If you want a power wrapper the Pacific Bay power wrapper is a nice machine fairly inexpensive.
Flex Coat High Build finish is the easiest to start with.
Larger rods are easier than smaller rods for starters but the blanks cost more.
Flex coat 6rpm drying motor
brushes, razor blades, good scissors, masking tape 1/16" and 1/2"
for thread gudebrod NCP purple with silver underwrap would like very nice with that reel.
I personally use different machine and finish but when i started this is what I used. just a few suggestions for a beginner to keep it simple and fun.
hope this helps.
Gary, still looking to unload that used 1569?

Thanks, that is the info I was looking for. You say the larger blanks are more expensive but easier. Are the smaller blanks cheap enough for me to spend less learning on smaller, or should I drop the money on a larger blank and start with that?
yes i still have it.
did you get your rack from gene? he is first class and willing to go out of his way.
send me an email or give me a call if you get a chance.

Gary, He is putting it on Saturday,,,decided to go with the big boy, 6' by 30",,,figure I may have enough in the kitty for one more rod until fall,,,BTW, finally thru the 1509 with a much typical shorter leader and was going over the bar, although I had some help with a good tailwind after the storm on Friday.

I want to start building too but I just don't have the money to start. I have a friend that is willing to help but it would be hard because the wrapper is at his house and he lives an hour and a half away. It would work out great though since I can get blanks fairly cheap and overall it would be a lot cheaper than having someone do it for me. I think I still want to get one more rod built for me by someone else before I start building just to make sure I have a good rod. debating between a fusion, a 1509, and possibly a cuntury. I'll probably go with the fusion though.
It will not be cheaper to build your own. retail blanks are 200-300 plus 50-100 for components then buying a wrapper, putting 8-15 hours at $???/hour and so on, don't fool yourself into thinking it will be cheaper. It may be more satisfying and more convenient but deffinately not cheaper.Originally Posted by Pier_man0909

Ok so I'm seriously considering doing this. I have a birthday coming up and some people looking at presents. Where would you suggest sending them for the Wrapper, I found on on Ebay@ $239 buy it now price. Or would you suggest someone else?
Ok, well I'm gonna do it. One of my christmas presents was a book on rod building. Read through it already and it sounds simple enough. I think I'm going to start with a kit, I know the kits aren't the best, but for my first one I don't think I'm going to start expensive. I want to try my hand at it first. Once I know I can produce a nice rod, then I will slowly but surely start building better quality rods to replace some of the ones I have. I am thinking I will start with a mh 6'6" casting rod to replace my current jigging rod (which is in need of repair now anyhow). I will be making the stand tonight or tomorrow night over in dad's workshop.....I priced them online and for a hand wrapper I'm looking at spending about $30-$50, all for about $5 worth of wood. So, dads workshop it is. I will also be ordering the kit today or tomorrow. So hopefully by next week I'll have my first completed custom rod. I really hope I enjoy it (I don't see why I wouldn't) It will be nice to have a whole rack of custom rods to take fishingSo, I will take pictures start to finish and post them up for everyone to see.
Jeff, I just started rebiulding one of my tica's. The guides were coming off so I decided for my first building project I would strip it down to the bare blank...seat, grips and guides all off. Upgrading everything. I just got all my stuff in today and plan on putting the guides on tonight and the real seat. I practiced wrapping the guides and they came out perfect. After this, I am going to buy a 1569 blank and start that rod. I'll post pics of the finished product.

Went over to dad's house tonight to use his workshop and built my hand wrapper. its assembled and drying overnight. I'll head over there tomorrow after work work on the notches a little (where the blank will sit) and then line them with felt. I'm seriously considering getting some of the mudhole specials sanded or unsanded blanks 4.99 or 9.99. I think those will work for starters. I should have pictures of the wrapper tomorrow
