If you're using a conventional, deadsticking in free spool with clicker on and you hear it starting to go out, please make sure you take it OUT of freespool before setting the hook. (that was more embarrassing because my diehard fishing buddy saw me do it) THAT birds nest took awhile to pick clean.

Mono-usually fairly easy to pick out. Braid-ditto in front of TV when wife has remote. You get the problem fixed and score brownie points for spending time with her yet NOT interupting her shows.

Not to hijack a thread but....(i'm gonna say it anyway) - is it solely the potential distance that you prefer conventionals for? Or are there other advantages?

I'm asking because as I progress in my casting skills I'm thinking of asking (ok, begging) the wife for a nice quality heaver setup - and might stick with a "long cast"
spinning (emblem pro, basia, etc) rather than a conventional . From what i've read, some of the long cast spinning reels on a nice rod can get pretty close to conventional distance (in a fishing environment and with proper technique of course) - I'm not looking to set any records - just want to cast far enough to hit where the fish are -and if spinning reels keep me fishing more and picking out birdsnests less - perhaps its the way to go for me and my limited casting ability....

SO- is it just the distance? Or is it something more? The feel of a conventional just better? I've neer took a walk on the dark side, so I'm not debating -I'm honestly just asking....

for me it's all worth it just to hear the clicker scream!

J/K up until magging my reels and really practicing I casted the rods about the same on sand, now with the mags I don't even get the spinners out of the car unless I need to replace a rod in the spread for some reason. I'm just keeping the spinners for backup and loaners now otherwise I'd convert them to conventional rods.
