Default glow sticks on bait

any one ever tried it? I was thinking of lighting up either my chum or my actual bait. It'll attract baitfish but so will the chum so maybe it's pointless.

Will it scare Charky?

Since you'll have chum - what about something that rattles - I hear sharks are attracted to unusual sounds???

Use to hang a gas lantern off of low bridges at night in FL to attract Shrimp.
Not only did the Shrimp swarm to the light but the Redfish showed up too.
But... The Reds stayed toward the outer fringes of the light and picked off the Shrimp. It was rare that a Red would come into the full light.

It wouldn't hurt to try it, even in the daylight...
Unknown results....

yup, what Steve said when night fishing either in the CB or in back bay of OC, I've tied several light sticks together in a "daisy chain" to attract bait fish and it works

Default This is how the pros do it:

I employ a 30 year waterman who tells me to try using a light stick on the shark bait as an attractant. He states that when he would run a 3 mile line for tuna, he would rubber band a light stick near the bait as an attractant and when the tuna was hooked, it would pull free and float to the surface. If the stick was tied on, most tuna were eaten by sharks aided by the light and the stressed tuna vibes. Then he added when he would long line for Mako, they always deployed the light sticks. Well I guess it wouldn’t hurt to implement his tactic so see if it improves results. I think the floating light sticks would be a nifty sight in the offshore darkness. A sign to say guess who was knockin at the door? I'll try it and see. It will give me an excuse if I go hitless and the reason for a pickup. Can't loose either way...

You know what would be cool... To put a white balloon with a lightstick in it tied to a 12' mono line attached to your leader swivel. You could see where your bait was at night and if old sharky hits it, it goes down!

OBG-
Giving away all the Offshore Secrets!!!

LOL!

I agree 100% with OBG and Randy. Glow sticks WORK and are effective offshore when sharking and/or chunking for tuna. You should see the Large floating sticks for swords. They are SWEET!

Someone also mentioned about lighting. Lighting up the cockpit of your boat while fishing at night will attrack other small fish and squid which will also attract Larger Fish... IE: Sharks, tuna. I've snagged some dolphin too.

I've been on a boat my entire life- I know ZIP about surf fishing. So, I wouldn't know if it would work.
IMO - (I may stick my foot in my mouth here) but, I would think it's the same principal.

well guess we're just going to have to try it, I got several of the large offshore ones in green, blue & red. I say they should work, after all ther is natural luminescence/phosphorus in the ocean water. if you ever been offshore at night, you can sea it in the prop-wash and comming off of fish like contrails off a fighter jet, pretty cool looking

TOO EZ this waterman knows more about anyone from the University of Delaware's Marine Science Department. Some of the stuff he comes up with are unimaginable from the sex life of crabs to beautiful Christmas tree decorations made from aquatic species. I guess living on the water for so long will teach you something. It did teach him 30 years is enough back breaking work and it's time to get an "landside" job.
