Default I know I've been quiet

Ok so yeah yeah yeah, I know I've been really quiet, and slaking in my duties over here on the Freshwater Board. But in my defense normally I get out all winter long either for stripers on Lake Anna or Catfish on the James. Due to boat issues (steering cable was frozen) I didn't get out on the fresh as much this past year. But the good news is that the boat is fixed and I've already had it out to test. The bad news there is that the cranking motor had enough juice to turn the motor over a few times but not enough to get it started. So I had to give up the trolling motor battery for the engine. That left me without a trolling motor. Not really a good thing when the fish were holding between 15-30' in some of the channels when the wind was blowing at 10-15. I marked fish all day, managed at least one bite but no hook-ups. Man I don't think I've ever seen my fishfinder looking like that on the Lake before. But without a trolling motor and with the wind, as soon as I was on top of them, they were gone. Lesson learned, always make sure dad puts the charger on both batteries Well with my first trip of 2007 a complete skunk, I felt the need to get out and shake the skunk, so I headed to the Rappahannock River. With Ultralite in hand (and new tacklebox on my back) I waded into the river. Got to an island and set everything down. I threw on my trusty fish crack and started tossing a jig into the current. 3 or 4 casts later my little ultralite doubled over, the skunk finally gone, I pulled in a 11" Sucker, creek chub, minnow, or whatever it is you call those ugly fish I hit the current a little bit more with no luck. Deciding the water may be a little cold (actually alot cold) I opted for some deeper slower moving water. That was the ticket. with a 1/8 jighead and a 3" grub I started bouncing it across the bottom of a 5' hole. It took a while but I finally felt what at first appeared to be a snag, well thats what I thought until I started gaining line and the fish made a run. I continued fishing these deeper holes and managed a few 10-11" Smallies. Now thats what I'm talking about. 1 1/2 hours on the river and the skunk was off my back.....Can't wait to get out again....I may just have to do it fri or mon.
