fishaholic, sounds to me your going to have to drop the tranny, I have a 96 explorer and the same thing happened, had to drop the tranny to repair it. I hope I am wrong but either way it is real expenive, cost me 2400 and I removed the tranny and reinstalled it. The older model explorers especially 96 were prone to tranny failure, due to ford setting the shift points on the electronic tranny way to light to give a smooth ride, unfortunatley your tranny will wear out prematurely, if you get it fixed get a performance chip and set the tranny shift points a little later, it will give you a firm shift that you will feel but it will also prevent it from happening again.
