But I'll start it off with this....Couple thanksgivings ago I rented a house on the OBX for the long weekend to try for some Stripers, well it was a slow weekend....I had two seagulls fly into my line, the first one was tangled so bad we had to cut the line before we could get it off, so I pulled the line in and what was there but a 31" striper, about 15 min later another seagull flew into my line, got tangled but this one I managed to pull off without breaking the line, but decided to check the bait anyhow, and what was there but a 25" Striper.....So the stripers weren't strange, and honestly neither were the seagulls, but combine the two and that is strange

A yellowfin(I know doesn't sound strange) but I caught it one piece at a time..... I was fishing on Stinky beach early this summer testing out the new conventionals and one piece at a time I pulled in the carcass of a yellowfin

Default Sea Gull

This one wasnt me it was my grandmother. She casted her line off the oceanic pier it caught a seagull and wrapped around the body a few times. He put up a hell of a fight before we cut the line.

I've heard of guys catching bats while fly casting, I'm guessing that's what happened to Trowpa.

I've caught the standards, turtles/snakes etc. The weirdest I heard of was huge Owl. The guy was fishing top water at night and out of no where the owl scooped in and grabbed his plug, said it had a 5 ft wingspan. It luckily got off the hook in the final 5 ft with maybe only a hurt talon.

Ok - quick explanation of the bat and some other fly fishing experiences

fishing late in the evening - if anyone here does freshwater fishing during evening hatches, you know how the birds and bats tend to swoop down along the water and try to pick off the same bugs the fish are eating....

Well - once a bat swooped down and grabbed my fly ...didn't hook him though (thankfully - would hate to attempt that hook removal!).

Same thing happened a mallard duck who decided my fly must be something good to eat -unfortuanatlely , my hook did get stuck into his bill....he stayed stuck for what seemed like an eternity with all kinds of quacking wing flapping and splashing with all his little duck friends freaking out around him until the hook finally pulled out.

Another night, I saw a trout and a bird go for the same mayfly (not my fly - but a real bug). Wish I had a high speed camera for that sight!! Not sure who actually got it, but it was pretty cool to see.

hmmm, guess mine would have tobe a 23' Checkmate many, many years ago was fishing off the dock at the old White Marlin Marina and catching quite a few Sea Trout when this @#$%*&^% comes blasting by the fuel dock just after sunset. yup, caught my lure 'n line in his prop....I yelled but to no aval and he spooled me in seconds...boy was I pissed:icon_twisted:

also snagged or caught a snake up at Liberty once, couldn't tell how or what kind it was as I HATE SNAKES and just cut the line also caught a Brown Pelican down off Islamorada too while pitchin' live baits to Sailfish

however, I once got caught in the left ear by a friend casting a #3 Mepps, would have left it in place but not only was it the wrong ear but was before ear rings were OK on guys

Wern't you in the Coast Guard, that almost qualifies as a sailor... you could have gotten away with an earing even then.......

Actually, If I remember correctly, the american eel is the exact opposite of all other fish that migrate up rivers to spawn...I read an article that says they actually migrate out of freshwater and into the ocean to spawn. I could be completely wrong on that, but as I said, I seem to remember reading that somewhere. Typically waters that you would fish for catfish also have the american eel in it.

yep - when fishing for Catfish in the delaware (PA) - eels are like Skates in surf fishing - nuisances and all over the place!

Yeah, I knew I'd read that they migrate back from freshwater back out to the ocean to spawn somehwere.....That wasn't it, but it says the same thing. The article I read I think actually talks about it being the only fish that does a reverse spawn like that.
