Default new here

Hi! My names's Chris and I'm new to the site. I'v bee reading it for quite a while. I will be down at the national campsite in AI for a
couple of nights at the end of the month. I have caught small fish
like spot from the surf and baby blues from the 50 bridge last year.
The idea of shark fishing intrigues me. I have a few questions. Is there anyplace to rent an ocean kayak? I would like to give it a try.
Do you think it is worth trying with like a whole spot or baby blue just casted out as far as you can or do you really need to yak the bait out. The idea of taking bait out in the dark or around sunset scares the hell out of me. Has anyone ever been bumped while yaking out or wading out? Thanks in advance for any info.

I think the best casted baits are kingfish heads, bunker heads and half of a spot. Yakkin out baits is not necessary, but fun.

Welcome to the site.

welcome to the site, there are many of us that do not have a kayak and are very successful casting and catching shark, usually all you need for bait is a head, tuna belly, croaker chunks all do well. and at high tide you will be surprised at how close those toothy critters come into shore. prime time is usually around 6pm- 11pm. and at sunrise.

Welcome Chris,,,blue, king, and croaker heads all work very well and are very easily castable. Yaking allows for large baits such as half a fish.

don't underestimate a live spot at dusk. Had 4 hard knockdowns and runs that stole my spot each time. Need a better way to hook them...

welcome

What size hook would you guys recommend for a bunker head or a half a spot? Circle or 'j' ? I'm guessing the normal fish finder type of rig setup.

I'm thinking about going out sharking for the first time on Friday. I plan on doing it around the south beach parking lot. Is it warm enough yet? I'm also thinking about trying one of those chum products that alltackle.com sells. Anyone have any luck with them? I'm probably going to be inside the bar unless i can find a cheap long board or something for sale.

I'm using a 16/0 mustad circle hook.I 'm going to try bunker heads or halfs. Maybe spot if I can catch some around here before I go.

Here are some threads from this site that I used to set up my shark rig:

Good info, Bryan. I think the water is warm enough as Coop has caught a few nice sharks already this month.

A 16/0 Mustad is fine, maybe even a little large based on bait size. Chuck whatever you can out there. At night we have even found the toothie ones right behind the surf break. The key is to have enough line to work the critter as they have the ability to rip the line out. But of course folks have beached some nice ones with limited amounts line, just helps to have more.

Welcome to your new home Chris!
