Default Set up a new rig for sharkin

Just got done making my first setup for sharkin. I got a new diawa spinning reel and 10' st. croix rod. Put about 350 yds of 50# braid followed by 15' of 50# mono. Then put about 5' of 100# mono for a rub leader. For the rig i used 2' of heavy coffee colored wire and a 10/0 j hook. I used the 50# mono as a shock leader because i didnt like tying 50# braid right to 100# mono. Hopefully she holds together and i can get some moderate action casting for some toothies.

Sounds good - welcome to the "casting club" - if you're there on the 28th we can see what strategies cast best, which get cut off the easiest, and experiment.

Last week I had 150# mono leader and hoped that would be enough.....unfortunately it wasn't, I had sharks rub right through it. Ended up going up to 400#

Jeff- where'd you get the 400 # mono? I live in the middle of trout country and in driving distance to bass country - i get strange looks asking for saltwater gear - even stranger when I ask about shark sized gear....and any store near me would laugh me out of the place if I even asked for 300 or 400 lb test...

I'll look around the internet and see if I can get some heavier stuff delivered quickly - any recommendations for quick (and cheap) shipping?

Just checked BPS - heaviest I see is 150 for regular mono. They have this "Halyard" stuff that's 400lb and black - is that the stuff you used?

Cabelas carries 300 and 400, but the 400 is on back order - I'll have to go with the 300 :( better than the 100 i have now i guess

I get 480# cable from West Marine. It is in the "sailboat rigging" section of the store. What you want is 1/16th cable. You can get crimping sleeves there too.Double sleeves are the best.Makes a primo shark rig.
In a pinch, weedeater line is ok for a rub line, but you gotta have some fairly heavy metal cable or wire at the hook end to tangle with a big Shark...120# coated wire etc. won't hold up.I have been meaning to try clothsline cable and/or garage door cable from the building supply place...seems like it would work too.

Sam/Randy - I've put some 250lb on order from shark river -worried that the 400 couldn't be knotted well (and i don't have crimping stuff). We'll see if that works. But Randy, if you pick up some 400lb at akes, could I buy 4-5ft or so after my 3rd "rub off"??
