Question Casting Distance

I just started using a baitcaster and been practicing casting on a local soccer field. I'm throwing an 8oz sinker 63 yards average (measured). Pole is a 10' heavy teamed with a Abu 7000 and 65# Suffix braid.
Is that good distance???

it's far enough to catch fish and that is all that matters. you will increase your distance when you get a better technique and get addicted and buy the best stuff. wind will also effect how you cast and use a lighter sinker if it will hold, that will help as well.

Thanks Pier Man like I said just started using a baitcaster so for practice I figured a 8 oz weight would kinda equal a 5oz + bait The method I have been using is called the off the beach cast

It is far enough to get you started and into fish!!!!! I have been throwing conventional this year, it takes awhile to get comfortable with it. Pay attention to how others do it and keep heaving! You will add more distance as you go. In my view conventional is the way to go in the surf!!!

You will lose at least 25 percent, maybe more in distance by throwing weight and bait as opposed to just weight.

Agreed. Bait does not just add weight but adds resistance/friction. I started conventional this year as well. I have yet to measure my distance but my confidence has grown considerably. I used to be so concerned about the birds nest ... now I am just concerned about fishing. Conventionals are the best for the surf!

I have never measured any of my cast and I want to but I don't have anywhere around here (no. VA) to really do so. I would suggest going to a feild and practice as much as you can, to better simulate a 8nbait situation you can cut open a racketball and insert the sinker, it is also safer to do that and that is how I do it here at home in case of a breakoff I don't want it flying off and hitting a car, house or even worse, a person. remember when it fluffs up, don't thumb the middle of the line, that can make it worse, thumb on the edge of the spool. let us know how your progress goes.

Yup, I can't agree with this more.....with just weight, I can cast over 100 yds, but I know good and well I'm not hitting the same distance with bait added to the mix....but as long as its out where the fish are, I'm happy.

When actually fishing I use the Breakaway Far-Out rig which holds the hook and bait near the sinker till it hits the water. so they are not flapping like a traditional 3 way set up. Breakaway claims a 30% increase in distance when using their complete terminal set=up

I'll have to get some of those. Anything to help get a little farther out!
