Man Drowns Trying to Save Teen Who Fell in River
WELLSVILLE, N.Y. (AP) - A firefighter died yesterday in western New York after trying to save a teenage boy who fell into the Genesee River during a fishing derby.
State police say 65-year-old Ronald Thomas of Wellsville was fishing in a trout derby in Allegany County yesterday afternoon when the teen fell over a small waterfall in Wellsville, near the Pennsylvania border about 70 miles southeast of Buffalo. Thomas, who was a Wellsville firefighter, jumped in to rescue him, but was pulled under the water. Troopers said Thomas lost consciousness in the water.The teen who fell into the water is Okay.
