Default striper rig details

i was wondering what kinda rig everyones using on stripers. what do the experts recomend, lenght and test# of leader, hook knots, yada, yada.
what are peoples opinions the the 3 way swivel bottom rig setup vs a ff rig, or even a top and bottom rig or whatever other rig.

on my drum rigs i keep it as short as i can get it 2in, (thanks to a buddy sometimes i tie directly to shocker with no bite leader-works well). could i use 2in for striper as well?

i like to keep the leader as short as possible. this is my striper rig.

100# rosco swivel uni to 4-6 inches of 60# fluorocarbon snelled to a 8/0 owner circle. then a hd fish finder behind the swivel on my shocker.

I think what you're using is fine. FYI I use 30# power pro to a 40# shock leader (with a shock leader knot) to a black swivel (improved clinch)attached to 60# florocarbon to a #8 snelled circle book. My leaders are a little longer than most, probably 4-6 inches and maybe a little longer in some cases.

I think you are too short and too heavy.

40# test is plenty
6/0 or 8/0 hook
18" leader.

I don't use a FF. all I do is place my weight on a three way swivel and take my leader off the other useing 80# mono to a # 8/0 hook about 4 to 6 in. most of the time sometimes I use up to about 8 to 10 in. leader.

Eugene,

Here is my latest striper rig. I can attest that it works great for sharks

Now I run mono all the way so make adjustments to fit your style.

17# Suffix Tritanium mainline
40# shock leader (enough to wrap 4 times around the spool)

I use a spider hitch to no-name to connect the main and the shock.

(30-40 inches of) 80# bite leader/fish finder.
I spider hitch the 40# and no-name it to the 80#.

Before I attach the shock and bite leader
I attach (snell or palomar knot) a large 10/0 - 15/0 circle hook to the 80# then I thread on a fish finder or lock swivel for the sinker then I add a bead.

This gives you 30-40 inches of play in your FF rig and makes for an aerodynamic cast. I use large bunker heads on this type of setup. Dem stripers have huge mouths!

great infos!! cygnus im alil confused about the last part of your rig. so if i got it right you have snelled hook, ff, the bead, then the line joining knot. so the ff sits on the hook when it held up? do you have a pic of it. no swivel? thanks so far to everyone.. btw, is a short bite lead not recommended? a buddy taught me to just eliminate the bite lead all together for drum...is that not recommended for stripers

yea would love to see pics of different types of Surf rigs that you all use. DO the ones that you use for blues work for the Bass as well? Is the whole Metal leader thing a myth (Rocks don't like metal leaders). WHen do floats come in the picture? Are they for Rocks or Blues........Would love to see some pics of the rigs.Tanks

I have had success with a fireball rig....the 40' I caught last month actually took both hooks. I usually throw one head on a ff and another ff with a chunk or clam and then a fire ball with chunks or clams or both(usually put the clam on top so it lasts longer)

no pics handy right now, but they're your basic store-bought bluefish rigs - basically a hi-lo rig with round floats just above the hooks.

Default Fireball rig

Here is the basic fireball rig. It is also available with one larger float (with one hook). Easy rigs to make too. You can use wire or heavy mono (80 lb+).

Default Rigs

When I fished up in Deleware all I used was a single float rig. Tied it up like FF rig and put a tiny split shot on it to stop it from floating up to far.
Now since on AI for them Stripers I have learned some new rigs, FF with the shortest possible leader 1-2 inch 50 to 80 lb test, no beads the knot connected to the ff rig will keep it from overlapping. I also use a high low rig it is considerably harder to cast but it has proved effective especially when you are using 2 different baits ( clams and bloodworms or bunker fillets ) On this rig I do not use floats. I try to keep it as simple as possible.
