Default New MotorGuide T/Motor Broke After Two Month's, So I Fixed It......

Bought a new remote control MotorGuide trolling motor about two month's ago and the transmission went out. You could hear the motor run that turned it from left to right, but it wouldn't turn.
I decided to fix it my self. There is not that many moving parts in the transmission any way....
Well I put it on the table in the shop and decided to tear it down and see what was wrong.
Here is the unit opened up.

Come to find out, the little electric motor that turned the transmission had a tiny gear on it that had striped on the shaft that it was pressed on.

Here is the gear that I had to do some work on. As you can see, its pretty small.

What I did was cut the top of the shaft that came out of the electric motor and also the plastic gear so I could re-enforce it with a small piece of steel.

I left the motor in place and also covered up everything with a rag when I did my grinding to keep the fragments of metal and plastic out of the transmission.
Here is an old feeler gauge that I cut the end off of and used to fill in the grove that was cut with a high speed grinder (Dremel Tool).
A VERY small piece was cut off the end of it and used inside the grove with epoxy to make sure the small shaft didn't slip inside the gear again.

Here is the finished product. Ill give it until tomorrow to set up and cure.

Ill let you know how long it last..........(But Im pretty sure it will last longer than two month's)

    Nice going Rick!!
Looks like a pretty small motor, and geez, plastic gear??? I'm glad I keep all kinds of small parts that I find.

Did you use JB Weld? (several blends available)
I'd be curious how the combo of plastic & metal melded together hold up, that's an odd coupling.

But it may very well work!

Yea,,JB Weld is some good stuff and I have used it many times, but I had some Perma-Tex in the shop that is made for medal and plastic.
I think that with the epoxy and the slot I cut with the metal in it, this should hold up pretty good.

I put it back together today and put it on the boat. Plugged it in and worked it back and forth with no problems..

I'm thinking that if something went wrong,,,it would be the plastic gear that could split in half from the cut I put in it.......Time will tell.........

Rick it looks like you did a good job on the fix. If it fells again get a Minn Kota, I had the same problems with a motor guide. Three motors in two seasons; I just about lost it the third time!! I got a Minn Kota and have had the same Minn Kota for three years no problems.

    Good Luck Capt. Rick,

Rick, I hate them dang things! And man have they got expensive over the years. I could buy a Kicker for the bow for the same price.

Thats just one of the reasons I went back to a larger boat, with a good anchor....and of course my float-rig.

    RELAXATION!
