TORONTO — Maple Leafs center Kris Newbury was taken off the ice on a stretcher late in the third period after a fight with Pittsburgh's Ronald Petrovicky on Saturday night. The Toronto forward took several punches to the head before falling to the ice. He stayed motionless for several minutes before taken being off.
The two dropped gloves 33 seconds after Pittsburgh tied it at 5, and the game was delayed for about six minutes.

Not sure if any of you caught the fight on Saturday night, but let me tell you Petrovicky knocked Newbury out cold.... he was out before he hit the ice, well deserved I think after all the cheap crap the Leafs were getting away with all night.

Didnt see the game. Wish I would have. I grew up a flyers fan still am, and it sucks to be me nowadays. But man I remember some classic stuff. Guys not wearing helmets when I started enjoying the game. Bobby Clarke was one of my favorites.... Then it was mandatory for the new guys to wear helmets in like 80 or something. Now its the face shields. Dam pretty boys...

Gotta love it when the refs just sit back and wait till some one hits the ice before stepping in to make sure no one gets hurt, that's so nice of them.. and makes for some good video

As much as I Love the Pens I gotta savor this flavor because it isn't too often that a Pen wins a fight anymore.

That was one of the first games I missed all year and from watching the highlights it was one of the best games all year. That will teach me to visit the parents!

Story is the Pens are shopping around for an enforcer before the deadline. They have been catching serious flak for not protecting the soon to be superstars...... we seriously need someone like Domi or Brashear a serious badass to strike fear into the hearts of the league.... Carins was good but with his concussion problems he isn't likely to factor in to that role anymore. And Dave, the rule is once they drop the gloves..... the refs stand back till someone goes down. the refs don't want to get hit, would you those guys are tough.

Default Coolest sport around......

from the Leafs home page....Petrovicky knocked the crap out of him and calls the next day to make sure he's ok..... amazing sportsmen...

February 12, 2007

(TORONTO) -- Toronto Maple Leafs winger Kris Newbury, it turns out, will only be out a week in what turned out be to a more scary-looking incident than it really was. It was so scary that Pittsburgh Penguins winger Ronald Petrovicky, who decked Newbury with a series of rights Saturday night, called the next day to make sure he was OK.
``I appreciate that and I told him that,'' Newbury said Monday in the Leafs' dressing room. ``It was a freak accident that happens every once in a while in the game.''
They spoke for 10 minutes.
``I told him it wasn't his fault,'' said Newbury, who turns 25 next Monday. ``He felt bad about what happened.''
It certainly looked a lot worse. Newbury lay motionless for 30 seconds before awakening just as Toronto's training staff began treating him.
A large pool of blood collected under his head and he was strapped to a spinal board and taken for treatment. He later went to hospital for examination.
But Newbury, amazingly, didn't suffer a concussion. He rode the bike Monday and can't wait to get back on the ice.
``I think they'll keep me off for a couple of days just for precautionary reasons and then hopefully be back on the ice in about a week,'' he said. ``No concussion-like symptoms, I feel pretty good.
``The back of my head is a little sore from the staples being there but other than that I'm pretty good.''
Newbury earned a spot with the Leafs this season after the team lost several forwards to injury. He's played mostly on the fourth line in an energy role and has two goals and four points in 15 games.
He saw the fight on video.
``Yeah I've seen it a couple of times,'' said Newbury. ``It doesn't look good. But injuries are part of the game and every now and then you get a scary one.''
His cellphone was filled with concerned messages. Petrovicky wasn't the only one who was worried.
``The phone really hasn't stopped ringing,'' said Newbury. ``It's a good thing that people care and want to know how I'm doing, I appreciate that.''
The incident revived the anti-fighting element from some hockey observers. Newbury, for the record, doesn't agree with them.
The fight with Petrovicky was his second of the NHL season.
``Especially for my game, it's part of what I do and what I get paid for,'' he said. ``I think it belongs in the game, it's just a freak accident that happens every once in a while.''
