Later this summer, a Congressional panel is expected to approve new safety regulations for commercial fishing captains of vessels that fish more than three miles offshore.
The Captains would be required to earn a certificate by passing a safety training course and they would have to take a refresher course at least every five years to keep their certificates valid. The idea is to make commercial fishing safer and to prevent future tragedies such as the lost lives of four fishermen during the Jan. 25th sinking of the New Bedford dragger Lady of Grace. Source |
