Default Surf Casting 3/31

Well, I mad a ton of progress in my hatteras cast conversion yesterday. Started out getting 80-90 yards pretty easily then figured out how to get the power into the cast.

I'm going a hatteras because my previous happy gilmore did not translate onto the sand at all, especially waist deep in water. With a hatteras I can do it without moving my feet at all.

My final technique is this, and guys tell me if something is way off or if it's not really a hatteras anymore. I stand with my back facing the target at 12:00 with the rod positioned at about 8:30 and then start the swing. My swing will go slightly higher then the tip and then I start the cast swinging my left foot around to 12:00 and stepping into the cast. The enitre time after the swing my arms are fully extended until my left arm pull through at the finish. To get here I started going from 6:00-12:00 with the swing and cast but really added distance when moving to 9:00 and smothing down the loading. I was about to consistently hit 130 yards with a taped up 8oz and did uncork a few at 140 but it was not the norm. I really did well going to a 6oz and 2 oz setup to simulate weight and bait and toped out at 152 on that one, but consistently was just over 140. The 1502 I built will throw 8 pretty well but I think it tops out there for this style of casting. I have not tried any other rods and will do that Tuesday and report the results. I'm very happy with the fist try distance and hope to milk a few more yards out of it come spring run. I also had the problem in OBX of not being able to hold a wet spool when I brought the power in to the cast. Because my reels hold so much line I took about 50 yards off each and now only load the shocker wraps on the right side of the spool, hopefully this will help.

I did have a shocker knot get stuck on the way out and had my largest blow up to date. This was the only one of the day and it's just something that will happen from time to time I guess. In working with an 80 lb shock leader I think I will have to go to a 16mm tip top. The knot also bent a guide that I have to fix now.

Here are the rig and the blowup!

80 lb shock ??
thats the problem with it hanging up .
try a 50 lber ; i don't use anything larger than that and don't have a problem with the shocker breaking or the knot hanging up .

yeah I know derf, but I've broken 50lb every time out, several brands since I thought I got a bad batch. Guess that's why I have a hard time holding onto it when casting. I've thought about going to a braid shocker...how's that for weird.

10lbs for every ounce as prescribed seems to work best for me.

I've snapped it 10 ft from the bait , near the swivel, right at the knot...all over. This is practicing, not fishing a worn shocker.

I'll post a video ASAP, maybe I'm whipping it too much and the sudden jerk causes it to break...not sure. It seems pretty smooth now so maybe with the new cast I can go back to 50lb but with people and vehicles around I wouldn't feel safe...well I would, but I wouldn't feel safe for them:angel12: .

that might be the problem ....
when throwing a conventional you can't 'snap' it like with a spinning set-up .

I hope so derf, that should steal me some instant distance 50lb vs 80lb flying through the air.

I'm fishing 20lb and will likely keep it there this year since I just bought 3500 yards and I'm still getting good distance. I like it because I have a ton of confidence in fighting the bigguns. I don't fish enough to lose a nice fish.

when ya finish that line off , try the suffix tritanium in 17
it breaks at over 20 lb , but a lot thinner and more supple .
deb put this on the beach using 17 lb test ....

Pardon me Ben, but you made my day with the picture of the blowup.
That picture says so much, mostly four letter words.

If you don't get them, your not trying hard enough!

I did have it ordered from Tres but didn't get it in time to go to Ocracoke last week and I was drum fishin so I spooled up with 20 lbs ande, I think it breaks at 30!

I'm a big proponent of any fish being able to be landed on any line, I'll definitely go lighter when the opportunity arrises.

Got a couple more yards consistently yesterday but didn't throw less then 8oz. I think that 1502 has a 7nbait sweet tooth, put about 8 total on it and it really feels like home. I was hitting 140 just about everytime with a few 150-154 mixed in there. I want to get back to that 170 yd distance. If I can squeeze a couple yards out every practice session I'll be happy. My accuracy was much improved this time out as well. I set up so that a backstop was 170 yards away and tried to hit homeplate but was only able to get to the mound or just in front of it most of the time. It was good to have a target for a change! I still want to hear that loud BOOOOOONNNNNNGGGGGGGGG, when I finally nail the metal on the bottom of the backstop.

One thing I can pass along for those who don't practice much or at all, the more weight you have and the shorter drop you have the easier it becomes. With a 10oz I only used 18-24" but when I dropped to a naked 8 I could go 36-48" and with 6oz I could go even longer on my drops.

I need to toss my other rods though, its nice to toss the new nice one but I don't want to have one that can go FAR and 2 that go in the wash!
