I fished AI tonight from 9pm to 3am. It was truly the snottiest night of fishing for me yet. The rain was steady pelting me from the N/E. Plenty of doggies, but no stripes.
Here are a few pictures from Ed Moore of Berlin. He and his buddies caught them a few days ago at IRI.

Was all of this in SC or is some of it at AI? I can't tell where it all applies since it isn't in the SC forum, although I do know Folly Pier is in SC.
you guys ever use a float to get the bait up and away from the skates? I'm thinking about a baloon 5-6 ft (maybe 2-3) behind the hook and after the sinker. Think it will work for stripes and sharks? I'm definitely doing it in SC when I go in a couple weeks...good reports are in. I think if you are using live bait keeping it floundering at the top would really increase your odds of it being seen. "A 31 pound king mackerel was caught and landed today on the pier.I know for sure as I helped gaff it. So it's time. Some Spanish as well. Menhaden are small but plentiful. Fished the King end of Folly Pier Saturday. It was one of the best days weatherwise I've seen in ages. The guy next to me caught a whopping 30" Blue. It was skinny and only weighed 7 pds 13 ozs but what a rush seeing him hit a 10 to 12 inch blue that was being used as bait. We caught about 10 blues. Other fish being caught were whiting, small pompano, sandsharks, and huge stingrays. Also a couple of nice trout and a Spanish Mackerel. Water was green and very little chop.Netted menhaden in the 6 to 8 inch range. Had to quit fishing the diamond at the end at 5:00 pm due to a wedding but still a great day to be fishing. It's only a matter of time !!" 12 days and counting... By the time I get back it might be charkin weather on AI.
My question was about floating the baits, the "reports" were folly reports and good news for an impending trip where I plan on floating both cut bait and live bait because it sounds like the rays are in thick. I was wondering if it is good/bad to do it when targeting other feesh.
we can move it, or half of it, I was just excited =). |

Hmmm, ok understand. I use alot of different floats/bobbers back in the calmer tidel waters, never thought about in the surf. might have to try that-out :v:

Only problem with surf fishing and floats is the current. You will wind up with your line on the beach. Balloons you won't be able to toss much past the surf break and it'll wash right back in.
You pretty much have to be in a boat to use any float on top stuff or balloons. The little floats at the hooks are ok from the beach though. Now, if ya got a stiff west wind ya might be able to get a balloon to go out. Or just attach to a kite, same as in a boat.

AI trophy weekend. Monster stripers. I caught a 45in and a 51in both released Friday 7pm and 11pm. The 51 was a monster with huge body and no doubt over 50lb. Glad I released her because if it was a new record it would have only been one for 2 hours as 8nbait caight the new SR at 57.4 at 1 am Sat. What a weekend. 3 - 50lb+ stripers and many in 40s. My 51 was my personal biggest ever. Wished I got a girth but what a horse. I was too worried about the release and a pic so details slipped my mind. FISH ON! |

And for those of you who haven't met Dave (Critter Gitter) in real life, he's a pretty tall guy and he holds his fish in tight! :-)
