Default frehwater fish as bait in the ocean

Has anyone tried using bluegill or sunfish as bait for shark? Thought I'd ask since I have a place where you are guarenteed a bucketfull every time.

Try Carp...easy to catch (usually) big enough to make some good chum and use hunks for bait.

bluegill and sunfish are pretty small and probably won't stay on the hook. I wouldn't kill em just for sharkin. We can get (and I do believe Steve is getting some) bunker, which is very oily, stinky and bloody when fresh. Plus, you kind of want to "match the hatch" when fishing the ocean.

I'll be chucking big dead bunker tonight since I won't get there in time to hit the docks...hoping for the best.

That's kinda what I thought, just wanted to see if anyone has tried. It would be intresting to see what you'd catch though.

It might be harder to catch bunker than it is to buy them. They don't bite a hook, so you need to cast a gang hook in a school of them to snag one.

we use a Sabiki Bait rig in the bay, I have Barb all set-up wth one when we go live bait fishing and she usally catches a few one day her little Zebco 99 and 6' Rhino rod was doubled over and screaming, almost got ripped outa' her hands as she had 3 good size bunker on and they all took-off in different directions
