Default doggies and more doggies

Gentleman,
Let me say first that it's great to finally join the website....took me too long...
My buddy and I caught countless doggies Saturday night ( 5/31) until we nearly got tired of pulling them off the hook....We soaked baits from 4:30 Saturday evening until 4:15 Sunday morning.....just doggies and skates...I honestly lost count...I got to try out my new St Croix, and it was sweeeeet. I was really hoping for a stray striper or even a nice toothy critter to grab on...but we still had an awesome time...the bunker from Bucks was the best I've ever seen........SSW winds 12-15 most of the night and an impressive electrical storm farther south....The stars finally showed up around 2:30 AM.....
Hoping to get back out in a couple weeks.....

Stan

Sam,
11.6 ft Premier....rated to 6 ounces...and I was pushing that limit with no problem...
I paired it up with a penn 650 SSM 15 pound mono, 50 pound shock leader......It loaded up real nice with 6 ounces and a bunker head with 16/0 circle...and the leverage was incredible....with the sw wind we had, the baits were launching out there pretty far....I'm no distance casting champion, but it felt darn good...

This should probably be on another thread, but the next move is to a conventional set-up, but I'm a lefty and the only LH reels I've seen out there that look appealing to me are the Avet's.....I'm not concerned about digging in my pockets to get the right one, but I'm not educated in magging reels and would prefer an "off the shelf" solutuion......any suggestions ?
Thanks,
Stan

Read this thread. Several people on here use, love and swear by their avets...I'll let them speak up for themselves Here's coop's thread on magging his avet...seems very simple

I installed a knbby mag in my avet

If you been using spinning reels in the left handed setup (crank on right side) then using a right handed conventional (crank on right side) should not feel weird to you.

I never really understood why spinning reels have the crank on the left side and conventional on the right side.

The Avets are super nice reels, I love the lever drag. They are super duper easy to static mag yourself. Only slightly more difficult to do an adjustable knobby mag, it just takes a lot of guts to drill a hole into your new 190 dollar reel. (no drilling necessary for static mag). Coop is our resident expert on the Avet reels and magging them. He showed me how to do it in 5 minutes while sitting on the beach.

Jeff...thanks for sending me Coops's article......a tad intimidating throwing that drill bit on the reel, but it does look good........

Jim,
Spinning or conventional baitcast I've always used my left hand.....crankin on the left side for both of them( and none of that upside down backwards crap either ........Been a lefty all my life...

I definitely like the static mag concept...maybe I can get one of those 5 minute lessons one of these days.................

The static mag is a 30 second lesson, the 5 minute lesson is the knobby mag.

You lose a lot of flexibility with the static mag, there is no adjusting the mag force for wind conditions or temp. I actually use both versions in my reel. I have a reel small static mag thats in and also a slightly larger knobby magnet to make adjustments with.

Stan - I have two avets knobby magged using the method Coop described in his thread and the way Jim described.

I agree it is very simple. However I also have complete confidence in my ability to screw anything simple up...so I had someone do it for me.

I'm very happy with my reels though. I'm in Avalon NJ this week and have been pulling in dozens of 3-4 ft doggies with them (still waiting on that elusive striper to test the famous avet drag...).

Steve,
Thanks for the info...good luck with the striper action....Those doggies can wear you out and ut up a good fight, but I'd trade 20 of them for a big rock...
What rods are you using with your Avet's ? I was looking at the St. Croix Premier 12' XH rated 4-16 ounce....and using it for my BIG baits....

The St. Croix is a nice rod, but not a good value for the money you will spend.

I would suggest either an Ocean Master or Tica rod (both less than 150)

If you want to spend money on a really good rod I suggest getting a custom built rod. A lot of people use a rainshadow 1569 or 1509.
