Default getting dropped

Call it what you will, getting dropped, pickup and drop, run and done, knockdown...etc. If you read my report from Thursday you saw that I had a good hard knockdown with clicker on my near rod before getting another pickup and stick on the next rod less then minute later. I have to think this was the same fish since nothing was really going on and my baits were probably 30 yards apart.

Both rods had the same exact weight and terminal gear with only one difference. The near rod had a fresh out of the cooler (frozen due to great packing job by phil) head on it, only out about 2 mins and the next in line had a re-casted head that at that point had been out about 20 minutes. I rarely if ever re-cast a bait, if I go through the trouble of bringing it in I usually put something fresh on there.

I haven't had this happen often (2 or 3 times) so I really don't know all the theories as to why it happens so I want to get some in put from the guys who've experienced it. My theory on this one is that the head was ice cold when picked up and that's why it got dropped.

Also it seems like the stripers I've caught the past two weeks will actually pick up the bait and eat it right there instead of a suicide run like a drum or shark. Hooks are coming in clean and I'll get a good bounce followed by nothing until they run unless I'm johnny on the spot and pull tight after the bump. Is this typical for stripers? Haven't done it much from the surf, in the bay you just yank their lips off when you feel a hit.

Ben,

this is very interesting. I packed the fish with plenty of ice and salt and they do kinda freeze. I like the salt when you are heavy on bait and you don't want it to spoil. Very possible that fish picked up a cold/frozen head and didn't like it. I will be fishing again this weekend and will pay attention to it. I may take a few bunker out and let them thaw a bit before throwing them. I don't really have any experience with this but I can see your point about the frozen head.

Another possible option is to not use salt when the weather is cool. I do not know what others do. How about it guys???

We all need to know - that's the problem. Wish someone had an answer!

Hmm, maybe thats why I can't catch any fish -- too much ice in the cooler.

If I only go out for, lets say 9-10 hours I dont even bother with ice, and never had prob with bait gettin soft, although my cooler does have a permanent horrible stench of dead fish. Last summer I did have a lot of dropped shark though, good fight for say 10-45 seconds, then line goes totally dead.

Ben, I wouldn't worry about it much. I would think that the head would thaw in a minute or too. JMHO.
