in every single game to show formations not previously seen during the season. Last Sunday, Juszczyk generally lined up alongside the QB, not behind the tackle as before but in between the tackle and guard, on either side. He also ran a couple of plays where the FB lined up on the right wing or wide right, and then motioned back into I-formation. That’s a new one.Let’s not forget the excellent blocking job that Juszczyk continues to do in the running game. He’s a key reason for these long runs that Breida keeps breaking off, as Juice excels in getting to the second level defender, and Breida has excellent timing to hit the hole his FB just created at the perfect time. A lot of RBs do that on the line — that’s their job — but Juice and Breida are great at doing it a bit further downfield or running outside. On Breida’s first big run, a 17-yard pickup, watch how Juszczyk submarines defensive end Chandler Jones (55) keeping the speedy running back inches away from the DE’s grasp. With the offensive line starting to show run-game dominance, the fullback running a little and Breida working on his receiving, it’s tempting to dream of a healthy Niners squad running a 3-back formation with, say, McKinnon, Breida and Juszczyk — any of whom could run or go deep. Does a defense stay in base, leaving potentially 3 linebackers covering these potential receivers? Or go nickel, and face two explosive runners with a lead fullback? That’s a tough choice. I’d love to see them have to make it.
  10. The NFL wrapped up Week 7 on Monday 49ers Mike Person Jersey , with the Atlanta Falcons holding off the New York Giants by a final score of 23-20. The Falcons improve to 3-4, and sit 2.5 game back of the New Orleans Saints in the NFC South, and 1.5 games back of the Carolina Panthers for the top wild card spot. Injuries have been a big problem for the Falcons, but they are not entirely out of this thing yet.The close of the week means it’s time for weekly NFL power rankings. As we prepare for Week 8, the San Francisco 49ers are hanging out at the bottom of the rankings one sport behind the Arizona Cardinals, and ahead of the New York Giants and Oakland Raiders. The 49ers face those three teams the next three weeks, and while they could very well win all three games, they won’t be climbing super high in the rankings. These are the three most winnable games on their schedule , and while wins would hurt their drive for the No. 1 overall pick, it’d be nice to see them not embarrass themselves — especially with two of the games on national TV.While the Raiders did not play this past week, I decided to drop them to the bottom following the Amari Cooper trade. The Raiders might win some games the rest of the way, but the next seven days leading up to the trade deadline are going to be interesting to follow with them. The Houston Texans are the biggest climber for me this week. They have now won four straight, capped by going into Jacksonville and thumping the Jaguars. I still am not sure what to make of Houston. They host Miami this Thursday in a game that probably won’t tell us a whole lot, but is very winnable for them. The top of the rankings remain the same, with no changes in the top four and all but one in the top ten remaining in there in some form or fashion. Washington joins the top ten after a big home divisional win over the Dallas Cowboys. Washington holds a 1.5 game lead over Dallas and Philadelphia in the NFC East. The Cowboys added Amari Cooper in a Monday trade, so we’ll see if that gives them a boost following their bye.On to the power rankings!Week 8 NFL power rankingsRankTeamLWRankTeamLW The San Francisco 49ers wrapped up the 2018 season and they have begun their work to prepare for 2019 free agency and the NFL draft. The coaches and scouts are back from a week in Mobile 49ers Richard Sherman Jersey , Alabama at the Senior Bowl, but there is plenty more to be done as they get ready to build on a disappointing 2018 campaign. We’ll be breaking down plenty of what that means, but in the meantime, we wanted to take a look back at the season that was for the 49ers.Jimmy Garoppolo’s injury sent things south, but there is plenty still to assess. We are going to take a look at every notable addition and provide a forum for grading how that signing, trade, or draft pick worked out.D.J. Reed, defensive backHow acquired: Drafted in the fifth round (142nd overall)The 49ers invested quite a bit in the secondary last offseason Cheap Dante Pettis Jersey , and D.J. Reed emerged as one of the more intriguing options. It took injuries to get him into the starting lineup, but once there, he impressed as a versatile option.Reed opened the season as a special teams player, returning kicks and getting some work in at a variety of other special teams roles. In Week 3, Adrian Colbert hurt his hip and Reed took over at free safety for that game and through Weeks 4 and 5. Colbert returned in Week 6, but then suffered a high ankle sprain in Week 7 and went on injured reserve.Jimmie Ward moved from cornerback to free safety after Colbert went on IR, but after three weeks, Ward got hurt and ended up on IR himself. There was a lot of back-and-forth as the 49ers went through eight different safety combinations. Reed got some free safety work over the back half of the season 49ers Alfred Morris Jersey , but spent the majority of his defensive snaps as the nickel back. K’Waun Williams suffered a knee injury and that gave Reed a chance at his more natural slot corner role.Reed did not secure consistent playing time the entire season, but he got a chance to show his versatility. The 49ers have cap space and draft picks to further invest in the secondary, but Reed would seem to have secured a chance to compete for a significant role. He could eventually replace Williams, but in the meantime, he has a chance to develop into a super-sub role — not too shabby for a fifth round pick.If you can’t see the poll below, click here.
  11. The NFL’s trade deadline is 4 p.m. ET on October 30 Womens Landon Collins Jersey , but the Dallas Cowboys made a move Mondsay for wide receiver help. First reported by ESPN’s Josina Anderson, the Cowboys traded for Oakland Raiders wide receiver Amari Cooper for the cost of a 2019 first-round pick. The costSo, first: that’s a lot to give up for Amari Cooper. Cooper started his career with two-straight 1,000-yard seasons, but struggled last year and has yet to inspire in 2018. Charles Robinson of Yahoo reported the Cowboys were basically bidding against themselves by offering a pick that high — though he also reported Dallas was likely to use that pick on a wide receiver in the draft anyway. Cooper has a year and a half left on his contract — the rest of this season that won’t cost the Cowboys much and a fifth-year option in 2019 that will cost $13.9 million, which is currently the 13th-highest cap hit for a wide receiver in 2019 between DeAndre Hopkins and Julio Jones. The fitDallas needed an upgrade at wide receiver and Cooper can certainly be that. The question will be about his usage. Cooper has been a receiver that performs better out of the slot — last year he had the 14th biggest difference between Football Outsiders’ DVOA out of the slot and outside. Of course, Cole Beasley is currently Dallas’s slot receiver and even Allen Hurns has been better out of the slot in his career — so now the Cowboys have three receivers who play better inside than out. What is known is the Cowboys needed some help at outside. After taking the entire offseason talking about how there wasn’t a need for a true No. 1 receiver, they haven’t been able to figure out a useful rotation of receivers at all. There are not many quarterbacks who have been asked to do more with less than Dak Prescott. Per Next Gen Stats, only Josh Rosen has a lower expected completion percentage this season than Prescott. The falloutThe Cowboys do have an extra week to figure everything out — they’re on a bye in Week 8. Cooper’s Dallas debut will come in Week 9 on Monday Night Football against the Tennessee Titans.Dallas will make this move in an attempt to get back into a NFC East race that doesn’t have a dominant team at the front. Per Football Outsiders Womens Curtis Riley Jersey , the Cowboys had a 22.5 percent chance at a division title after Sunday, which was the second-best shot. This is a short-term move that does have some long-term consequences. The Cowboys will eventually have to make a decision on what to do with Cooper’s contract, whether they rework it before 2019 or not. Also, this lends itself to a decision around defensive end Demarcus Lawrence, who is already playing 2018 on the franchise tag. Cooper’s contract now takes up over $13 million that wasn’t on the books before and Dallas cannot simply replace Lawrence with a first-round pick if they let their top edge rusher walk in free agency. Rookie cornerback Grant Haley could not have picked a better time to be elevated from the practice squad to the New York Giants' roster. The Giants (1-5) are heading to Atlanta to play the Falcons (2-4) on Monday night. It's home for Haley and he is going to see the women who inspires him — his mother, Dr. Carla Neal-Haley. She is a pediatrician, an internist and a battler. For the past five or six years, Neal-Haley has been fighting a rare liver disease, primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). It damages the bile ducts and causes the liver to deteriorate over time. There is no cure. She needs a new liver."We've been working on that Womens Jon Halapio Jersey , finding different donors, having people tested," Haley said Thursday before going out to practice. "It's been important to me to reach out and use my social media presence to help in any way possible. She has been my biggest supporter and there for everything I have been through. For me as a son, it's only right for me to do the same."Neal-Haley had open heart surgery in January and her condition now makes her eligible to get a new liver. There is a Facebook page aimed at finding a donor (@liverforcarla).Haley said his mother still goes to work every day, although one of her new jobs is finding tickets for Monday night. The family needs about 10 and probably more for friends. If active, the game will be his NFL debut."With the family there, this is special," said Haley, who also has a younger brother and sister. "My mom , she is excited. She is looking for tickets. She has been loving and supporting. Now for a moment like this, it's special for her, everything she is going through. I am in a blessed position and I can't be more thankful for the opportunity."Haley, whose father, Leon Jr., is a dean at the University of Florida College of Medicine in Jacksonville, has overcome some adversity to get into this position. He was not drafted and signed with the Giants as a free agent. He had a good training camp and was in the final cuts. The Giants immediately added him to the practice squad, where the minimum salary was $7,600 weekly. He will make more than $28 Womens Riley Dixon Jersey ,000 weekly on the 53-man roster.Being on the 10-man practice squad was an adjustment after training camp."I looked at the situation and you get to go against Odell (Beckham Jr.) and Shep (Sterling Shepard) every day, why not take advantage of that and continue to grow your skillset?" Haley said. "Once I did that, then it started being fun out there and normal. I'm glad I used that as a growing experience to be ready when my number was called."Haley was at MetLife Stadium for the Giants' home games and watched the away contests on television. It admittedly was a strange feeling after starting 36 of 49 games at Penn State. All he could do was root for his teammates. He took notes though and worked hard. Now he might get a chance to go against receiver Julio Jones and quarterback Matt Ryan, guys he watched on television when he was home in Atlanta."Mom will definitely be there," Haley said.
  12. Authentic Jon Halapio Jersey , and all that is left is the game. For most of the NFL’s scouting departments, the Senior Bowl is over — or at least the important part. For the rest of us, however, the game is more valuable than usual. Due to the weather in Mobile, Wednesday’s practice was moved inside and largely closed to the media beyond a few clips of video. So, those of us who aren’t in NFL scouting departments, and therefore not inside the practice facility, only got to see two-thirds what we normally do on these prospects. Historically, the Senior Bowl has figured fairly heavily in the New York Giants draft prep. They have drafted the game’s MVP in each of the last two years (Davis Webb and Kyle Lauletta). Also, each of the Giants’ last three second-round picks — Will Hernandez, Dalvin Tomlinson, and Sterling Shepard — were considered “risers” during the week of practice. So, what happened this week? Risers Montez Sweat (EDGE, Mississippi State) - Sweat’s is a name with which Giants fans should be getting familiar. The Mississippi State edge rusher had the first big highlight of Senior Bowl week when he demolished an offensive lineman for what would have been a sack. He never really slowed down, and several have commented that he was the best prospect on the property. Sweat has the size and length the Giants covet at 6-foot-6, 252 pounds, with 35 5/8 inch arms, and shows the ability to win with speed and power. Sweat was so good that those in attendance speculated that when he got a reduced workload in Thursday’s practice, it was to give other players a chance.Isaiah Buggs (iDL, Alabama) - It is tough to stand out on Alabama’s defense, so it was important for Buggs to make the most of his time at the Senior Bowl, and thus far he has. Alabama’s “other” pass rushing defensive lineman was one of the best in attendance, and a handful for any lineman assigned to block him.Nasir Adderly (S, Delaware) - We didn’t talk about Adderly throughout the college football regular season Cheap Evan Engram Jersey , and I’ll take the L on that one. There will be plenty of scouts running back to the film room to see if they can find tape of the Delaware Fighting Blue Hens, however, as Adderly might just have worked himself into the first round. The 2019 draft has a solid group of safeties, but so far none have really separated themselves from the pack, which leaves the door open for players like Adderly to step up and make their own claims.Rock Ya-Sin (CB, Temple) - Dan Pizzuta’s guy proved himself to be one of the top cover corners in attendance, in addition to being on this year’s “All Name” team. Rock came in a bit smaller than advertised, but was plenty athletic and had some great battles with South Carolina’s Deebo Samuel. Deebo Samuel (WR, South Carolina) - Samuel himself was one of the winners from the week of practice. He was one of the most highly regarded players coming in to this week, and he showed why. Samuel measured in at under 6-foot (which was expected), but he has a powerful frame as well as plenty of quickness and speed. Andy Isabella (WR, UMass) - Another one of Dan’s guys. Isabella had some issues separating from press coverage, but showed very quick feet and agility. Isabella rarely faced press coverage in college and is likely destined to be a slot receiver in the NFL. He was a huge part of UMass’ offense and is showing that he could be a very productive receiver in the NFL.Penny Hart (WR, Georgia State) - The 5-foot 8 inch Hart was one of the surprises of the week. Nobody was expecting much from the little receiver from Georgia State, but he showed out in practice. While his size means a smaller than ideal catch radius, he is also too quick for most corners to stay with in tight coverage, which is an advantage all its own.Terry McLaurin (WR, Ohio State) - Sometimes it happens that players just fall through the cracks when we talk about prospects during the season. That’s what happened here. Unlike with Adderly, Hart, or Udoh, McLaurin played at a powerhouse school, but was simply overshadowed by bigger names. Out from under the shadow of the Ohio State defense, Dwayne Haskins, and Paris Campbell , McLaurin showed that he is a playmaker as well. He Had one of the best weeks of anyone in practice and teams could covet his speed at the next level.Olisaemeka Udoh (OT, Elon) - Oli Udoh got his invite to the Senior Bowl after an eyebrow raising performance at the East-West Shrine Game. Udoh adapted well to the jump in competition and had several good reps against the talented edge rushers in attendance. Udoh has the measurements to catch Dave Gettleman’s eye and doing good work at right tackle is a plus as well. Given the (severe) shortage of capable offensive linemen in the NFL, it might be a bit much to hope that Udoh slips in the draft, but his should be another name to watch over the coming months.Dru Samia (OG, Oklahoma) - It shouldn’t be surprising that a player who started 48 games for the Sooners had himself a good showing at the Senior Bowl. Samia started off on the right foot by weighing in at above 300 pounds, which was important for those wondering whether or not his 295-pound (listed) playing weight at Oklahoma would be big enough for the pros. The right guard showed the same mobility and anchor ability he did in college, and should be a player the Giants pay attention to if they want to move in another direction at right guard.Fallers Donald Parham (TE, Stetson) - It isn’t exactly fair to say that Parham is a “faller,” but for a little-known player from Stetson University, every opportunity to show off in front of NFL talent evaluators is gold. Parham had to withdraw from the Senior Bowl due to an injury, and missing the final practice and the game could cost him. His size — measuring 6-foot 8, 245 pounds, with a 7-foot wingspan and 10 1鈦? inch hands — are sure to get GMs attention. But even so, it would be better for him to get tape out there winning against top competition.Daniel Jones, Drew Lock, Will Grier - Everyone wanted one of these young men to step up and give the NFL a good reason to look at them as legitimate first round quarterbacks. Each of them flashed the upside that had various evaluators and scouts considering them for Top 15 grades, but none of them were able to show it on a consistent basis. So while each of those quarterbacks had reps on which people who came in to the week looking for confirmation could hang their hats, they also had reps that would (or should) give teams pause. If we consider Dwayne Haskins and Kyler Murray the top two quarterbacks, none of the upperclassmen contenders have stepped forward to lay claim the title of “QB3” (or two, if a team is so beholden to their thresholds that Murray is off their board). The powerhouse that Bill Parcells and George Young were building was almost ready to break into that exclusive club.Almost.But before we dive into the Giants’ 17-3 victory and all that it meant, consider this: Giants Stadium opened in 1976.It would take nine years before it finally hosted a playoff game. The last time the Giants had played a postseason home game was 1962. And they had lost five times to Montana and Co. in five seasons entering the ‘85 postseason, including twice in the playoffs. So hosting the defending-champion 49ers in the Meadowlands was a big deal. And then the oddmakers went and did the Giants a big favor: They christened San Francisco as three-point favorites, despite playing on the road and both teams’ identical 10-6 records. It was Montana who suffered the brunt of the Giants’ anger. They sacked him four times (Jim Burt twice, Leonard Marshall once, Lawrence Taylor once) and harassed him all game. Montana’s receivers dropped nine passes by The New York Times’ count, “many as a result of 鈥?hammering or prospective hammering,” as the Old Gray Lady put it.The 49ers failed to score a touchdown for the first time in 40 games. He continued his evolution into a Pro Bowl quarterback, passing for both Giants’ touchdowns. Mark Bavaro stretched out to haul in an 18-yard scoring pass in the second quarter, and Don Hasselbeck caught a 3-yard touchdown in the third. Meanwhile, Joe Morris was emerging as an elite back. He capped a 1,336-yard, 21-touchdown regular season with 141 rushing yards on 28 carries. The Giants won by two scores despite missing three field goals — from 43, 36 and 39 yards.Their season may have ended the next week at a frigid Soldier Field, when the Bears’ all-time defense dominated the Giants, 21-0, on their way to the Super Bowl. But the progress was undeniable.Parcells seemed to predict what was coming. After the victory over the 49ers, he presciently cautioned that it was only part of something bigger to come. They wouldn’t be the last team standing, not in 1985. But it was coming.
  13. Bryant have been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Washington Redskins after both missed practice for the third straight day.Coach Dan Quinn said Friday that rookie Isaiah Oliver will take Alford's spot. With Bryant hobbled by a sore hamstring since kicking a 57-yard field goal against Tampa Bay Josh Norman Jersey , Tavecchio kicked three field goals against New York. He sealed the outcome with a 56-yarder in the closing minutes. The Falcons (3-4) hope that receiver Mohammed Sanu will be active against the Redskins (5-2). 14. to have another big-time player in his arsenal moving forward.Speedy wide receiver Curtis Samuel White Brandon Scherff Jersey , the team's second-round draft pick in 2017, returned to action Sunday after missing the first three games due to a minor heart procedure and made an immediate impact in the team's 33-31 win over the New York Giants .Samuel scored on a 25-yard catch-and-run reception in the first quarter in which he broke three tackles , and also had a key strip on a muffed Giants punt return as a gunner that resulted in a Carolina recovery in the end zone for touchdown ."He's always been a key asset for us since day one," Newton said of Samuel. "He may not understand his threshold of greatness. Today you saw it. A guy who is very slippery when he gets the ball, resilient when he's running, and shows you the capabilities that he has."Samuel's rookie season with Carolina was marred by injuries. He missed time in training camp with a hamstring injury and later, just as he was beginning to contribute on offense and special teams, broke his ankle causing him to miss the final seven games, including the team's playoff game against New Orleans. He gives the Panthers another deep threat along with rookie D.J. Moore."We have to get the ball in his hands as much as possible," Newton said of Samuel.Samuel agrees."When I touch the ball I don't feel like anybody can stop me," Samuel said. "Just getting back in the groove, going back to what I was doing in college (at Ohio State), I feel like it's similar to me. My skillset hasn't changed White Preston Smith Jersey , I can do all those types of things. I just got to show it at this level."Next week the Panthers will get back a big-time player on defense when outside linebacker Thomas Davis returns from a four-game suspension following a positive test for PEDs.Things we learned from the Panthers' 33-31 win over the Giants:MANNING CAN STILL DO ITThe Giants didn't win, but the much-maligned Eli Manning showed he can still perform in the clutch. Manning nearly had comeback win No. 36, putting the Giants up 31-30 with 1:08 to play on a 15-yard scoring strike to Saquon Barkley. That capped a four-play, 75-yard touchdown drive in which he completed all four pass attempts. "I did not need that drive to know about the magic of Eli Manning," Barkley said. "I knew about Eli before I got here, the way he worked, the way he played, how great he is as a leader, how smart he is."ADAMS CAN PLAY TOOWith so many eyes on Eric Reid's Panthers debut , it was team's other safety, 37-year-old safety Mike Adams, who picked off the 37-year-old Manning on consecutive plays in the second half. Panthers coach Ron Rivera called Adams a veteran guy who is a "calming, steadying force out there." Carolina's defense will have a challenge next week in Washington. Redskins quarterback Alex Smith entered this week's Monday night matchup with New Orleans with only one interception and four touchdowns.BECKHAM THROWS TDStrangely enough , Beckham got into the touchdown column with his arm before he did with his hands in 2018. After some controversial comments earlier in the week, Beckham ignited the Giants offense at just the right time by taking lateral from Manning on the left and heaving the ball to Barkley, who'd broken free on the right sideline. The 57-yard score was the longest pass play of the game. "It was a big lift, particularly when you're in a tight game and you have something good that happens," Giants coach Pat Shurmur said. "It jump-starts your team and emotions."RUNNING BARKLEYShurmur's plan to get Barkley more involved on the ground didn't produce the same type of spark, though. Barkley finished with more receiving yards (81) than rushing (48) and scored twice through the air. He was repeatedly corralled behind the line of scrimmage for negative yards, starting the game with five carries for minus-4 yards.GANO'S HISTORIC KICKThe NFL hasn't seen a 63-yard game-winning field goal like Graham Gano's since Nov. 8, 1970, when the Saints' Tom Dempsey hit what was then the longest field goal in league history to down the Lions 19-17. It was tied for the second-longest field goal in NFL history, second only behind Matt Prater, who converted a 64-yarder against Tennessee on Dec. 8, 2013.CAM ON THE RUNCarolina's running game wasn't as productive as it has been in the previous three games, held to 118 yards rushing 鈥?below the Panthers' season average of 166. A big reason is the Giants held quarterback Cam Newton to 29 yards on eight carries. Carolina will be tested coming up White Quinton Dunbar Jersey , facing two top-five rushing defenses in the Eagles and Redskins. While Newton didn't have a huge game on the ground, he did come up with a huge pancake block on Giants defensive end Kareem Martin. Said Panthers coach Ron Rivera: "He is going to lay it out on the line and he is going to help this football team in any capacity he can."AP stringer Eli Pacheco contributed to this report. 15. Steelers drama is great for business if you work in the world of sports media Black Artie Burns Jersey , it would also be fair to say that some reporters enjoy it a little bit more than most. For those who make their money from the hot take market, the Steelers turmoil with Antonio Brown has been a gift. Regardless of their agenda, there is something for everyone in this fiasco. For the Mike Tomlin does not have his team buttoned up crowd, this latest drama fits their narrative perfectly. Those who think Ben Roethlisberger is a terrible leader and teammate have heard more than enough to be able to point the finger of blame his way. And for the AB can do no wrong collective, it is anyone’s fault but Brown’s. When speaking to Peter King during a podcast interview released on Thursday, a man who has done his utmost to interject himself into the Steelers saga with Brown as of late, Aditi Kinkhabwala of the NFL Network took the blame game to a whole new level when she suggested that Steelers president Art Rooney II was actually the man who deserved much of the cristcm for the team’s problems.Citing an unnamed source high up in the organization, Kinkhabwala also indicated there was a least one member of senior management who had issues with Rooney’s leadership. In an interview that would last about 20 minutes, Kinkhabwala would go on to note a lack of leadership in the locker room Black Joe Haden Jersey , question the actions of Roethlisberger and list a number of Brown’s offield issues. Ultimately highlighting a fractured locker room split by an apparent power struggle between quarterback and receiver. Strangely, while Kinkhabwala was more than willing to call out most of the organization, Brown was one of the few that eventually had her sympathy. For many observers, the idea that a 30-year-old man is not responsible for his own actions is absurd and there will be a lot of fans who will struggle with the idea of seeing Brown as a victim. I’m starting to hate this team for the lack of passion Pittsburgh Steelers T-Shirt , discipline and imagination. I wanted to turn this game off and watch HGTV with my wife instead.Grading games is an extremely difficult and somewhat thankless task. While the coaches’ grades, of course, are what count the most Pittsburgh Steelers Hats , the media and fans can’t help but evaluate as well. So let’s take a look at BTSC’s early perceptions: OffenseThe Steelers scored only one touchdown, a pretty one from Ben to Antonio Brown. But on the two other scoring drives, the play calling was unimaginative and ineffective. Ben who looked like he was on his way to another epic day Pittsburgh Steelers Hoodie , collapsed in the second half. He was terrible and looked defeated down the stretch. But so was the running game. 19 yards on the ground is inconceivable. The offense failed.Overall Offense Grade: F Custom Tennessee Titans Jerseys
  17. San Francisco 49ers T-Shirt , “absolutely on track” The San Francisco 49ers 2018 season has fallen to nothing short of disaster and disappointment. 2017 was a rebuild that appeared accelerated with the arrival of Jimmy Garoppolo. Before everything began, many thought this was a Wild Card team. Now the 49ers are in the running for the first pick of the 2019 NFL draft. All disappointment considered, Adam Schefter still thinks the 49ers rebuild is going just as scheduled. The ESPN insider was on KNBR’s Murph and Mac and had this to say regarding the team: Schefter also later pointed out that the 49ers did their due diligence on Josh Gordon (whom he reminded Kyle Shanahan worked with while offensive coordinator with the Cleveland Browns) and also Khalil Mack (whom Schefter called the 49ers a finalist for). The entire interview is worth a listen (it’s roughly 10 minutes) and if nothing else, has a voice of reason for 49ers fans. When Jerick McKinnon tore his ACL in the final practice of training camp San Francisco 49ers Hats , it was a omen of things to come. A few weeks later, Jimmy Garoppolo followed in the same injury and now the 49ers have an injury report longer than the classic novel War and Peace. Many were optimism for a playoff appearance, but no one could have predicted this skid of one win to their name. Some are wondering with the recent losses if John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan are doing all they can to help this team. If anyone can give an unbiased opinion of everything, it’s Schefter. The 49ers were rebuilding no matter how this season goes and as far as improving on the win total from last year San Francisco 49ers Hoodie , the team has just hit a fountain of bad luck. The 49ers announced their plan to waive linebacker Reuben Foster on Sunday morning after Foster was arrested at the team’s hotel in Tampa on a domestic violence charge. It was a change from the way they handled Foster’s offseason domestic violence arrest. Foster stayed away from the team, but remained on the roster as the process played out and rejoined the team after his accuser — the same woman from the more recent incident — recanted her allegation.49ers General Manager John Lynch said Foster “not living up to what we have communicated” was the reason for the different reaction this time and called it “disappointing.” Cornerback Richard Sherman used the same word after the game while also saying that he wishes the best for Foster and understands the team’s decision.“It’s what they had to do,” Sherman said, via NBC Bay Area. “I think the organization has handled the situation as best they could. Obviously been patient and deliberate and understanding of who Reuben is and what kind of heart he has. But it’s a really compromising situation for the team Cheap Customized San Francisco 49ers Jerseys , repeatedly. So, you understand the decision the organization has to make, after repeated offenses.”Sherman said “you never want to make excuses like that” when asked if the timing of the arrest and subsequent announcement from the team contributed to their 27-9 loss to the Buccaneers. It may have had some impact, but the 49ers’ 2-9 record suggests they were going to have a hard time winning under any circumstances.
  18. The San Francisco 49ers dropped an ugly loss in Week 5 and the previously winless Arizona Cardinals are now 1-4. The 49ers dropped to 1-4 Authentic Jimmy Garoppolo Jersey , losing by a final score of 28-12. And drop really is the key phrase given how badly the 49ers receivers looked trying to catch the ball. This was a decidedly ugly game, and win or lose, it was going to tell us something about the 49ers. They are just not a good football team right now. They can make things happen, and can do some very impressive things, but more often than not they are screwing up. It is either bad tackling, or dropped passes, or penalties, or some shaky play-calling, or otherwise poor execution.C.J. Beathard’s performance was a mix of everything on Sunday. He made some big plays Authentic Kyle Juszczyk Jersey , but he was twice stripped of the ball. His pocket awareness is not so good, and it is leading to bad things. At the same time, when he was executing on his throws, he was not helped by his receivers. They regularly dropped big passes that cost the team chances to convert and move down the field. Drops and three lost turnovers put the 49ers in a bad position most of the day.You know it was a bad day when Robbie Gould had a rough outing. The 49ers scored a touchdown on their opening drive and Gould missed a field goal. The hold looked OK, but something wasn’t right and Gould didn’t attempt to kick. Later in the game, trailing 14-6, Gould missed a 45-yard attempt. Who knows what happens late in the game if those four points are converted, but things finish a little different. That being said, even with a win this was a statement as to the 49ers problems. The Cardinals entered the game as the last remaining winless team. Their defense was pretty solid coming in , and Josh Rosen is an upgrade over Sam Bradford, but they are still not a particularly good team. They showed it in this game, with the 49ers out-gaining them by a sizable margin. And yet, the 49ers were trailing most of the day and never seemed like they were getting enough done.It was also a rough day on the injury report. They didn’t lose nearly as many players as they have the past few weeks, but there was a big one. Running back Matt Breida suffered an ankle injury in the second quarter. He left to get his ankles taped, but then was sent to the locker room. He was ruled out early in the third quarter. His status for Week 6 is up in the air.Up Next: @ Green Bay Packers, Monday Night FootballThe 49ers have their first prime time game of the season when they travel to Lambeau Field to face the Green Bay Packers. The Packers lost 31-23 to the Detroit Lions in a game they trailed nearly wire-to-wire. They pushed back with a pair of third quarter scores, but the defense couldn’t get a needed stop early in the fourth quarter. The story of the game was Mason Crosby missing four field goals and an extra point on the day. Green Bay dropped to 2-2-1 with the loss. Saturday is the last full practice of the San Francisco 49ers before they take on the New York Giants in their game on Monday Night Football. The final injury report will be available momentarily and Kyle Shanahan will be set to take the podium for some details but the beat writers are reporting on what the inactives are. Safety Jaquiski Tartt, wide receiver Pierre Gar莽on White Ahkello Witherspoon Jersey , and linebacker Reuben Foster are all listed as out for the 49ers Monday night game. All three of these players had been sitting out practices so the news shouldn’t be too surprising that they wouldn’t be good to go Monday Night. Reuben Foster was already trending in the direction of being out as the week went on. Additionally, tight end George Kittle looks ready to go Monday Night. Kyle Shanahan will be having his press conference with the media shortly, so we can get some more details from there. 49ers Saturday practice participation reportDNP: LB Reuben Foster (hamstring), WR Pierre Garcon (knee), S Jaquiski Tartt (shoulder)Limited: TE George Kittle (chest)Full participants: TE Garrett Celek (not injury related), G Joshua Garnett (thumb), C Weston Richburg (knee), T Joe Staley (not injury related)
  19. ... that would change things dramatically’ The San Francisco 49ers wrapped up their week of practice on Friday Authentic K'Waun Williams Jersey , and head coach Kyle Shanahan had a brief press conference after. He talked about injuries and C.J. Beathard’s practice week, but I liked hearing some of his thoughts on the 49ers struggles even without the loss of Jimmy Garoppolo.Shanahan is pleased with the run game, but thinks the team needs to find ways to improve on third down, both offensively and defensively. The 49ers are already a big step behind the eight ball without Jimmy Garoppolo, so the run game will be that much more critical. Matt Breida and Alfred Morris are both questionable. Both seem to be looking OK in practice, although Breida appears to be a bit more of a game-time decision than Morris. Regardless, the 49ers badly need their run game in gear to clean up this third down problem. They need strong showings in the early downs to set up more 3rd and manageable situations. C.J. Beathard is more of a dink and dunk guy than Garoppolo, so getting to 3rd and short is critical. On the other side of the ball, giving up conversions on 3rd and 15 (or setting up 4th and 1s) are not going to help anybody. The 49ers defense was atrocious in the first half against the Chiefs in general, but particularly on third down. Nobody (other than the Rams) has an offense quite like the Chiefs, but the Chargers are dynamic enough to be concerning. It is critical the 49ers defense finds some third down success. Here’s Shanahan’s full transcript from Friday.Do you have any clarity on how your defensive backfield is going to look on Sunday?“Yes. [G Joshua] Garnett’s out. [CB Richard Sherman] Sherm’s out. [S Jaquiski] Tartt’s doubtful. [RB Matt] Breida, [RB] Alfred [Morris] and [DB Adrian] Colbert, all three will be questionable.”Will you go with DB Antone Exum Jr. again as Tartt’s replacement?“Most likely.”With Breida, what is the remaining hurdle for him?“Just to see how he feels on game day. He’s been up and down a little bit this week. He got a little bit more yesterday. We kept him limited today just trying to manage the wear and tear. But Authentic Jimmy Garoppolo Jersey , questionable is better than doubtful so hoping it works out.”QB C.J. Beathard spent the offseason with TE George Kittle and WR Trent Taylor working out together in Tennessee working on the offense. Was it obvious when they got back that they had been working on it? Were they sharper in obvious ways to you when they returned?“I think they were pretty similar. Those guys are close. Two of them went to college together and I think they’re all from close to that area and I think they all like country music. So, it’s a good place for them to go hang out. But, all three of those guys work year-round. They’ve been great since the day they’ve gotten here. But, yes, they all did come back better. I don’t know if it was because they were together or just because that’s expected in year two, also.”With the increased reps, I know you talked about C.J. should be more comfortable in year two. Were you able to see that this week in practice?“Yeah. We’ve seen it since OTAs. Just going against our defense every day, I think he’s got a real good feel for that and a real good feel for our offense. He stepped in this week and had a hell of a week of practice.”What makes it a good week of practice?“Just going to the right people, staying in a good rhythm, going through his progressions, making the right reads, getting the ball to, you can always see after a play based off the play call and the coverages that you’re going against where the ball should go. How many times do they get it there? He’s been very consistent with that.”There’s so much focus on the quarterback this week and can Beathard salvage the season and all that. But, as you look at the team overall Authentic Kyle Juszczyk Jersey , do you feel like it’s not just on C.J., a lot of areas need to improve for you guys to kind of have a chance here?“Yes, no doubt. I think offensively we’ve been running the ball well. I think we need to get a lot better on third down. We’ve struggled to do well on drives, to me, when we’ve had a lot of third downs because we haven’t been very consistent with that. We’ve done better in short yardage, just not better in the longer yardages. I think we’ve been in a lot of long third downs too which means you’ve got to get better with some penalties, taking some sacks. Then we’ve got to do better at converting. Defensively, we’ve talked about it. We need to get better at tackling, first and foremost, and do better at third down on defense also. I think both sides of the ball, first thing, if we could get off the field on third down on defense and we could stay on the field on offense on third down I think that would change a lot of things dramatically.”You talked last year that you were done checking on LB Reuben Foster on the field. He tricked you again.“I know. I tried so hard not to go. I also, so no one ever takes it wrong, I don’t plan on going out there every time a player is down. They don’t need to see me. I’m not going to make them feel better. Doctors are around trying to do their job and everyone is around anyways. I don’t think it helps for me to just get in there and stare at someone. So , I try not to go out there unless there’s something real serious and then you’re just concerned and you want to go check on the guy. But, Reuben’s gotten me like one out of 30 times I’ve been right. So, I’ll try to hold back longer next time.”What was the feeling on how Exum did on his time last week and how do you feel about him if he’s the guy on Sunday this week?“I mean, Exum’s here for a reason. I thought he got a lot better as the game went. I think he made some mistakes early in the game and I think once he played a little bit more I think it slowed down for him. From a physical standpoint, I thought he played fairly well just running. I thought he tackled fairly well. I thought he did good jobs in his coverage. I think it took him a little bit for the game to calm down for him as it did for a lot of our defense in the first half. But, I was definitely happy with how he finished.” Do you have any idea what to expect playing in a soccer stadium and potentially having a large contingency of 49ers fans there?“I don’t know. I’m actually very curious about it. I don’t think I’ve played in a situation like this. Hopefully it won’t be as loud as it was last week in Kansas City. If it is, we’ll have to deal with it.” You didn’t mention OL Mike Person on the injury report. Is he back to normal?“It depends on what you consider normal, but he’s good to go.”Live updates from Kyle Shanahan’s Week 4 Monday wrap-up press conference The San Francisco 49ers lost in Week 4 to the Los Angeles Chargers in C.J. Beathard’s first start of the season. It was a close loss, with Beathard putting up a strong effort, and the defense making some big stops amidst still inconsistent tackling. 20. be picking up In-season moves are just as important to winning in fantasy football as the initial draft. There’s always more you can do to improve your roster Customized New York Giants Jerseys , so of course the waiver wire is always a busy place at the start of each week. Early in the season, there’s a lot of potential help that went undrafted and can help change a fantasy season. The players below are available in fewer than half of Yahoo/ESPN leagues, though I’ll try to keep those percentages a little lower for most players. I’ll also try to not repeat players, but if anyone from last week’s list — especially Will Dissly, Phillip Lindsey, or Geronimo Allison — are still available, grab them too.John Brown, WR, Baltimore RavensRostered - Yahoo: 26 percent | ESPN: 24.1 percentA healthy John Brown is really good and it looks like John Brown is healthy. Brown is only tied for second on the Ravens in targets (14) with Willie Snead, behind Michael Crabtree (16), but he’s the clear big play threat on the offense. He’s been the target on 35.8 percent on the team’s intended air yards, per Next Gen Stats, which is 15th among wide receivers. While Brown is the big play threat in an offense that’s now more willing to go down the field, Brown is also the top red zone target so far. Through two games Brown has been the intended target on four of Joe Flacco’s 13 red zone passes (30.8 percent) while no other Raven has more than two targets. There’s no reason for Brown to be rostered in just over a quarter of leagues.Ricky Seals-Jones, TE, Arizona CardinalsRostered - Yahoo: 27 percent | ESPN: 13.5 percentThere’s not a lot to like about the Arizona Cardinals offense right now. The coaching staff doesn’t even really seem to know what’s going on. In the same press conference on Monday, head coach Steve Wilks said the offense needed to be scaled down to be less complicated and they needed to be be more creative in getting David Johnson the ball. But Seals-Jones has been the “deep threat” in this offense. He leads the team with 23.9 percent of the team’s intended air yards, which is fifth-most among tight ends. He’s also second on the team in targets through two weeks, just behind Larry Fitzgerald. The Cardinals are likely to be in game situations when they have to pass often and while it’s a relative conservative offense right now, when they go deep, it’s to Seals-Jones. Arizona also has to run more than 47 plays per game throughout the season. He could also see an uptick in volume once Josh Rosen takes over at quarterback. Chris Godwin, WR, Tampa Bay BuccaneersRostered - Yahoo: 35 percent | ESPN: 34.1 percentThe Buccaneers offense is on fire right now, but even while that’s not going to last on this pace , there’s some good indicators for fantasy stability. One of the benefits of Todd Munkin taking over as the offensive play caller has been the ability to spread the ball around. DeSean Jackson has been getting all the deep targets and Mike Evans is still Mike Evans, but Chris Godwin has been able to play a significant role in the passing game as the No. 3.Tampa Bay hasn’t been in the red zone often — that happens when you’re scoring from 75 yards out — but Godwin is the only player on the roster with multiple red zone targets (two of Ryan Fitzpatrick’s seven passes) and they’ve both gone for touchdowns. Godwin is also getting his shots down the field, he has an aDOT of 14.1, which is second on the team behind Jackson. There’s a lot of weapons in Tampa Bay right now, but just about all of them have fantasy value.Austin Ekeler, RB, Los Angeles ChargersRostered - Yahoo: 45 percent | ESPN: 43 percentEkeler got 11 carries and 77 rushing yards in Week 2. Some of that was due to Melvin Gordon being sidelined for some of the game due to injury. But Gordon hasn’t alway been consistently healthy in his career — 2017 was the first team in Gordon’s first three seasons in which he played in all 16 games. Even if Gordon is on the field, it’s been clear the Chargers want to have a role for Ekeler. In the red zone, Ekeler has two targets, two receptions, a receiving touchdown, and two rushing attempts. That puts him only behind Gordon in red zone opportunities. Ekeler is third on the team in targets, a role that should continue as the season progresses.Chris Ivory, RB, Buffalo BillsRostered - Yahoo: 5 percent | ESPN: 3.2 percentThe Buffalo Bills offense is bad, like really really bad. But fantasy football is about opportunity and Chris Ivory might have some of that real soon. LeSean McCoy has cracked rib cartilage and will be questionable for Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings. There’s really no reason for McCoy to push to play if he’s not near 100 percent. While a meeting with the Vikings isn’t a great matchup for an opposing running back, especially for a team that’s going to be trailing often, but if the starting job is there and you’re desperate at running back already, Ivory could be worth a look. How to watch Giants vs. Cowboys: Game time, TV channels, odds, live stream, radio, more It’s game day New York Giants T-Shirt , New York Giants fans! 21. The New York Giants initial 53-man roster , one which could begin changing as soon as the waiver claiming period ends at noon on Sunday, is full of surprises. Including the fact that, for now, the Giants are keeping four quarterbacks.Let’s start with this from my Saturday afternoon Twitter mentions.Yes, umm, yes it does. Andrew Adams and Darian Thompson are out at safety. Chris Lewis-Harris, Leonard Johnson and Grant Haley are out at cornerback. Mark Herzlich, after years of seeming to hang on to his Giants career by a fingernail, is out. Roger Lewis Jr., whom we have been telling you for months was in trouble, is out. Giants roster cuts 2018: S Darian Thompson waived/injuredGiants roster cuts 2018: Linebacker Mark Herzlich reportedly releasedGiants roster cuts 2018: DL A.J. Francis among notable cutsGiants roster cuts 2018: Kalif Raymond out, Hunter Sharp likely punt returnerGiants roster cuts 2018: WR Roger Lewis, S Andrew Adams released“As I’ve said, I feel like we’re on the right track,” coach Pat Shurmur said in a statement released by the team. “We had a competitive training camp that forced us to make some tough decisions. We will continue to look to improve the roster in any way we can.“This day is never easy because you are dealing with people who have made a commitment to your program, and while we all understand the reality of the business we’re in, it doesn’t make it any easier. “When we started camp, I told the players that my hope for all of them is that if they don’t make our roster, I want them to make somebody else’s. So that’s my desire for the men we parted ways with today.”The Giants surprisingly kept all three backups for Eli Manning — Davis Webb, Kyle Lauletta and veteran Alex Tanney.Four undrafted rookies and first-year players (center Evan Brown, safety Sean Chandler, linebacker Tae Davis, and running back Robert Martin), plus defensive tackle Josh Banks, a second-year pro who was signed as a rookie free agent in 2017 and spent the entire season on injured reserve with a shoulder injury. The Giants can begin assembling a 10-man practice squad once at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, an hour after the waiver period expires.Let’s go through the full 53-man roster and offer some initial thoughts.OffenseQuarterback (4) — Eli Manning, Davis Webb, Kyle Lauletta, Alex TanneyValentine’s View: Quarterback intrigue marked the final half-hour or so before the 4 p.m. roster deadline. There had been speculation all day that the Giants might be trying to get something in exchange for Tanney. As the deadline approached, there was speculation that the Giants were working the phones trying to find a taker for one of their young quarterbacks, probably Webb.Even though Webb has been the No. 2 quarterback throughout camp, he wasn’t drafted by Shurmur and Dave Gettleman. He may also have more value than Lauletta right now because he is a second-year player. The roster will continue to evolve, and I can’t imagine that the Giants will keep four quarterbacks long-term. Something is going to give there.Running back (5) — Saquon Barkley, Wayne Gallman, Jonathan Stewart, Shane Smith, Robert MartinValentine’s View: For weeks we have been wondering if one of the Giants’ young running backs, probably former Rutgers Scarlet Knight Robert Martin, could play well enough to force the Giants to keep an additional running back. Turns out, that is exactly what happened. We had always wondered if the Giants would keep fullback Shane Smith. They did.Tight end (4) — Evan Engram, Rhett Ellison, Jerell Adams, Scott SimonsonValentine’s View: In my final 53-man roster projection I had Simonson making the cut. It makes sense purely because the Giants will be relying heavily on two-tight end sets in their offense. They are built to try to run, to try and control the clock with the run and the short passing game, then look for the home run ball. Simonson is a blocking tight end who might help them there.Wide receiver (5) — Odell Beckham Jr., Sterling Shepard, Cody Latimer , Russell Shepard, Hunter SharpValentine’s View: What happened here is precisely what we thought was going to happen. Russell Shepard made the roster because of his ability to help on special teams and as a receiver. Roger Lewis Jr., obviously not a favorite of the new Giants regime, has been cut. Hunter Sharp won the competition with Kalif Raymond to be a return man/reserve wide receiver.Offensive line (9) — Starters: Nate Solder (LT), Will Hernandez (LG), Jon Halapio (C), Patrick Omameh (RG), Ereck Flowers (RT); Reserves: John Greco, Chad Wheeler, John Jerry, C Evan BrownValentine’s View: I figured nine offensive linemen were going to make the roster. I just didn’t figure Brown, the undrafted rookie free agent center from SMU, was going to be the ninth. After the trade of Brett Jones, though, it is logical because Brown is a pure center and the veteran Greco is a guard who can play center. I still believe this is an area where the Giants could look to free agency or the waiver wire in hopes of finding a veteran swing tackle. One of these backups, probably either Brown or Greco, might not be on the roster for long.DefenseDefensive line (5) — Starters: Damon Harrison, Dalvin Tomlinson, B.J. Hill; Reserves: Kerry Wynn, Josh BanksValentine’s View: Stunning. The addition of Banks to the roster rather than veteran defensive tackles A.J. Francis and Robert Thomas, both of whom I had making the roster, is one that came out of nowhere. I figured the Giants might choose between Francis and Thomas, but not cut both. And keeping Banks, a player who drew little attention during training camp or the preseason? Not sure anyone, including Banks, saw that coming. But, hey, having a guy on the roster with the last name Banks can’t be a bad thing, right?Linebackers (9) — Starters: Alec Ogletree, B.J. Goodson, Olivier Vernon, Kareem Martin; Reserves: Lorenzo Carter, Ray-Ray Armstrong, Connor Barwin, Tae Davis, Romeo OkwaraValentine’s View: Mark Herzlich’s surprisingly long run with the Giants is over. Calvin Munson is gone after a season. Not a real shock that Okwara made the roster. Shurmur has been praising him recently, and with Vernon’s status uncertain due to his ankle injury, Okwara could give them some pass rush presence. Davis played well in the preseason finale against the New England Patriots, but his addition to the roster is another of Saturday’s many surprises.Cornerbacks (4) — Starters: Janoris Jenkins, Eli Apple; Reserves: B.W. Webb, Donte Deayon, Valentine’s View: Whoa! You had the feeling all along that the Giants would be searching the waiver wire for help at corner, but I didn’t think the moves would be this extensive. Chris Lewis-Harris had seemed to play his way into a spot, but the Giants thought otherwise. They also moved on from veteran Leonard Johnson and undrafted rookie Grant Haley. I have to think Haley lands on the practice squad. I also wouldn’t be surprised if the Giants use their No. 2 waiver wire priority to add to this position.Safeties (5) — Starters: Landon Collins, Curtis Riley; Reserves: Michael Thomas, William Gay, Sean ChandlerValentine’s View: More big changes. Darian Thompson waived/injured and Andrew Adams also sent packing. The Giants chose to keep the 33-year-old Gay and the undrafted rookie Chandler. They know what they are looking for , and the skill sets of Thompson and Adams weren’t it. This is what happens when you go 3-13 and change regimes. I’m not sure I fully agree with cutting Adams, but he wasn’t James Bettcher’s cup of team and that’s that.Special teamsPlacekicker — Aldrick RosasPunter — Riley DixonLong-snapper — Zak DeOssieValentine’s View: No surprises. Rosas earned the placekicking job. I believe, though, that he will be on a short leash. Early struggles could send the Giants looking for a veteran upgrade. The second half of the season is going to be an important one for the New York Giants. They’re not pushing for a playoff spot, but these next eight games will help give a glimpse into what the Giants have heading into the 2019 season. While the defensive side of the ball will have a focus on what players will be there next year, the offense has the players (for the most part) and needs to focus on how to use the talent at hand better than it has been during the 1-7 start. Let’s look at some steps the Giants can take to get the offense on track in the second half.Figure out the offensive lineThere’s no other place an offensive breakdown can start than where the offense most often breaks down. The left side of the offensive line has not and likely will not change. Nate Solder is financially locked in as the left tackle and Will Hernandez is the legitimate bright spot on the line. Outside of those two spots, though, nothing has been good or consistent. Ereck Flowers was benched. Patrick Omameh was benched. Jon Greco might be on his way back to the bench. The Giants claimed guard Jamon Brown off waivers from the Los Angeles Rams last week. Brown is just 25 years old and started all 16 games from the Rams in 2017, but a suspension to start the season and good play from fill-in Austin Blythe made Brown expendable. Last season Brown played the most snaps (1,077), had the second-fewest blown blocks (18, three behind Andrew Whitworth’s 15 on 155 more snaps), and allowed just one sack, per the Football Outsiders Almanac. He might be in line to start for the Giants as early as Monday night against the 49ers. If that’s the case, it will be the the fourth different starting combination the Giants have used this season. It will also have three different starters than the Week 1 lineup. For a unit where continuity and communication are important, that’s not great turnover to have.2018 Giants OL startersWeekLTLGCRGRTWeekLTLGCRGRTBrown is on the last year of his rookie deal, so if he does play well and the Giants want to keep him, they’ll have to re-sign him. If that’s not the case, the Giants might still be looking for three new starters on the offensive line come the offseason. That won’t be an easier task than it was this past offseason.Any complaints about the running game also fall into this category.Get in motion, pick up the paceLast season with the Minnesota Vikings, Pat Shurmur used pre-snap motion to create mismatches with the defense. This season, that’s gone away. Per Sports Info Solutions charting, the Giants use pre-snap motion on the ninth-lowest percentage of plays in the league. But they also have the sixth-biggest difference between yards per play with motion and yards per play without it. This should be an easy element to add to the offense since it’s something they have used at times already and it’s something Shurmur used way more often in his last stop.If the Giants aren’t going to use motion to make defenses uncomfortable, then maybe they can start to use pace. As it stands right now, the Giants are one of the slowest teams in the league when it comes to the pace of the offense, per Football Outsiders. On situation neutral plays — basically non-garbage time — the Giants run the 28th quickest offense in the league. At any point in the game when the score is within six points either way, the Giants are the 32nd-fastest offense. When the deficit gets to seven points or more, the Giants turn into the league’s fifth-fastest offense and that is when the unit has been the most dangerous and done its most damage. Since the Giants don’t change personnel as much as expected, getting to the line quicker and using pace to create mismatches for the likes of Odell Beckham and Saquon Barkley would help. The Giants don’t have to turn into the Chip Kelly Eagles (though, Shurmur was that team’s offensive coordinator), but a combination of limited misdirection, whether it be play-action or pre-snap motion, and a slow pace is the exact opposite of what’s happening with the evolution of modern offenses.Reinvent the wheelSaquon Barkley’s role in the passing game has been underwhelming at best over the first half of the season. He’s still been more productive as a receiver than a runner (minus-3.78 Expected Points Added on the ground and 13.1 EPA on pass targets), but his receiving production could be even better. He’s consistently targeted as a check down option and only recently has he gotten more work past the line of scrimmage. The easiest way to get Barkley involved past the line of scrimmage and limit the time needed to pass block is the wheel route. By EPA, the wheel route is one of the most efficient routes in football and when done correctly out of the backfield it sets the running back up with a matchup that’s nearly impossible for the defense to win. What makes the wheel route so hard to defend is that the defense usually has a linebacker on the running back when it’s man coverage. The route starts like it’s going to be a flat route, which gets the opposing defender moving horizontally, and then the running back turns up the field. There aren’t going to be many linebackers who can go from lateral movement to chasing a back on a vertical route. There are fewer who would be able to keep up with an athlete like Barkley. On this play, the Rams used it inside the 10-yard line and got Todd Gurley on linebacker Anthony Barr. When Gurley got out of the backfield, Barr had to stop and try to read Gurley’s break, but there was none and Gurley was able to run past him up the seam for an easy touchdown. The wheel can work on its own at any part of the field, but it can be opened up even more when there’s a route combination with it from the receiver on the same side. Typically that’s a slant or hitch that creates a natural pick that adds an extra element the defender needs to get through on his path to the running back. The Carolina Panthers used this on Thursday night against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Devin Funchess ran a quick slant and turned to get in the way of the linebacker while Christian McCaffrey ran an uncontested wheel out of the same side and had a clear path to the end zone.Opposing defenses against the Giants will already be focused on the slant potential from Odell Beckham, so adding a layer to that with a Barkley wheel outside of it creates a dangerous combination that shouldn’t be able to be defended. On this note, the Giants should use more combinations with Beckham and Barkley on the same side of the formation, wheel or not.Getting Barkley more efficient targets will help open up the passing game for others (more than a good running game would). The ability to gain yards on quick passes is something the Giants have tried to accomplish, but getting those routes open past the line of scrimmage will be significantly more useful than the high volume of dump offs Barkley has seen in the passing game so far.

Alert! Alert! And I just have to get back to him and be around the ball."Now, there are a couple of things worth mentioning here: First, Hill's world-class speed makes just about everybody look slow, even a quarterback with better-than-average speed. And second, Hill calling his QB slow is just part of the innocent banter that goes on daily in the Kansas City locker room. These aren't the Chiefs of yesteryear, when veterans such as Derrick Johnson, Tamba Hali and Alex Smith ruled the locker room. These bunch of Chiefs talk as much good-natured trash to each other as they do opposing teams, and the byproduct is a locker room that has grown remarkably close, and has been able to keep things light during a 4-0 start in which the spotlight has been bright.Need another example? Take Mahomes' unique voice. He's been chided about what coach Andy Reid called its "froggish" quality ever since Mahomes was in middle school. Mahomes long ago accepted it, and in truth he appreciates a good joke or imitation.Word in the locker room is Reid does it best, though he was unwilling to indulge during his weekly news conference.Wide receiver Demarcus Robinson also has a spot-on imitation, and tight end Travis Kelce — one of the longtime jokesters in the Chiefs locker room — is also quite good."I've heard the jokes since I was like, in the seventh grade," Mahomes said, "but it's something I've embraced. Kelce and Tyreek throw some shots at me, but I throw some shots right back."It's me. It's who I am. I'm never going to be insecure about it. Just embrace it and who I am."All these hijinks have helped the Chiefs deal with the pressure that comes with a perfect start, one that has the NFL buzzing. Three of their wins have come on the road Cheap Dalvin Tomlinson Jersey , including tough venues in Pittsburgh and Denver, and they appear to be the team to beat in the AFC West.Mahomes has thrown 14 TD passes without an interception, becoming not only the toast of Kansas City but a fantasy football darling everywhere.Kelce, Hill and newcomer Sammy Watkins have helped him flourish in an offense that seems predicated on fun, first and foremost, and running back Kareem Hunt is coming off his first 100-yard game, lest anybody think they can't go old-school.The result has been a crush of attention unlike anything the Chiefs have seen in recent years.Mahomes gets several hundred interview requests each week, and Kelce and Hill are bombarded when they go out in public. So many reporters and TV crews crammed in the club's tiny media room Wednesday that one openly pondered whether it was a violation of the fire code. You wouldn't know it from the way the Chiefs go about their business, though. Mahomes has a habit of locking himself in the film room, and nobody is trying to escape early when Friday rolls around."When you start to get in front of yourself in this thing, it's a humbling business," Reid cautioned this week. "You're playing the best in the world. You have to be sharp. There's not a lot of secrets anymore, so you really have to hone in and make sure you're on the top of your game, and it's not just me. It's everybody here, coaches and players alike."Keeping things light helps to accomplish just that. The latest subject of discussion had to do with whether Mahomes, a former prep basketball star, has enough ups to dunk. He insists there is video evidence showing him dunking during a high school game, and a grainy video surfaced on the internet that purportedly shows him poster-izing a defender."Pat cannot dunk, man," Hill insisted. "I had him in a celeb game this offseason. He tried to dunk a couple of times in warmups and clearly failed. That video is not Pat. That's some other kid."Let the trash-talk roll on.Notes: Safety Eric Berry (heel) remained the only Chiefs player out of practice Thursday. ... Special teams coach Dave Toub said the Chiefs are preparing for rain that is expected Sunday, when Kansas City plays Jacksonville. The forecast is calling for a 100 percent chance. "We had some chances to practice in rain in training camp," Toub said. "We'll do our wet-ball drills and we'll be ready."
  23. against the Jaguars Running back Rex Burkhead is battling a concussion and rookie Sony Michel has a knee injury , while Jeremy Hill is on the injured reserve. Wide receiver Julian Edelman is suspended and Chris Hogan was a ghost against the Houston Texans. Tight end Jacob Hollister is fighting an injury of his own.The New England Patriots need tight end Rob Gronkowski to have the game of his life against the Jacksonville Jaguars because there’s simply no one else to carry the offense.Who are the players that you can rely on producing in the Patriots offense this week? Phillip Dorsett had the game of his career against the Texans and it would be too much to ask him to elevate to another level of production this week; I’d be thrilled if he could come anywhere close to replicating it against A.J. Bouye or Jalen Ramsey. Maybe Hogan can have a rebound game and draw away some attention.James White can catch the ball out of the backfield, but that’s a tall order against Myles Jack and Telvin Smith. White isn’t a major threat to run the ball, which could make the Patriots offense one-dimensional and allow Jacksonville to drop extra players into coverage.Beyond those two- and maybe Hogan- there’s Cordarrelle Patterson, who is still developing a role in the offense; Dwayne Allen, who hasn’t been a big target in New England; ...and James Develin?Unless you want to heap a load of production on the recently signed Corey Coleman, Bennie Fowler Youth Lawrence Guy Jersey , or Kenjon Barner, or believe that this is the year that Matthew Slater breaks out as a receiver, then Gronkowski will be the centerpiece of the offense and more.Fortunately, Tom Brady and the Patriots trust Gronkowski to produce, no matter the circumstance.Gronkowski is dependable, when healthy , and he acknowledges that he and Brady have built their rapport through “a lot of practice, no doubt.” No one would be surprised to see Gronk erupt for a huge day, even if he’s covered by Ramsey or bracketed by the Jaguars linebackers and safeties.Gronkowski’s had 19 multi-touchdown games over the course of his career, but he’s exceeded 150 receiving yards just three times. He might have to combine those two milestones on Sunday.Last week, Gronkowski collected 7 receptions for 123 yards and a touchdown. He’ll have to do more than that to beat the Jaguars if the rest of the offense plays like they did in the opener. And they’ll have to be great to get a win in Jacksonville. The New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs are playing a close prime time contest early in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately for the Patriots’ offense, it will likely have to survive the rest of the game without one of its starting offensive linemen: right tackle Marcus Cannon left the contest late in the third quarter and went to the locker room for what has since been announced as a head injury. The veteran Shaq Mason Jersey , who missed one game earlier this season due to an ankle injury, is questionable to return. Considering the nature of his injury, it would not be a surprise to see him have to sit out the remainder of the contest and be placed in the concussion protocol. Cannon hurt his head in a collision late in the third period and has since been replaced by veteran backup LaAdrian Waddle. While Waddle is a solid backup, he will have his hands full going agains the Chiefs’ top passer rusher, Dee Ford.
  24. , the Patriots claimed victory over the previously unbeaten Chiefs, 43-40. What everybody thought would be an explosive game was just that. This game had it all, from quick strikes to long drives. I don’t know how everyone else feels, but I want round two. I know we’ve got a long season still ahead of us, but how fun was that game? Here are four quick-hit thoughts about the contest:1. This was just a shootout, plain and simple. The defenses on both sides were less than stellar in this game. What worries me is the Chiefs we’re missing key contributors on their defense like Justin Houston and Eric Berry to name a few. In a likely match-up come playoff time they’ll be suited up while the Patriots defense got shredded in this game. 2. What the Patriots have going for them on defense is time. Where the Patriots defense wasn’t spectacular in this game the offense showed up in a big way. Leading the attack for the Patriots Tom Brady (340 yards, 1 TD) showed while at his age of 41 he’s still capable of doing what Brady does. I would describe the QB match-up as old Lion vs new Lion. Give the old Lion time on the clock with a chance and you can bet he’s gonna come through in the end.3. Speaking of new Lion: Sony Michel, he’s been outstanding of late. What a difference a few weeks makes around here. How can you not be impressed by what he’s accomplished in his rookie season so far? I’m not gonna go into the whole “he sucks,” that we all heard on Boston Sports talk. What’s the point in that when he’s doing his talking on the field? I think we’re all seeing a legitimate threat in the backfield to go along with Mr. Consistent James White. If the two complement each other well going forward this offense can become lethal.4. Something to keep a eye on this week will be the health of Marcus Cannon as the Patriots take on the Bears this week, who themselves have a pretty nasty defense – one much better than what the Patriots saw against the Chiefs. The right tackle will be closely monitored as Khalil Mack can wreak absolute havoc on you.I think after the game we all need to exhale Cheap Joe Thuney Jersey , and enjoy what we’ve got. With us being Patriots fans it goes with the territory of expecting a win, but make no mistake about it – despite the Chiefs’ playoff failures, they’ll be back. We always hear there’s a difference between regular season KC and playoffs KC. I think we just saw a preview of the AFC conference finals. What a wild season it’s been already, and we’re not even at the halfway point. I love this game and the Pats. As always you can follow me on Twitter @Chris_Blackey. Like I always say – Go, Pats!鉁 While the New England Patriots defense has had its fair share of issues so far this season, some players still stood out — at times at least. Stephon Gilmore is playing like one of the NFL’s best cornerbacks this season, Dont’a Hightower and Kyle Van Noy have made multiple big plays the last eight games, and Lawrence Guy has become a key cog in New England’s defensive machinery. One player, however, has arguably outperformed them all.Fourth-year man Trey Flowers is taking the next step in his already impressive career development this season and he is now one of the NFL’s dominant forces on the defensive edge. What makes the 25-year old so good Cheap Danny Shelton Jersey , is his sound performance against both the run and the pass. Rarely leaving the field, the former fourth-round draft pick has produced no matter the situation or alignment the coaching staff put him in.Through eight weeks, he has registered 2.0 sacks, six quarterback hits and 11 hurries, and also made 20 tackles against the run with a team-high five of which resulting in stops. As a result of his stellar play in both defensive phases, it is no surprise to see Flowers mentioned among the best players the league has to offer at his position. In fact, he is the first name that comes up when asking advanced analytics website Pro Football Focus. With an overall grade of 90.8 — consisting of an NFL-best 90.1 run defense grade and a 10th best 79.3 pass rushing performance — Flowers comes up on top in the latest defensive edge rankings. And while Pro Football Focus is not the be-all and end-all when it comes to analyzing and evaluating play, it is still nice to see the Patriots defender get some national recognition for his 2018 campaign so far. And there is still room for improvement, it seems. After all, Flowers’ pressure statistics would look even better if opposing passers did not get the football out as quickly as they did: overall Cheap James White Jersey , he has beaten the blocker lined up across from him 18 times without recording a pressure, the second-highest total in the league. If Flowers can trend just a bit towards the NFL’s mean, he should improve his pass rushing grade and more importantly become even more of an impact-player for the Patriots defense. No matter what you think of PFF and its grading system it is clear that New England has a star player on the defensive edge, one that will likely command top dollar if he reaches the open market next offseason. The Patriots would be smart to try to prevent this from happening. Of course, it always takes two to tango and at this rate Flowers’ potential wish for immediate security and loyalty to the club would likely be his main motivation to enter the negotiating table. One thing seems certain, though: Flowers will get paid one way or another.
  25. , and he clearly hasn’t been right for a few weeks, if at all this year. So what do the Patriots do with Gronk now? When healthy, he’s the best tight end in the game, and maybe the single most unstoppable player as well. But, he has a history of injuries lingering for him. Should the Patriots let him rest and try to heal and sacrifice now in an attempt to keep him healthy for the postseason?First off, this is why every other fan base hates us. The Patriots have played seven games and we’re already talking about what they should do in the playoffs. We’ve already penciled (more like sharpied) them in as the winner of the AFC East, and a contender in the AFC.Now, on to answering the question: I think the Patriots need to sit him out for as long as possible. I’m not sure what exactly that means in terms of how long he’s going to sit out, but there’s no reason to play him if he’s not healthy. New England’s offense continues to move the ball and score, even without his production. Add a healthy Gronk to what they already have on offense, and they’ll be nearly unstoppable. The biggest concern is the seeding. I know that Andy Reid’s teams almost always fall apart in the playoffs, but going to Arrowhead to play the Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game is not something that I’d be overly confident about. Then there is just getting the bye. Right now the Patriots have the second best record in the AFC, but the Steelers, Bengals Youth Stephen Gostkowski Jersey , Ravens, and Texans are all right behind them. It seems inconceivable that any of those teams will be able to catch them, but it’s at least worth remembering. If there’s even a chance that Gronk isn’t 100% for Monday night’s game in Buffalo, I don’t want him playing. Now, he is from Buffalo, and loves playing there, typically crushing the Bills, but I don’t care. Every year is the same in New England. If you don’t win the Super Bowl, the season is a failure. The last thing I want is Gronk running out of steam or being too hurt to be able to dominate in the playoffs.Yes, the Patriots have Edelman back, and they have Gordon now, but that’s even more of a reason to sit Gronkowski, in my opinion. You have a chance for a nearly unstoppable team with Brady at the helm. Don’t lose that because Gronk wants to hit some incentives during the regular season. Tell him you’ll pay him as if he reached everything if that will convince him, but do everything you can to make sure he’s healthy for the most important three games of the season.
