Well I did a little more reading into this striper migration and found that many stripers that inhabit the waters off of North Carolina due in fact head up the Delaware to spawn, as well as, a few go even further and head to the Hudson, another very important spawning ground for stripers. Naturally, the majority of them do go up the Chesapeake. Another area, the Albemarle Sound in North Carolina, has a few stripers that spawn in those waters and I often wonder if we will see these fish soon if not already. I know my fish was a prespawn fish and Dave said his was also, making me believe that Steve is correct that these fish are going up the Delaware and are not confused at all.
Now the question, what about those Albemarle fish and other fish that spawn in the very low regions of the chesapeake and other tributaries along our immediate coast? I am not sure how many do in fact spawn in those locations, but I would think that they are done spawning and heading up the coast and probably passing AI as I am typing this. It would be interesting to see if any fish caught here shortly are post spawned fish and on the skinny side. I do think that the majority of the real big cows are yet to come, maybe in May, but I certainly do believe a very large fish can still be taken now that could be a post spawned fish. With such warm waters this winter and water temps close to 50 now, I now truly think that we can catch fish from now, hopefully some post spawned fish, until the very beginning of June. As you go further off shore the water cools off quite a bit, so I think if there are some stripers coming and those fish should be hugging the coast in the warmer water. I still think the peak will not be until sometime in mid May, but I think now still can be productive to catch one. With all that being said, I am excited about my prospects of catching a fish within the next couple weeks,,,hopefully
