Default Sharpening Hooks

Ok - I'm getting some hooks pre snelled for this weekend at AI.

I have basically two types of hooks I've been using the old Gami octopus circles (for small clam sized 5/0 - 7/0) and owner ssw circles (sized 8/0-10/0). I've been noticing that the gamis are 10x sharper out of the bag than the owners...and i'm thinking i should either switch brands from Owner or start sharpening my owners before use...

Any tips/tuturial on the best way to sharpen hooks? Never did this before - if a hook got dull, i'd just replace it with a new one...so give me the basics tools, techniques....Don't wanna miss stickin that striper this weekend due to a dull hook!

Thanks

I have recently switched to the Gami Octopus circles as well. My advice is to go to wally world and get a file type hook sharpener and just get some on your owner hooks and practice and see what you can do.

When I fished the owners I carried the sharpener with me and touched the hook up a tiny tiny tiny bit almost every time I put bait on the hook. With the Gami's I didn't have to touch them once all day fishing.

BTW-- I been using 8/0 gami's for just about everything.

Yeah I think i'll probably switch as well - just have a mess of the owners to use up....and don't have any bigger gamis at the moment. The owners aren't offset near as much as the gamis - depending on your preference that could be good or bad. I would think it would help your chances of hooking the fish, but at the same time increase your likelyhood of gut hooking as the offset allows the hook to grab easier before hitting the corner of the mouth.

You can get the Gami's inline (non offset) Here is a link to the red ones, I am sure they have normal color as well.

SPRO/Gamakatsu - Octopus Inline Circle Red 8/0 4per pk - $2.39 - All in General Outdoor Superstore

I've been using those as well. Stay sharp for days.

It's the 8/0 gami. They are inexpensive and work well. I don't offset them because I don't want to gut hook a fish.

All the Octopus circles I have seen for sale locally are offset a bit. I haven't seen any that where inline. I just ordered a bunch of packs (yes they are cheap) from an online store to use once I finish up the couple of off-set packs I bought locally.

I may just try to pick up some gami 8/0's or bigger once I get to OC friday...and use them in place of the 9/0 and 10/0 SSWs I had...I really want to give myself every chance in the world this weekend!

You know what they say - Good knots, sharp hooks, fresh bait, and Time on the beach. That's all you need!

Yeah Jim - Thats what I see as well- that the "typical" gami octopus that are stocked (and the 7/0s i currently use) have a pretty decent size offset. -much more than the SSWs.

I haven't seen the the octopus circles bigger than 8/0 unless you go into the 4x stuff. The regular 8/0 are plenty big enough for me. They are about the same size as the 9/0 owner SSW hooks.

I really wish these manufactures would get their head out of their behinds and standardize hook sizes.

If I can't get to a bait shop before they close, we can make that deal

As for the original question, sharpening hooks.
Just use a simple stone, same one as for a knife.
Rub a few times and check, keep turning it.
It's easier than sharpening a knife.
