Alright -- I'm coming down to OC next week for family vacation. While there, I'm trying out one of my heavier spinning rod for sharks. The question.... Living in northern MD, I'm having some trouble getting terminal tackle at local stores to prep for my trip. While at a store yesterday, I saw packs of wire leaders which had a swivel on one end and a snap lock on the other... Has anyone here ever tried tying their shock leader (w/fishfinder rig on shocker) to the swivel and then attaching their hook to the snap lock on the other end of the wire leader ? If so...is it just a waste of time or will it do in a pinch (on a light shark -- not expecting it to hold on a 5/6 footer) Not sure if snap will come undone in the heat of the moment... This setup is going to have to do until I get down there and get some wire rigs made up at a local store.... I've never crimped line / leader before and don't have the tools. Just looking for some opinions ??? Thanks, Excalibur |

I agree...
Stop at Bass Pro in Arundel Mills. If you come down 95 from near Baltimore take rt 100 east (exit 43) for a few miles. Go to the far right back corner near the huge fish tank. The Malin wire is on that wall to your left. Get some #12 ($7.49) and also some 250# line. It's just to the left and looks white, (maybe 12 bucks?). Then go 2 rows behind you, in the middle of the row (facing the side you came from) you'll find a 3"X2" blue & yellow container marked "Du-Bro E/Z Twist Tool". It's $13.99. Ok, got that? Go one row back and grab some 12/0 J hooks, they're near the back end of the row, about waist high. They're called Mustad Sea Demon. Look to the right where they have the two-packs of hooks and grab a few circle hooks. They're like $1.79 for two 16/0's. Now go one more back and face the other way for some inexpensive barrel swivels, (250# test, maybe 20 of 'em). The black Ocean Master brand will do, they're near the bottom of the shelf. Alright, need a map??? Now you'll have the fixins to make your own! Be sure you have good line on your reels because these Charks will test it..... For setting up the rigs, go to the "Extreme Fishing/Beach Sharking" forum and read up.....

Those are some explicit directions !!!
Thanks to everyone for all the input. I'll see if I can convince 'the boss' to head over to BPS on our way down (we're going VERY early to beat the bridge traffic). Otherwise, I'll get the supplies once I'm down in OC. Just found out there's been a shipping delay w/ a new 12' Tica I ordered for trying out on sharks...I have the matching reel but no rod as of yet. Not sure if my 10' Okuma is up for the challenge... Hopefully the rod will meet up w/ me once I hit OC -- Crossing my fingers !!! Thanks again, Excalibur |

I thought about that but I'm dealing w/ someone 1:1 -- not a big box. The guy's been pretty straight w/ me so far so I'm just going to wait it out. He just got screwed up by his distributor (they failed to include my rod in his order) He even offered to ship me an 11' loaner.
Worst case, I throw the new reel on my 10' and give a try.... Anyhow, brighter side is I'll have all my gear for this fall Thanks, Ex |

From your post, I see you're talking about doing wire and 250 lb mono...
Is this the sequence ? [Hook] -- haywire twist -- [wire] -- haywire twist -- [swivel] ??? 250 lb mono ??? -- shock leader. Questions: 1) How are you attaching the 250 lb mono to the swivel that's at the end of the wire leader ? (knot, crimp, etc ?) 2) Are you threading a fish finder on the 250 lb mono ? 3) How are you attaching the 250 mono to the shocker (using a knot or do you have another swivel in there...) Just trying to picture the setup... Thanks, Ex |
