Default Kind of a dumb question...

I was just curious if it is possible to catcha porpoise off the beach. I figure with yakking out baits and stuff it could happen. Has anyone ever caught one?

Your line would disappear faster then you could blink. That, and they are very smart creatures, I've only heard of a few people offshore hooking them inadvertently. That being said it would be damn cool to have it happen.

Hmmm - never heard of it happening, but they're always cruising past me (or are they mamal dolphins - never can keep that straight...) while I'm fishing...many times as close as I can cast! So you'd think it might happen one day, but I bet they're smart enought not to eat a bait...plust they're after LIVE fish....

Stranger things have happened - I've caught mallard ducks, turtles, seaguls, plastic bags, sea shells, horshoe crabs, and almost a bat once! - so you never know....

they would spool you in an instant...they are incredibly more powerful than a shark (which is hard to believe) and they are also very intelligent, so the chances of them purposley trying to eat the bait is very unlikely. If one did get hooked, they would probably use thier brains ans figure out a way to get the hook out......the charkies dont really have that mindset.

yeah, like Ben stated. I've been fishing offshore since @1969 and have never heard of anyone hookin' one even-though they are caught right beside Marlin and Tuna, chasing the same baits I have to believe they are just too smart to take a hook'n bait

Believe it or not, happened to me,,,saw a group swimming down the trough and hooked into one on my 535,,,don't think she hit the bait but somehow got snagged,,,took all the line in a matter of seconds,,,saw her jumping and running hard,,,heard it happen to another in the surf,,,if I didnt see the porpoises swimming down the trough, I would of doubted that explanation.

I don't think one would bite a hook on porpoise.

In all seriousness, I think my dad hooked into one 2 summers ago. We saw them come in VERY close (30-50 yards) and dad's reel screamed for 20 seconds and then "POW" snapped it near the spool.

I saw a pod surfing in FL and a nearby line (not mine) instantly spooled.
I think it snagged it.
Yeah, you'll never hear a spool make that noise until one of those criters gets into it.

Do you guys think it's better to lock the reel down and break the line when you know you are going to be spooled? That's how I usually handle it, just wondering.

I would, why waste time and line fighting it. get your gear back, put on somemore line 'n lure and get your bait(s) back in the water. I know some years ago durring the WMO we had a @350lb Blue Marlin on a 50 (and about to be spooled) and since Blues didn't pay top $$ and we were in 3 of the White Calcuta's, we cut him(or her) off and went back to fishing for whites

ok, I'm not one to give up on a feesh but in some cases it's better to limit the amout of mono in the water. I lock it down and hope it fails at the knot.
