Went out last night for a few hours with a couple friends. Steve, Jim and Sterling had never been surf fishing before. Not much action, but it was nice to sit aroun a fire and talk a while. At least now they have the know how to go out there and get skunked just like me!

Went out last night in complete insane conditions ,,,driving wind, rain, and sand,,,fished from 7 until 10 but the lightning had me a little concerned and the blowing sand was driving me crazy so I packed it in,,,was lightning the entire time I was out there,,,it was dark last night,,,I mean pitch black,,,the only light was from the lightning and waves washing up on the beach,,,green little sparkles of light below my feet,,,no fish.

Fished AI Sunday and Monday and punted today due to the weather. Lot of fish in the surf Sunday night and it was nice weather for this time of year. Got a couple of short stripers that were almost all white in color. I guess they are very pale due to the cloudy water.

Lots of red hake, horse croakers, large spiney dog fish, smooth dogfish, and no skates. We only fished till 10:00 PM Sunday night and it sounds like some nice fish were caught in the wee hours Monday morning.

Oh well, would-a could-a should-a.

There was a fair amount of fire in the surf Sunday night you could see the fire as fish moved in the first slough.

It also looks like a good bit of the structure is filling in on the island.

I had hoped that this would be the week for us, but from the reports up north is sounds like some of the big ones have not come down yet.

I just about froze tonight. A few skates, and many big spiney doggies. One of those suckers stuck me in my hand, but it didn't have the same effect that a ray does (THANK GOD). Tough fishin tonight. Hopefully back out next week.

Steve,

We caught the hake on chunks of bunker once they had a chance to suck some of the meat out and reduce the size of the bait. I have also heard that they like squid. You are on the right track: smaller hooks and smaller baits. Lots of them are very small and we happened to catch some bigger ones by waiting until they moved the sinker. It is amazing that we caught as many as we did on the large hooks we were using.

Fished in the sand and action seemed to be every where today,,,caught 2 croakers, 1 32" striper, and one striper came unglued,,,Guy up about 500 yards was slaying the stripers,,,he had 5 and 1 blue,,,many were 30" + fish,,,heard others caught today as well,,,perfect conditions, east winds and very fishy water,,,I had nothing fresh so I used clams all day. Nice to see some action up the beach and got into a little bit myself,,,a great day! Cant wait to get back out there again.

Default Action

Glad to hear you had some action! Man, I have had the flu for the last 36 hours... This has been a tough fall! I am happy to see someone catching. Especially the croaker. Try top bottom rigs with squid. Usually tears them up!

Sam, used top and bottom rigs when I fish with clams,,,probably could have caught more but was using large hooks,,,had some tugs, just couldnt connect with the large hooks,,,lasted maybe an hour just after sunrise.

one of the two croakers

this striper was like a 32" torpedo,,,very slim but gave a great fight,,,thought it was much bigger.
