Happy New Year! Well it's January and it appears fishing is far from over as of the end of 2006. Still plenty of slammer blues in the surf and small stripers with still a few larger ones being caught. Water temps are around 50 and the 10 day outlook looks promising, with air temps in the upper 50's and lows well above freezing. With the weather predicted, water temps should stay around 50. So get your feet in the sand and GO FISH!

Looks like the Coastal Fisherman needs to rethink their schedule. Great job on the fish, everyone!

Hit the surf today and had a very productive day as far as ling goes. Caught 6 fat ling and could have caught a whole bunch more but just didn't have the right size hooks. They were all over the clam when I tossed them out. Managed 3 shorts, on clam also and lost one blue with bunker that bit threw my leader before landing. Also a mess of doggies and skates. A great start to 2007. BTW, anyone know the size regs for ling? I ended up releasing 3 and keeping 3 after a couple calls to the dnr and others but they had no idea. Iam assuming there is no size limit on ling.

Steve, sorry no pics, I was fishing for stripers and switched down in hook size after catching 1 and seeing nibbles on my clam on other rods, I switched down in hook size. I used a basic ff rig but plan on going out tomorrow and use a kingfish rig without the floats. I looked into their stomachs and all they had were shrimp and sand fleas. I know they eat cut bait but I am thinking they prefer something similar to what was in their stomachs. Probably why they were hitting the clam and hitting it often.

Scott,
I catch them on squid.

Steve, they were between 12" and 13" and was casting far but would think they would be in close too because of the sandfleas in their stomachs. I am not sure what size hook is on those kingfish rigs, but they are pretty small. The lings mouth looks much bigger than a kings when opened

Our ling aren't lingcod or even related to fish properly called ling. Ling is a local name for members of the hake family. Search for "red hake" or "spotted hake" the two species commonly called ling on the atlantic coast. I used to catch a lot of them in the winter at OBX on smaller bluefish rigs. Try a hook about the right size for a 1-3lb blue. I got a few last winter on king rigs but the smaller blue rigs are about right with or without floats. They take squid or clams quite well but won't hesitate to take small chunks of bunker or other fish.
I got a couple of blues in that blow on Monday. The southern beach was unfishable and I only saw two other anglers all day. Google "squirrel hake for an article that applies fairly well to either red or spotted hake. There are several species on the atlantic coast. They are a good eating fish (related to cod). They deteriorate rapidly and should be gutted, kept dry by putting them in a ziploc and iced immediately. Scott, I may be out this weekend with a couple of rods out for hake. Let me know if you're going out.

Wish I could go out, especially with the weather forecasted but I have to work the next 7 days. The only day I may be out is Monday and thats iffy. Just had the hake for dinner tonight. Excellent! I will be trying to catch these critters more often. If you haven't treid one, you are missing out. Excellent deep fried.
