His story sounds right out of an Ernest Hemingway novel, hmmmmm....
Since it's a narrow hook, in relation to the gap, what I would guess it's use to be is to hold the whale against the ship while they carved it. Not going for the shark hook story, too much leverage at the barb.... Nice lookin' piece of history though.
