Default Fishing reports for May 1-7

Hit the beach this evening after a bad day at work and fished from 6:30 - 11:00. A lotta skate . They were hitting in shifts. We would catch them solid for 10 minutes or so and then nothing for half an hour.... Was able to manage one doggie and two blues. My friend Nate caught the big blue. Nice evening on the beach and a good end to a bad day.

Nice blue - I can't wait to get back to the beach to see what I can catch. I spent a few hours in the Pocomoke again yesterday. Had a nice bass on - but once again, he got off before I got him in the kayak. I think I'm taking a net with me today. I'm getting tired of this wind. I hope it dies down for the Fling!

I've only caught blues at night in the inlet. I think they are more light sensitive.

Fished AI today, 5/2. Was expecting strong 15-20 kt winds sw then w. Never materialized and about 10:30 hardly a breath of air was moving. Nats started to move in but a gently south/south east breeze kept em back in the dunes. Bright sun and clear blue skies from about 10:00 until 3:00. Started out with cut bunker and bunker heads on fish finder rigs. Before I could get my third rod out I had two skates. Not good. Ended up switching all four rods over to mullet rigs and it helped alot with keeping the skates away although not 100%. I was also aware that my chances of catching the large rock I was hoping to find were next to nil. Same for the black drum. Oh well, blues are more fun than skates. Ended up with two in the box and missed a half dozen others. You would think with two hooks in the bait the hook-up rate would be good but not for me. Also managed a 30 in spiny. About 10 skates. Also forgot the camera so the only shot I got was just prior to surgery. It feels like the fishing could bust open anytime. Good luck.

It was a full moon and was very bright out last night, so bright we didn't even need glow sticks. Don't know if that may have had something to do with it or not. Both blues were caught between 9:30 & 10:00 as the tide was going out.

Javier and I were also out yesterday, arrived around 2pm stayed till 11. two blues hits but by the time I got to the rod, bait was cleaned off. Nothing till dark then it was skate central. The moon light did keep things awfully bright out. javier and I had about 7 skate each

Default bluefish

Good fishin!! I have heard that Bluefish aren't the tastiest fish in the world.....and haven't had any of them. I usually give them to an older couple across the hall from us. I know they are good bait however. Do you guys eat the blues....and if so, how do you prepare 'em?

They do have a strong taste - but that isn't necessarily bad! There are many ways to prepare them to "smooth out" their flavor. My favorite recipe uses oregano to soften the flavor a bit, but there are other ingredients that have the same effect. Also, if you remove the darkest of the meat (the dark line down the center of the filet) you'll end up with a more mild dish.

Do a search under the "cookin" them up threads, and I think you'll find a few recipes to try.
