    Default Sand Spikes

    Hi,

Currently I have 2 "smallish" PVC sand spikes (sea striker ?) but want taller ones.

Was thinking about getting some 1.5" PVC from the Depot and making some new spikes....

A lot of the pics I see posted on DelMarva Fishing seem to show people using ones that are fairly tall. How tall are they though ??? 4', 5' etc. What's a good length to cut the PVC to ?

Should I just use a hack saw to cut the angle ?

Also -- for those folks who have made their own, do you even bother flaring the ends or do you just go w/ the diameter of the pipe you started with ?

    Thanks,
    Excalibur

I just made-up some up on saturday. went to Home Depot and bought 2 x 8' lengths of angled aluminum, (1/2" x 1/2" I think)wasn't cheap at @$20.00 per 8' section. cut 1 in half and made 2 4" vesions and if I have time, I'll may make a 6' too and I used a hacksaw to angle the sand spike end and did not bother to flair the PCV pipe, but I did drill some holes in the top of the PCV for putting hooks into while re-baiting, so the hooks just ain't dangling out there

That's pretty weak isn't it? My 1 1/2" V aluminum is torque bending at the foot push now. I'm looking for some cheap AL now and will TIG up a tall spike this week. I'll post a pic of the finished product.

The PVC is your best choice for the money just cut an 10' stick in half on an angle and your good to go. I made one with the aluminum and by the time you put it together it end up costing more then I would like for a sand spike, the aluminum is not cheap to get in an "L" and can run $20 plus so the PVC is the best way to go.. just my 2 cents.

Saw someone use a fence post and attached PVC pipe to the top with duct ties. It is easy to push in the sand as the post has a foot plate to push in the ground with. I think he told me he spent about $10 - $15.

I cut a 10' piece of 2"pvc in half. Use a hacksaw. Then 18" down I drill a hole in the pvc and insert a bolt so the rod does not bang against the pvc, it also keeps the rod up higher.

Educate me on this guys.... Never surf fished - always been a boater.

You have my mind doing some thinking.

    A. How far out of the ground
    B. How far into the ground
    c. Does the material need to flex?
    d. Do you Bang it into the ground?
    e. Is there anything out on the market now ?
e1. If so.. What is it, how is it made and how much.

Does someone make one out of metal/steel that has an auger on one end and a hole on the other to put your pole into?

I made my own PVC rod holders as follows

First I bought some 1 ½” PVC and cut it in half with a cross cut wood saw. You can use a hack saw but the cross cut is faster.

Then I drilled a hole to support the bottom of the rod. I made sure that at least 4” of the handle was showing above the spike or about 18” and mounted a ¼” SS bolt in the hole.

I then filled a pan with 1” of peanut oil and dipped the end of the rod holder in the 350 degree oil for a couple of seconds. Then I slid the surf spike over the end of a wine bottle until a bell shape in the end of the spike was formed. Then I used a damp cool rag to cool the plastic while the spike was on the bottle.

Finally I got some glow tape (yellow) and put three strips on the bell end of the surf spike.

    They look factory made

    Bada-Bing!
In a nutshell, Bev has it...
I used the $4 green chicken wire fence post for starters. I then took a 4' piece of PVC and rounded off the top of the so it won't cut or rub into my poles. I drilled a hole through the PVC and slid a #10 bolt, lock washer and nut through as a butt stop. Just put the butt beside the PVC and you can see where you need to drill. You'll want the reel free of the PVC. I attached the PVC to the post with 2 hose clamps.

For my Taco rod (Tica) I had to use 2" PVC because the butt is larger.

Some folks like to be able to just lift the rod a little instead of pulling it all the way out of the PVC. I have that too. I took an old bed frame (steel) and used it for the angle that others are talking about above instead of aluminum. It was free!

Ryan, I bang everything into the sand with a piece of firewood. Ideally you'll want 2' in the ground and 4' out of the ground is fine.
It's especially important if using heavy gear for sharkin to really get that thing pounded well into the sand.
