This rule goes back to when you first learn to fish- you have to touch the fish in some manner to claim you actually caught it. I lost a nice blue in the wash as I was leaning to pick it out in the AI surf last Saturday. I told my wife that it was a good fight, but I did not actually catch it. Same rule applies here.

It's nobody's. You gotta release that fish and let him go. You hooked him and lost him and your friend didn't catch him either, he caught some fishing line. It's a draw and the fish wins.
