Scientists exploring, with a remotely operated submersible, search what's in the great depths so they can better understand the ecosystem off of the miles-deep, never-before-seen patches of the ocean floor craggy bottom known as the Gully.
This largest underwater canyon in eastern North America is home to a newly discovered species of starfish, bright white and pink corals, a strange-looking silvery octopus named Dumbo and a single-cell animal the size of a grapefruit (that had previously been found only in deepest mid-Atlantic). As this team of about 20 Canadian researchers probed the waters off Nova Scotia and Newfoundland they saw evidence of extreme damage caused by bottom trawling prompting a need for determination of which marine areas should be closed off and protected.
