Default Time for a change

In order to prevent serious problems and then trying to remedy the crises later on the DNR is anxious to make necessary some changes now. After seeing more and more people fishing in the rivers and at our landings and creating more and more pressure on the resources, State lawmakers voted to implement new regulations, which included reducing bag limits and decreasing size limits on black drum, saltwater catfish and weakfish and tighten regulations on spotted seatrout, flounder and black sea bass.

These new regulations to stabilize fishes’ habitat and stabilize fish populations went into effect Friday and are moving towards offering greater protection for the recreational fishery."

There were instances where the DNR and the legislatures weren’t in agreement, for example, regulations on the red drum , however, the DNR agreed with the changes regarding the black drum, weakfish and two saltwater catfish species.

The federal South Atlantic Fishery Management Council voted Friday to ban snapper and grouper fishing along three reefs off the state's coast. The nearest are about 60 to 75 miles off Hilton Head Island. Those changes will face approval by the U.S. secretary of commerce, which could take several months, said Kim Iverson, an agency spokeswoman.
