Exclamation Ocean Kayak Safety

Ok, enough questions are coming in that a yak safety thread is needed.
Feel free to post do's and don'ts, methods, equipment and tactics.

Ya'll fill in the rest.
I'll start it off with:

1. Always wear a USGC Approved PFD.
2. Carry an audible signal device.
3. At night, carry a visible signal device.
4. Keep your alcohol intake low or zero.
5. Have a person in sight on shore with appropriate signal devices.
6. Secure all weights and hooks before going out.

All good tips.

After Friday night I, think we should be alot more careful. on a lighter note we should all rig our trucks with a security device like in that Pathfinder comercial. the guy lost in the fog in his yak and he hits the panic button on his keys, and his truck starts going off.

I just got a strobe light to carry on my PFD, it has a 3mile range. Hope I never have to find out how good it works. Also picked up a divers knife to cut lines if I have to.

I just throw the weight, cable leader, hook, and bait in the back of the yak,,,when the surf is big, I put the hooks into the eyes that are on the yak,,,I do two at a time.

That was the night we were yaking out in pea soup and I got rolled and had to swim the yak in cause I couldn't see the waves untill they were ontop of me and Sam ended up 1/4 mile down the beach the wrong way. And Coop don't you just hook the bait into your leg?

Nope,,hasnt happened yet, but I have a remedy for that,,,pick up some aquarium line, cut it in 1" increments and slide it over the hook,,,make sure the tubing is very snug,,,I guess you may need to take the hook that you will be using to the aquarium store to find the right size,,,should give you some protection should you get rolled in the surf.

The second day I was yakking out baits the surf had picked up quite a bit, I was attempting to yak out over 6' waves the water inside was turbulent so it was hard to stay straight only to be at the wrong angle at the last minute when the larger waves hit and ended up very wet. I also learned that once the waves get to a certain size, paddling out a tandem as a single doesn't work too well, I will defenitely not try that again, I just had way too much weight in the back of the yak and there were times I was almost perpendicular. If I hadn't been perfectly straight on those waves or even the slightest bit unbalanced in the yak I would've gone over. Also note should be taken that a Rip loves to flip a kayak....I learned that the hard way

yeah trust me, they look even bigger when you're paddling up the face of them too......stormy weather offshore created the big surf.....surfers everywhere......Not gonna hijack, but that brings up a good point just because the weather is great onshore it doesn't mean that everything is going to be fine......Offshore seriously impacts what actually happens on the beach
