Default Artificials, teasers, and how to work them

Hey all,
Quiet fall for me, a few big blues bagged, no Stripers yet. Anyway, I have seen some posts on artificial lures and am looking for some specific information on what each type is and does, and how they should be worked and rigged properly.

I am interested in using a rig composed of something that dives into the water about mid-level. I also would like to know how a teaser is properly used and how to rig this.

I've purchased some 4" shad with a 1/2 oz jig head, but I dont think I am working the lure properly. I dont know what it is supposed to do. Also, I bought another lure that sits on the top of the water and rattles when you reel in. Not sure how I am supposed to be using this either.

I've heard you do not attach these directly to your line but need to make a loop and attach with a barrel swivel?

I have not found any real juicy info on these topics here and am looking for some guidance. Thanks.

Steve
