Good job Chomper!
About the floating minnows. Yep, they are great! But do not be steered wrong on the suspending models. One of the best bass baits there is. Husky Jerks, Pointers, too many to list. Anyway these baits really shine in March. Bass get on these baits even before they bite jigs. There are a few secrets. Husky Jerks.... These will vary quite a bit right out of the box. Some will sink. Guard these with your life!!!! You now have a fish catching machine! Lucky Craft makes a wide range of suspending baits. Most all of them work great right out of the box. They should....they range in price from about 14.00 to 25.00 each. Sometimes no action is the best action! Throw out these baits in early spring at staging points for bass before the spawn. Long casts. Crank the bait down and let it sit, they will dive down between 4 and 8 feet or so. Lots of different actions to use, mostly slow. Sweep the rod followed by a stop.....sometimes up to 30 seconds or more.... a couple of twitches....another sweep....pause....twitch, you get the idea. Bites will vary from very subtle to pull the rod out of your hands. Watch for the line jump. Once you have some practice you can walk the dog underwater with these baits. FANTASTIC! You will catch your biggest bass of the season in March and April doing this. During the warm water season they will still knock them dead....just lose the pause...rip them more than pause. Sometimes almost as fast as you can. |

A couple more things I forgot to add.
1) These baits need the hooks to be as sharp as you can get them! Lots of times the fish just can't stand the bait to be in it's face/space and will just slap at them. You will hook fish on the outside of the mouth. 2) Concentration is the key. Most all strikes are during the extended pause. You know you have had a hit by watching for the line jump, when you pull/jerk the bait, OR when the line just pulls tight. |
