Exclamation Fishing etiquette at night

There are a few things different about fishing for drum and stripers (fall fishing in general). Lights spook drum and Stripers. Some people don't believe this, but others swear by it. With my luck, I don't like to take the chance.

If you are driving past someone (especially down south) try hard not to point your headlights towards the water. Use your low beams when in sight of anyone fishing.

If you are fishing with a buddy, make sure it is okay with them to use lanterns, fires or other lights. Try not to look at the water with your headlight on unless necessary. You want the area you are fishing to be as natural as possible. These fish have very sensitive eyes and get spooked very easily.

Thanks and good luck!

Very good post Sam, I learned the hard way that you never use your headlights as Lights on the beach. One of my very first night trips to Hatteras several years ago, I left the headlights on while I was tying everything up and getting ready to go, a guy from about 150 yards down the beach walked over and asked me to turn them off, and explained it spooked the fish, I turned them off and used a flashlight to finish rigging. About 2 hours later I heaved my First Hatteras Striper from the surf at 36" 19.5lbs and had another one on that snapped the line about 20 min later....If for any reason the lights are on, they go off as quickly as possible.

I hate lights. Sam and I had someone park 1/2 mile down with their lights shining up the beach. I drove down told them to shut them off.

Sam, remember that scene... I should have had my Xanax before hand.

When you got back, I was afraid to light my cigar in fear of getting smacked in the face!

we used red lights a lot in the navy... I think that may be optimal for those who feel they need a light source.

I"ll leave the new truck at home at night and take the old one - That will solve the problem. But thanks for all the info on night fishing it will ( I hope ) prove to be helpful in landing the BIG one.

Wagonmaster, you do bring up a good point. I do know a lot of the newer trucks do have the daytime running lights that you can't turn off without going in and doing some tweaking. My point is, just try not to shine any lights out on the water while setting up near a fellow fisherman.

from what I understand it isn't the light its self but it is the flashing of the light and the moving of the light. drum get caught around lights on the piers at night at times. my headlamp also has a blue light that acts like a black light, it illuminates light colors which is really cool. it doesn't spook and fish but will damn near light up the sky if I shine it on chartruse or yellow line.

Default Great Topic

Lights on a NC beach can get you in invite back to Yankee country. I believe safety is a priority while driving along the surf line but at least kill the lights within a 100 yards of another party. Better yet, scope the beach out and get planted before sunset. Of course, take the upper lane when exiting. I always use a lantern when shark fishing and don't think it makes a difference. After all, the headlights are on when we're yakking the baits out for obvious reasons, especially on moonless nights. Nothing beats your eyes after they have been acclimated. I used to drive my boat all over the bay and ocean without any lights on at all. The bowlight obliterates the ability to see in the darkness. I do not condone this practice but Randy would probably agree. You can't go wrong keeping it as natural as possible, we need the odds in our favor!

No lights for me!!!! Most times out it is actually pretty bright out if you don't use lights you get used to it. If I need to tie a rig or bait up I turn my headlamp on and face AWAY from the water. Also I have a headlamp with a a red bulb. Doesn't seem so bright.

Most times I am out there in total darkness except for those times I use the headlamp (pointing away from the water) and the light sticks.

I night fish in fresh water and NEVER use lights. NEVER!!!!

I am positive it makes a difference in freshwater since I am in a boat and will spook fish, not sure if it makes a difference at the beach BUT why take the chance.

Fishing for Reds in FL we hang a lantern off the bridge just over the water. It attracts the shrimp and the Reds come in to tear up the shrimp. We would toss all around the edges and really get into the Reds.
Guess some fish are different but personally I haven't done worse with a light.
