I think we're in the sweet spot of some of the less aggressive species, they are around but not in the numbers like down south. Plus there are plenty skates to eat.

Default Sharks and surfers

Welcome to the site.

Sharks have evolved over millions of years to eat certain foods (fish, skates, rays, dead things..) I'm sure the type that normally cruise Delmarva waters instinctively shy away from us and go for the croakers and other smaller fish. A few that I have eaten have had several croakers in the belly.

People have asked me many times on the beach if I was scared or nervous out there. I just reply that we (humans) are not on their menu and leave it at that. I hope I'm right.

Now, I'm sure there are larger, more aggressive sharks out there such as bulls, tigers and as rare as it may be, could pose a threat. It would be interesting to do some research and figure out how many "attacks" have occurred over the past 20 years or so. I'm sure we would be surprised to find that the accidental "stingray step upon" causes more pain each year than any shark bite.

Another question I often pondered is kind of a tricky one: How many shark attacks go unreported to the general public (outside of the EMS and OC town officials) ? Florida doesn't seem to have a problem reporting them, so I doubt this is an issue.

Default sharks

It is funny you say that becouse my buddy was attacked or what ever you want to call it on 9th street june july 03 I have pic's I will try to get them up. When beach patrol finally came to take a look after the oc paper was there they said ow it was just a blue or a rock no biggy LOL it must be in the trainning... just playing. The samething happend in 05 when I was surfing in SC a women was attacked an had half her calf ripped off like 150 feet from me. The bad part is I asked before I started surfing if any sharks have been seen or spoted in the area in the past few days an nope they laughed I always ask even in oc anyway after the women was taken away they said it was from a broken glass bottle

Charks don't like Yankee blood.....
nuff said!

It's really pretty simple, the more people in the water and the longer the surfing/swimming season, the more bites.
