Post VCAN (Virginia Coastal Access Now)

Atlantic Anglers Board,

First and foremost, I would like to thank Sam for his generosity in allowing me to make this post with his approval ~ Thanks Sam!

I’m proud to formally introduce to Atlantic Anglers website to Virginia Coastal Access Now (VCAN) a non-profit corporation that represents recreational anglers and environmental advocates working to maintain and enhance the public’s access to Virginia’s beaches and waterways within the Commonwealth of Virginia’s coastal zone. VCAN was legally incorporated with the Virginia State Corporation Commission on September 18, 2006. Our non-profit was formed as a result of the real loss of public access to Virginia’s coast.

A few of the public access projects that VCAN is currently working on:

· Challenging the City of Norfolk over the resident only parking and illegal closure of real public access at Willoughby Spit Beach.
· Enhancing the public’s access to the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in the establishment of night surf fishing at the Refuge beach.
· Opposing another Virginia Beach development at Lynnhaven Inlet, “Indigo Dunes”, as it harms a unique environmental habitat and eliminates a historical public access.

As we all know too well, the more coastline that gets developed, the more Public Access we and future generation lose. VCAN’s members, Board of Directors, and I look forward to working with everyone on Virginia’s Coastal Zone Public Access Issues. Check us out on our website at www.vcanaccess.com, vcan@cox.net (e-mail) or feel free to contact me here on Atlantic Anglers. Our website is new and is not without it’s growing pains, so please feel free to comment. The website was designed to keep our members and public aware of current public access issues and developments along with keeping everyone informed on what we are currently working on.

Thanks in advance for your support of public access and the protection of Virginia’s coast.

P.S. Hopefully you will enjoy the fishing reports that we will start posting here on the VA Board! The new Va. Boys that have migrated over here in the past weeks will keep you entertained, that is for sure!
