Default clams in the surf

Ok, so how do you use clams in the surf, I have used them on a boat before, and tried them in the surf once or twice but I tend to see them go flying when i cast or even if they make it out there they don't seem to last very long at all. Any advice would be great

Always try to get fresh live sea clams, if you can't get fresh second choice is salted. last resort frozen, hook them through the tongue. Then I use small rubber bands, or elastic thread to secure them to the hook.
Hint get to know the fish monger at the local supermarket you might be able to get the soup clams he's getting ready to discard cheap the're not as big as sea clams. You can take them home and salt them for use later.
Salting = use a sturdy container make a strong salt brine using Kosher salt and water store in fridge

Go buy yourself some quahog/chowder clams,,,sea clams are hard to find in our area and chowder clams work as well,,,you will not catch less using chowders over sea,,,the chowder is a very large clam,,,use fresh and I garauntee they will not fly off,,,do not use frozen, I don't care if they are salted,,,I have bought frozen and guess what, no way that clam stayed on when I casted, they probably were not salted but with chowder clams so easily to get, why bother with the frozen stuff,,,if you have some left over after fishing go ahead and salt them,,,when you cast, you may see pieces come off but the majority of the clam is on there,,,I cast hard and if I have 1 fly off out of 50, thats alot,,,like erbby says, hook through the tongue and then once through the gut,,,then take whats hanging and start putting it on the hook,,,use smaller hooks that are thin gauged,,,I use 6/0 gammi circles and a whole clam covers the hook almost entirely,,,not a big deal with such a soft tissue like a clam,,,I also use a 2 hook fish finder rig when using clams and it works awsome, but must use a heavy leader when making like 80lb seagur flouro,,,works great,,,a pic below of a shoolie striper hooked on the rig.

Next time I see ya on the beach Oliver, I can show you,,,I will be using clams on half of my rigs and the other half with big bunker chunks,,,still like fresh bunker more, but is coming harder to come by of late,,,soon, clams will be all I am using,,,keep in mind, crabs are still out there,,,you will need to rebait much more often as opposed to a bunker chunk or head,,,doesn't take long for a crab to rip apart a clam,,,a downside to using clams now,,,you just have to fish harder.

Maybe a tip here to help with the clams staying on the hook. Chicken livers are great for catfish but are hard to stay on the hook. Some people use pantyhose and cut this into sections, wrap the clam in the hose and then hook as usual. It works well for livers.

The wife won't like this idea much when you start stealing her pantyhose.

The clams I got in NJ stayed on the hook very well - I'm guessing they were sea clams - and they were fresh - had to shuck them myself.

Stayed on the hoook without any rubber bands or anything (although some parts (i.e. the foot) of course were better to hook into than the softer tissue.

And - they worked! Got my first two (and only two ) stripers on clams - NEVER got one on a bunker chunk yet ...but I'll keep tryin...

Where around OC is a good place to get these so called clams ?

Do most of the tackle shops have them ? I only seen them frozen in squid like containers.

Try Waterman's Seafood on Rt 50 in West OC. I believe you can get 50 chowder clams for $10. (410) 213-1020

OC/AI area people -

Does anyone know if Harbor Tackle carries clams? If so, I'll be fine, but if not - I'll be arriving late night friday and fishing around 6am sat on - wondering where to get clams that'd be open late friday or early saturday. Is there a 24 hr place that'd have chowder clams? or a bait shop that has fresh sea clams?
